Yea, I didn't think you were talking about me, our posts basically went up at the same time so you couldn't have read mine really. I was just explaining myself for the hell of it. I was mainly goofing with/at you as I try not to let things I have no control over bother me.. its just not worth the effort most of the time, and I don't understand why others do. Which is why I find grammar nazis funny. Not saying you are one, you were not a total douche in your post like many who get all bent out of shape over "your" and "you're" for example, but those people are out there. It's the internet, it's filled with the under educated, idiots and trolls. that's not going to change and wasting any time of your life with these types of things is a waste of energy IMO. Put that energy towards getting mad the next time a dev basically screws us penguins again (even if only temporarily).. had enough of those this past month.
The other half, like you already stated are not native English speakers/writers, so it's not really their fault. I can't say that I participate in any non English forums, so I applaud them for trying to bring something to the conversation the best they can.
Have a good one man, we've been OT enough ;)
I have a pretty beefy gaming rig that I've spent more money than I care to admit on in order to play games in all of their glorious MAX settings. If I can do that on linux I'm on it. The list of games I have that require windows seems to shrink all the time. It really is a great time if linux is your OS of choice and you're a gamer.

Quoting: YesThatJakePerfect timing. My Windows 8.1 machine is in the shop and the only things I really find myself missing are the games I normally play. I'll have to dig around Steam this weekend.Get to digging! I've been a linux user for many years, I was just one who had a windows install for games. I really only started to look at playing games in linux earlier this year and man am I glad I did. I really think I can count the times i've booted my win 8.1 install this year on 1 hand (might be 2). I have more native games installed in linux than I have native win games installed in win. I've moved as many win games from windows and into wine on linux as it allows. For many there really is no need for windows anymore. The only reason I still have it is that I like to play Battlefield and a few other games that are DX11.

Awesome, I love stats ;) And these ones are good!
I just filled out the new survey, I agree with what WorMzy said about graphics drivers, I ticked the "Updated - proprietary (eg. xorg-edgers)", but really I maintain my Nvidia proprietary drivers myself, ie. I download the .run right from Nvidia's website and manually install so no repos involved.
The one about DE's I ended up selecting "Other" and inputing Openbox, which is not a DE, it's just a window manager. I use XFCE for "computing" and I shut that down and xinit openbox all by itself (plus nitrogen for a background) to play games.
I was surprised at the lack of distro hoppers as well, I really expected it to be higher. Now that I really think about it, the point of distro hoping is to try out new ones. I've tried MANY, but I install them in VM's to play with them. So maybe more are doing the same these days instead of actually installing them. I've really only ever ran Ubuntu(years ago), Xubuntu (for a long time), and now I am on Arch and don't really ever see myself changing again.

Quoting: AsavarTzethI know English is not the easiest language to everyone. But could people please learn how to use paragraphs and also try to follow common good practices when writing comments, such as proof reading and trying to keep it short (as much info in as little text as possible).LOL, good luck with that one. No offense, but are you new to the internets? I know that I am guilty of long posts at times, I prefer to make my thoughts clear and I tend to not leave much "open to interpretation". In a virtual world full or idiots and trolls it really does help. If you don't leave a target for them, they can't really go full retard on you without making themselves look like idiots. I'm not talking about simple disagreement either, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I agree it would be fantastic if everyone did as you say, but it's just not going to happen. So why waste your time posting about it?
This really is not something that is exclusive to English, but generally is a rule in most/all? languages of the world. I especially know this can be hard when some jerk unintelligent jerk starts ranting. So, no offence meant, just pointing it out.
You will only need to look at Liam's comments to find a great example.

WOW a4360825, I know I can be a bit b*tchy/opinionated at times but you take the cake brother. I get what you are saying, as I don't play too many "indie games" myself, but there are many who really enjoy them. There is a lot of crap that gets passed by steams greenlight for sure.. but your #'s are a bit off. I also have my issues with Unity games, but it's getting better. From my understanding it's "cheap" and easy to use and almost does all the cross platform stuff for you, so it's what makes a lot of sense for many smaller devs. I think that UE4 is going to change that when it's really linux ready, so only time will tell.
Native games I have installed right now:
1.) Amnesia: The Dark Descent
2.) Borderlands 2
3.) CS:GO
4.) Deadfall Adventures
4.) Doorways chapter 1&2
5.) DOTA 2
6,7,8.) Half-life 2 + EP1 + EP2
9.) Kerbal Space Program
10.) Left 4 Dead 2
11.) Metro: Last Light
12.) Portal 2
13.) Trine 2
14.) Tropico 5
15.) The Witcher 2
16.) Duke Nukem 3d + high res pack (native eduke32)
17.) Wasteland 2
18.) Doom3BFG (rbdoom)
19.) X-Plane 10
20.) Torchlight
21.) Forced
22,23.) X3:TC & X3:AP
24,25,26.) Penumbra Collection (Overture, Black Plague, Requiem)
27.) Interstellar Marines
Games that show up in my steam list that are not installed:
1.) Arma Tactics
2.) Borderlands: TPS (i know, its not out yet, but it will be!)
3.) CS:Source
4.) Dead Island (again, I know, not out yet, but soon)
5.) Half-Life: Source
6.) Portal
7.) Sanctum 2
8.) Serious Same: BFE
9.) Civilization V
10.) XCOM: Enemy Unknown
So I've listed 37 and I consider all of them to be good games, otherwise why would I have bought them? And I am a gamer who tends to stick to pretty big titles. And ALL of the ones I currently have installed I play on 3 monitors @ 5760x1080 with the exception of DOTA2, because it's purposefully setup in a way to make using multi monitors unbearable because it would unbalance the game, but it does technically work. If I have learned one thing since switching to linux as my main gaming platform it's that there ARE good games out there that have near AAA caliber that just don't have the media/press the big players have. I now own quite a few that I would probably had never given the time of day until I really went looking for linux games.
PLUS, I have about another 170 games from steam and Origin that are not linux native that I have been going through and testing. I have found that a vast majority of them play just fine with wine, and those too I play using all 3 monitors. So of my over 200 owned game I'm fairly confident in saying that at least 85% of those are completely playable in linux either natively or via wine. It's mainly the DX10/11 only games and a few dx9 games that just refuse to work in wine. It really is a good time to be a linux gamer bro, open your eyes a bit.
EDIT* Off topic, but did anyone else notice that there is now a Mac depot for Metro:LL Redux? I was under the impression that wasn't happening

Damn, wish I hadn't missed it but gotta work to pay the bills and buy gaming equipment ;) I would have jumped in if I could have. Though my main character is a level 51 and the other two are above 30 IIRC.. so it probably would not have been balanced too well.
Steam Hardware Survey For September 2014, Linux Rises

Neither myself nor anyone else I know personally (that I know of) has ever bought any console/pc just to play a specific game. Now if a developer only wants to develop for a single platform then that is their decision. It seems more often then not though it's not the developers making the decisions.. it's MS, Sony or Nintendo inking back room deals with publishers, where the publishers tend to be paid hefty chucks of casholla to agree to making a title exclusive. How much of that tends to end up in a developers pocket I have no idea. I'm guessing not enough.
From a purely business standpoint though, I think it could go one of two ways if they were to release HL3 or some other HUGELY popular game on SteamOS/Linux first when steam machines arrive. On one hand it could greatly help the sales of steam machines because lets face it... many people can't even handle reinstalling windows from an OEM supplied recovery partition much less install even the simplest of linux distros to install in order to play it on their own computer.
I think for this to work though they need to forget about giving (by default) people a desktop to play with as well. It needs to be locked to steamOS "big picture mode" (BPM) and have the functionality of say local media, netflix, youtube, facebook etc built into BPM more along the lines of how the current consoles offer those services. Personally, I would like to see them really integrate XBMC/Kodi into steam OS to serve those functions. Many a noob has borked their linux install unintentionally and without real knowledge of how to fix it... hell i've been there done that. That would be horrible press when enough people have it happen to them. If an advanced user wants a full fledged desktop.. they will know how to add it, it's basically debian after all. It needs to be put behind a warning/eula that tampering with steamOS, while not forbidden is "dangerous and not suggested" and it is completely on the user if they screw something up. I obviously don't want a locked down platform like current consoles.. but again.. lets face it. Some people are just dumb and even going by a "step by step" how-to will still manage to even copy/paste wrong and screw something up.
EDIT* basically the average steam machine owner doesn't even need to be aware that their console is running linux, just like most PS3/4 owners don't know theirs is running modified FreeBSD and most Xbox One owners don't know it's running a modified windows OS. *END EDIT*
On the other hand.. the world might not quite be ready for steamOS/linux and exclusive or not.. will just wait for it to come to windows or xbox/ps and the initial sales #'s of the game for those first months would not be very good (which is NOT good) and steam machines tank.
I think tt will be interesting to see how Valve plays this.. their prototypes and the steamOS beta is obviously pretty open, I wonder just how blatantly open the consumer models are/will be.
OH! and just to be on topic.. I have NEVER seen the survey for steam on linux. I tend to jump back and forth between desktop environments multiple times a day, so steam is restarted multiple times a day and I still have not had it pop up. I've seen it many times on windows.

Quoting: pbI've been thinking. Gabe said HL3 will NOT be SteamOS-exclusive. But he never said that it will be released for all platforms on day one. I think releasing HL3 for SteamOS a month or two before Windows and Mac, could really kick-start the Steam Machines.Part of me wants to see something like this happen due to xbox and PS exclusives over the years and the fact that us penguins are still largely treated as second class citizens. But.. the other part of me has always felt exclusives were dumb, it only hurts the games sales. Plus, I can't see it affecting hardware sales THAT much, though I wouldn't mind sifting through data or reading a GOOD article on the subject.

Quoting: SeredLet's hope PhysX dies soon. It's annoying how nvidia promised that it would run on cpus and AMD is always blamed, when nvidia bought the company behind physx and closed it up like it did with everything. :(LOL, I figured someone would hate on it. The hate is justified and I mostly agree, but I am glad that I have nvidia hardware for games that do use it. Especially the borderlands franchise, hate it or not BL does an amazing job of utilizing it and after playing 133 hours with it and then not having advanced physx in the linux port sucks a lot.
Quoting: GuestActually Linux does have PhysX but it isn't on par with Windows yet. Borderlands 2 has it forced to Low as it says here, http://steamcommunity.com/app/49520/discussions/0/616189106749909144/#p2 [External Link] on this thread. Let's hope PhysX gets fully implemented by all parties soon!I know it "has physx", but it's CPU bound right now. So it doesn't use the GPU and is why it's locked to low in this game. That's what I meant. So YES! lets hope GPU physx gets enabled soon, and the ports with it disabled or set to low get updated to utilize it.
