If that's what people want though then I guess they should get it. I have a feeling that we need a solid replacement for X implemented and in widespread use first though if Linux is to have multi-monitor support on par with Windows.
multi monitors for gaming is less about having a bigger screen and more about peripheral vision input. Arguably it doesn't make a ton of sense for a lot of non FPS type games though if it works then why not. For a FPS type game you don't really spend much time if any actually looking at the side monitors, but they are there to fill in peripheral information and are great for immersion. When walking down a hallway it really does feel like walking down a hallway almost.

I'm pretty sure you are correct about needing a solid X replacement before it can become mainstream for Linux as there are too many hurdles right now. I'm sure even in the Windows world the amount of surround/eyefinity gamers is a small percentage. Small percentage or not, once you have tried it an decided you like it.. there is no going back really. I have a list of games that my rig simply can't handle @ 5760x1080 so they are on the back burner until I can. Trying to play an FPS especially on a single monitor pretty much feels like having tunnel vision and is awkward to me now.

What I have read about wayland implies that it should make a lot of the problems associated with multiple monitors a thing of the past and I hope it does.

sub, you're preaching to the choir with me :P I think I have it a bit better off because all 3 of my monitors are identical and I don't run any of them rotated. The combination of ways to set it up probably lends a lot to complications with apps and games I'm sure since different things go about looking for monitor boundaries in different ways.

I actually exploit that in order to game on all 3 with 'Option "nvidiaXineramaInfo" "False"' so more modern DE's and WM's such as XFCE, KDE or Gnome will still receive info about the individual monitor boundaries and then not so modern ones like Openbox (recently figured out cinnamon as well) will see only a single 5760x1080 screen and games (normally) happily span all three. So nowadays I use XFCE for normal computing and then switch to openbox to play games and use cinnamon for the few (usually UE3 engine games) that tend to fail on openbox when ran at such wide resolutions.

Option "nvidiaXineramaInfo" "boolean"

    The NVIDIA X driver normally provides a Xinerama extension that X clients (such as window managers) can use to discover the current layout of display devices within an X screen. Some window mangers get confused by this information, so this option is provided to disable this behavior. Default: true (NVIDIA Xinerama information is provided).

    On X servers with RandR 1.2 support, the X server's RandR implementation may provide its own Xinerama implementation if NVIDIA Xinerama information is not provided. So, on X servers with RandR 1.2, disabling "nvidiaXineramaInfo" causes the NVIDIA X driver to still register its Xinerama implementation but report a single screen-sized region. On X servers without RandR 1.2 support, disabling "nvidiaXineramaInfo" causes the NVIDIA X driver to not register its Xinerama implementation.

    Due to bugs in some older software, NVIDIA Xinerama information is not provided by default on X.Org 7.1 and older when the X server is started with only one display device enabled.

    For backwards compatibility, "NoTwinViewXineramaInfo" is a synonym for disabling "nvidiaXineramaInfo".

Would be interesting (to me at least) to see how many people actually try to game on more than one monitor in Linux, I feel that I am all alone sometimes. I have only ever spoken to one other person who I know does. Maybe next month it can be one of the one time questions. IMO it wouldn't make sense to game on 2 monitors as usually the focal point of a game is the center, and on 2 would be right where the bezels of the monitors are.

It certainly doesn't "just work" 9 times out of 10, but as with many things in Linux, you can usually work around it.

I now know that the biggest hurdle for me at least is the Nvidia drivers and SLI support in Linux. SLI support is technically there but hasn't been touched since they first introduced it in 2008 and it didn't work very well even then. Pretty much any gamer on any platform running 3+ monitors for gaming has/needs multiple cards to support it. So with my second card not really working these newer titles are extremely rough on a single GTX580. I'm hoping for a couple gtx980's for Christmas so hopefully one 980 will help me playing this way in Linux a bit better at least until Nvidia gets off their butts and fixes multi gpu setups for us.

Sort of surprised and yet not surprised at the same time that Unity is the "winner" for DE's. Are people using it because they like it? or they just don't know there are other flavors of *buntu? I've played with it, and I can use it, but it is just far too unintuitive IMO. I pretty much feel the same way about Gnome3 too. So what is it you guys like about them? I may just be old and resistant to much change.. the "normal" desktop type environment works for me.

I think the rest of the stats are pretty much about what I expected them to be. I like these monthly surveys so keep up the good work. Off to do the Nov. survey!

Man, I'm kind of surprised this article has not received more attention in the comments. I played for about 2 hours last night (natively this time) after purchasing it. I didn't really get far into it when I tried it before but I find the game pretty damn addicting now that I am in the groove of it. I'm actually itching to get off work to go home and play.

I'm going to use Portal as a reference since I put this in the same category (sort of). With Portal which I am a big fan of, there is not really much sense of urgency and you can kind of stand back and plan in your head what you are going to do.

With this game I find myself moving much quicker and taking more chances. Like Samsai said, restarting after death is quick, and there is always the reset button. I suppose you could take your time with this game, but I don't feel like you are meant to. It makes you want to see just how fast you can go. It's about quick reflexes and staying on your toes. For me the balance of "GRRRR!!!! DAMNIT!!!" and "FINALLY!! WHOOHOO!!!" is really on point. I only put it down for 15 minutes once to kind of "whoossahhh" and then when I went back and tried it again I made it the first time. Seems no matter how aggravated I get that moment of reaching the next green check point feels really good. It keeps you chasing that high.

I think it's worth $9-10, It runs extremely well and I can't think of any complaints so far.

"Requires" and "can utilize" are 2 TOTALLY different things. I WANT to be able to use Ubersampling and any other overkill feature a game may provide, but that's just me. I'm talking about "Ultra" or "ZOMG! Ultra" settings.. I think you are talking about "High" settings.

I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one, but I do hope I get those 2 or 3 8gb GTX980's I asked Santa for for Christmas ;)

As for 4k? Nope, I don't see the point in 4k yet either, and I've gamed on a tri 780ti SLI rig @ 4k.. it's nice, but not worth the price of entry IMO. For the same price-ish someone can get 3 good 1080p (1440p, etc.) monitors and 2 or 3 good GPUS and do Eyefinity or Surround gaming, and I definitely see the point in my triple monitor setup and I won't be giving it up. When 4k monitors come down to the <$300 per panel I paid for my 27" IPS panels and graphics cards can handle 3 of them, THATS when I'll be interested.
