Oculus Rift VR headset will support Linux after release, looking like it's going to be pricey

You already spent thousands for a monster PC and you have problems with spending couple hundreds more than expected for a rift? really?
Yep, really! It was more than I was willing to gamble. There is very little native content for it and no guarantee it wont be a total flop. Plus, I've never tried any of the HMD's.. I may not even like it. So I'll wait to see how VR shapes up in 2016 and I can try one at a store somewhere before buying.

Oculus Rift VR headset will support Linux after release, looking like it's going to be pricey

I was ready to pre-order a Rift the other day.. I had my bank card out and was pressing f5 like a mad man when the timer ran down and was open for orders. Then I saw the price tag when the page finally loaded and I just couldn't do it.

After seeing all the articles around the net about the price and reading the comments on those articles I was obviously not the only one who suffered "sticker shock" and then backed away. MANY people (myself included) were expecting $400-450(USD) which was what Oculus/Palmer had been leading us to believe for so long.

Honestly it was probably for the best... My PC is probably capable (5930k+3x970) for it but there just isn't really content for it yet. Sure there are some 3rd party tools to get some games to work with it, but unless you want to play a bunch of glorified demos/outright demos there's hardly any native content.

Then there's the fact that there are other HMD's that are going to be entering the market soon and that may shake things up as far as price goes. On that same train of thought I also worry about all of these HMD's having their own SDK's and it turning into a fiasco of what games work on which HMD.

Then as far as Linux goes there's still the MAJOR problem that we STILL lack a real SLI/Multi GPU solution that is going to be necessary to get the best experience and that's not going to change until games start coming with Vulkan. The rift is 2k PER EYE.. that's 4K that needs to be stably rendered @ 90+ FPS to keep from getting nauseated. Even my PC would struggle to do that using 3 970's in winblows without turning down graphical settings.

So.. yea.. I'm kind of glad the price was $150-$200 more than I was ready to spend. Now that getting one RIGHT NOW is out of my head I think I'm just going to sit back and watch what happens with VR in 2016 and maybe revisit the idea later.. I'll just continue gaming @ 5760x1080 ;)

Khronos gives an official update on Vulkan

The "good" thing is that we aren't seeing DX12 games yet.

However, confirmation(and playability if EA(early access) was purchased) of DX12 games that are coming have happened. Have we seen/heard of ANYTHING about in development titles that utilizes Vulkan?

Don't mean that in any negative sense.. just curious. Has any dev confirmed a Vulkan release/version of an in development title? You can get a DX12 playable version of "Ashes of the Singularity" if you have bought into early access right now apparently.

"we need more AAA games no matter what people in our comments think about them, as they help sell it to the people that the general public will be taking at their word"

That's the major issue. If Joe/Jane Blow who doesn't give a rats rear end about the underlying OS(which is most people) were out shopping for a console TODAY at their local electronics store do you think they are going to buy the one that has Fallout4, COD, Battlefront or Assassins Creed bundled with/available for it? Or the one that doesn't? That's a rhetorical question really.. we all know the answer.

As for the performance thing... I see reviewers talking about lower performance #'s than windows which is not a great thing, BUT when you're comparing 100+FPS in windows to 70-80FPS in Linux in reality it's a non issue. In most cases vsync should be turned on and if it gets 60FPS then that's what matters.. you're wasting power(computing and electrical) rendering frames you can't use. Unfortunately I don't think any of the reviews I've read have stated this, which sucks because the performance difference is not that big of a deal in the situations they have mentioned. In fact it's the one thing these "consoles" have over the "traditional" ones right now, seeing as how many of the PS4/XB1 games are sometimes even less than 1080p and only do 30fps.

It's going to be a rocky start for Steam Machines... Assuming we get a full release of the Vulkan spec this year it will be well into next year or maybe even 2017 before we see a Vulkan title(that the majority of the worlds population wants to play).

My First Hours With A Steam Link

Wait.. so am I reading this right? While using the steam link it doesn't run a local version of steam? It actually streams the steam client from your main computer?

If so, I'm extremely glad I didn't get one.

Ars Technica Benchmarks Show Windows 10 Beating SteamOS Performance
13 Nov 2015 at 11:27 pm UTC

I'm not surprised in the least bit. Actually, articles like that are exactly what I expected to see within the week of the official launch. We know probably 98% of Linux games don't run in parity to windows performance wise.

The good thing is that the games it does share with the PS4/XB1 probably still run better than their PS4/XB1 counterparts even if they don't run as well as they do in Windows. By "better" I mean is higher than the 900p/30fps that seems to be plaguing this generation of Sony/MS consoles. However, I don't think that is enough of an incentive to win those console players over.

The bad is that most of the games that sell consoles to console gamers just aren't there and that's a HUGE problem.

The ugly.. "steam machine" makers are already saying they won't use SteamOS.

Might not be the answer you're looking for but all of the Dead Space games run perfectly fine using wine. They all installed and played fine for me using steam in wine.

Quoting: GuestSorry but… you got the game for free and say people shouldn’t complain about the price… And you say we shouldn’t trust the reviews or the posts in the forum… because only your opinion matters? Really…
Because getting a game code to review a game has always stopped Liam from saying a game is crap or the price too high. /s

IF being able to use Galaxy means better means of getting ALL game updates then I will definitely buy more from them, though I probably won't wait longer for a game if it comes to Steam first. The game will have to hit both GOG and Steam at the same time for me to consider purchasing from GOG instead of Steam.

To clarify my stance on the updates, I purchased Wasteland 2 from GOG and GOG not providing patches for the game updates really turned me off. Having to re-download the entire 11+GB game every time an update came was maddening.. especially when the updates were coming in pretty regularly in the beginning and I was actively playing it. I know it affect all games and they do provide patches for both but it's just not something I'm willing to deal with.

Another thing the Galaxy client will need to do for me to take is seriously is multipart downloads. Hopefully it wont be limited to a single download "thread".
