Sales Statistics From Super Win the Game, All Platforms Did Badly
29 Sep 2015 at 2:03 pm UTC
Anyhow it's insane to target a platform (or specific hardware thanks to this practice we get nVidia only games) for development then port afterwards, so many good engines do it for you. Even if you're creating your own engine there are many tools that are already cross platform SDL1/2 or SFML come to mind instantly especially for a low production/performance game which looking at the stills this game certainly is. A better plan instead of shouldering VERY high expectations on the Linux community with a port of this little game would of been just to focus cross platform on their next project and it would look better from a overall income perspective since it's basically free ports.
Support costs on all platforms Liam, if n hours is dedicated to this everyday issues get backed up but there isn't actually a cost overhead unless he himself/they themselves can't fix the problems in house or have to hire an additional programmer for lack of knowledge on said platform.

Quoting: SykeYou hit the nail on the head so hard it's on it's to fiji... pretty sure I saw that quote floating around here somewhere.Quoting: linuxgamerIts not bad if the company has 100+ programmers of which only 2 do Linux porting (no allusion to Techland intended). If your a single person and have spent 10-15% of your time into that this will be no bonus when your game isn't that a big seller.I always do multi-platform. I find that if the project is designed for multi-platform up front, the cost is virtually 0. Maintaining multi-platform code helps find bugs which is actually a huge cost savings!
On the other hand, if you take a completed single-target project and try to port to another platform, you will end up spending a lot.

On Pre-Orders And Other Nasty Buying Habits

Looking at the title I was going to post something about Jim's rant on preorders... You obviously had him in mind while writing this so there wasn't a need.
Linux gaming is an odd beast, "our platform" isn't going anywhere but we may see less releases or ports in the future if we don't show them we're willing to pay. However this has it's own difficulties and still the best yardstick to go by has been the humble bundle pie charts, Linux users will pay. As I have been Linux only for many years I had mostly given up on gaming except a few I would wine once in a while to numb my mind but even now there are many games out and that gives me perhaps a more optimistic outlook into the future.

SteamOS/Linux Version Of Gauntlet Cancelled
25 Jul 2015 at 3:50 pm UTC
I am sad about this one, I really love gauntlet.
Off topic:
To be perfectly fair there are plenty of issues to deal with no matter what platform you're on. Liam, no one was born knowing what a C:\\ drive was and honestly when I have to admin Windows machines I have more headaches than anything I have had in Linux for some time. Sometimes it's preference, other times technical but no OS is perfect and if you really want Linux to work it's best to understand it that it's a monster when it comes to letting you do what you wish but to quote Stan Lee, "With great power comes great responsibility" ... and a greater learning curve. Ohh I got it, it's like the difference between learning DOTA 2 vs mario for the Nintendo. You can do so much more in DOTA but mario was very easy to pick up... not that many people were good at mario either.

Quoting: liamdaweRemember that we were all new once, we all get frustrated with Linux issues, so give people some credit for trying Linux eh?On topic:
I've been outspoken about Linux issues a lot in the past, some things to this day still piss me off about it to no end, but I still prefer it over Windows.

Etymology
From the verb bate, alteration by aphesis of the verb abate, meaning 'to reduce' or 'lessen'.
So I hope it's GTAV but I remember a while ago they flat out said it wasn't. So in that case I have no idea but it'll be an instant buy whatever it is... come on be tomorrow already.
Edit: Popular opinion seems to be KOTR2.... Eh not my favorite but still will buy it.

AMD's New R9 Graphics Cards Will Support Vulkan & OpenGL 4.5

As for the 970 it has 3.5 gb of usable ram but since Linux games (especially wine or eon based) can't do shit above 1080p (and never fill 2gb of vram let alone ~4) it will be an alright card for a while. Nvidia has been slacking on the xorg server support lately and still no wayland support yet but for the foreseeable future those are probably moot points especially if you use a distro like ubuntu.
As far as EON games/wine games especially GW2 970 is your best bet. If you're into more generalized gaming, CSS, DOTA, DX9 titles in wine, A 280X is a monster buy when powered by opensauce. Comically my little 7870 had almost 50fps in BS:I when not cpu choked. However your mileage may vary happy gaming...

Quoting: maodzedunNothing AMD offers at the moment is a viable competitor for Nvidia hardware in Linux. My 290x is virtually useless. You say that, but I think you're using it wrong. My 7870 is 60fps vsync solid on dota2/reborn and ~100+fps for shooters with the open source drivers. I also have DX9 titles in wine that play amazing thanks to mesa having DX9 support. Again you're probably using your card wrong.

If it uses the same Nvidia tools as the first one it will run like utter crap on Linux. AMD or Nvidia cards. Honestly when it was released to such a scandal i wouldn't touch this with Liam's pole.

It's out on Linux now, you may want to update Liam. FWIW there are reportedly mesa glitches, as well as Nvidia proprietary driver glitches at high resolutions. I'm still downloading will give my report as soon as i can.
