FUCK YEAH A TIMER! I FUCKING LOVE THAT SHIT THANK YOU!

Shadow Warrior 2 should still be coming to Linux after all, was a miscommunication
14 October 2016 at 7:28 pm UTC

Well I'm sure they don't mind the PR remembering them - sales of their game no doubt go up when they hit 100's of news sites and people take two seconds and are like "oh, remember X" - "oh yeah what's going on with X?"

Much like how lots of video game information or trailers are "leaked" these days - lol.

HTC Vive VR demo on Linux used Kubuntu at SteamDevDays

Quoting: MyeulCWell, to be fair, we don't even know if it's kubuntu (the tweets aren't from the computer's owner, AFAIK). It could even be that they decided to switch to KDE for their next SteamOS release, who knows?

Kubuntu is one of the few distros that delivers a pure KDE, without any customization, as showed in the images. And as Valve uses Debian as platform for SteamOS and Ubuntu as a target distro, I think is safe to say it is Kubuntu.

Or it could be Neon, Debian, Arch, or a whole host of other distros that have a truly 'pure' KDE desktop. At this point Kubuntu is one of the worst choices for a KDE distro - it is still an entire version behind in Plasma/KDE/QT.

Agreed - KDE on Arch is a dream, KDE on Kubuntu is a nightmare. Pacman vs PPA, the thought makes me shiver.

Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition removed from stores in favour of the new Anniversary World Tour, no Linux support

As someone who owns this game I'm glad I have it and there will be no effect, I can play eduke32 etc just fine.

Post 2000 duke series is trash anyways.

Valve looking to contract experienced Mesa developers to work on the open source AMD driver for OpenVR

I purchased two GTX 970's for Linux builds maybe a year or two ago costing me $800 - it was worth it for me and my girl to game on Linux at pretty decent frames and high GPU settings on most games at that time as nothing else was available.

Now I finally decided it might be a good time to go AMD so I bought a RX 480 for $300 and began a 1 week test to see if it could replace my GTX 970.

I kept it and have since seen it outperform my 970 in some games (CS:GO on Linux).

I solely purchased a AMD GPU for the first time in 10 years for AMDGPU & MESA and I have to say it's pretty stable, performs pretty good, and resolves other weird Linux oddities I never knew NVIDIA Blob was causing.

I am very thankful to Valve for all they have done for Linux. I expect their future actions to mirror their past actions in bringing more games and new technologies to Linux day by day, month by month, year by year.

Once games are on Linux it's gameover, it will be the easiest system to morph into whatever form factor to play the games.

Thank you Valve, Thank you AMD, Thank you MESA developers, you guys have my appreciation and thanks.

Valve expects to sell 1 million Steam Controllers by early 2017, will allow configs for other controllers
13 October 2016 at 6:18 am UTC

Quoting: orochikyoWay too hard to get this controller outside the U.S. Even if you get it, it will cost the double it cost on the Steam store.

I can drive 5 miles and buy them, shit I should fucking package that shit up and mail it to my Linux bretherin. Connections++.

I've owned a Steam Controller and I hate it. My brother loves his though I was heavy into Xbox 360 FPS in the past.

I tried binding the look to the joystick and the move to the touchpad today in CS:GO and it broke my brain doing inverted like that.

I then stretched my right hand over to the thumbstick for look and used the left D-Pad as the Left Joystick -- I'm in pain!

I have a PS4 controller before me but the joysticks seem like the circle circumference isn't large enough to quickly zoom in on specific shooting locations.

I have 3 X360 controllers and the joysticks are amazing but it uses a RF receiver which annoys me.

XBONE Controller bumpers break really easy and are tacky and the 4 face buttons look tacky not being a solid color and the asymetrical nature of X360 and XBONE make it look wrong.

So far the only drill down I'm left with is the XBONE-S Controller with Bluetooth or SteelSeries.

I actually looked up videos moments ago as I was thinking of modding my controller and swapping the ABXY and Thumbstick but I don't think I'll be able to circuitry mod it without some in depth planning :(

Meanwhile the haptic feedback is useless and as akin to a soft vibration to let me know my thumb has reached the edge of the virtual joystick zone on the joystick.

Those trackpads are connected via ribbon though so maybe it would be possible to mount a new joystick on the right one.

The Steam Controller feels like it was meant to exist without the ABXY and thumbstick when you hold it, when you try to use those features it feels like a XBOX controller with a Steam Headcrab on top of it making the controller bigger, it's so difficult to find a comfortable way to hold it.

Steam VR will use Vulkan on Linux, demo shown off on Linux, new Vive controller being made

Quoting: MaCroX95
Quoting: sarmadValve was obviously waiting on Vulkan for pushing the entire SteamOS ecosystem, not just the VR part, which is understandable.

I really hope that this is the case and that things will start growing again for the SteamOS and ultimately we will benefit much from that! :D

It's a avalanche, the deathball has already started to roll downhill and it's just gonna pickup speed and get bigger.

Gaming on a PC is the logical future as the OS is flexible, it's also logical that gaming will gravitate toward a platform where publishers don't have to jump through hoops in a walled garden controlled by control freaks who hold all the keys and can bully any % cut they want out of 3rd party sales.

Valve may control SteamOS, but on Linux -- publishers are truly free of any one entity controlling and ruining everything.

All controllers use common technology, I played Rocket League on Linux on my PS4 controller via bluetooth this week and it was sweet, XBONE, X360, PS3 Controller, Wii Pro Controller and more all work on SteamOS.

Expecting Steam Machines to be a overnight home-run is a fantasy created by Linux Advocates excited about Games on Linux taking off.

High Expectations Precede Disappointment.

Valve's approach to K/Oing PS4, XBONE, Wii is to gradually make their offering more appealing than their competitors - and touting 2500 games + Something like 600-1100 in the works, superior GL with Vulkan, etc... will win out in the long run.

AMDGPU and MESA also achieving a high level of maturity at this time will also make games more stable and steam machine costs drop as the new Polaris APU lowers costs.

It's a matter of time.

Now I'll transition to bitch about the Steam Controller and how I just realized this week that the Joystick and 4 Buttons were an afterthough -- if I hold the thing pretending that those don't exist it's much more comfortable.

Steam Controller looks like a headcrab strapped on top of a Xbox Controller with big O eyes.

I've been on a controller quest trying every controller I can, PS4, PS3, X360, XBONE, Logitech, Steelseries, Afterglow hoping to find 4 controllers for my Steam Machine, It'll probably be X360 or PS4 if they don't announce Steam Controller v2 during Steam Dev Days this week.

I really want there to be a Steam Controller V2, the current iteration seems like it REALLY needs to be tuned IMO, also - I had the dongle in my laptop in a backpack and because it sticks out so far it nearly broke the USB port getting moved around in my backpad, a smaller Steam Dongle would be nice too, and that UBS mount accessory built into every controller.

Also - why haven't I seen controller mods, and 3d Printed Shells for alternative colors available on eBay, and so on? Stickers for Controller Skins is pretty pathetic. Also get rid of that D Pad imprint, it should have been raised up instead of sunk in or left out completely.

Ark is a great example of a game that could use Shader optimizations and improvements.

AMD Zen looks like it will release at CES in January 2017
12 October 2016 at 1:14 am UTC

I would love to switch from Skylake to Zen if the performance is better or I get better features or it improves my workflow via you passthrough / etc.

I built 3 Skylake Linux boxes this year and 2 other Intel boxes last year.

I'm also very interested in the new APU's and how they'll effect Steam Machines, Steam Boy handheld console... Etc
