The latest Steam Hardware Survey shows a rather insignificant drop for Linux
2 Jul 2016 at 7:02 pm UTC

I just got the survey as I was downloading/installing the atari library from steam on this weak laptop using NEON KDE. I answered it. My Zotac Nen will arrive here on Wednesday so I'll be playing on Steam OS from now on starting next week. I've got the survey many times on both windows and linux.

SteamOS update 2.83 beta released, new Nvidia and AMD drivers hit

So what is the solution?....because I just bought a Zotac Nen and it will be here in a week. I assume you can boot into recovery mode with steam OS as I have done when I tried to install it on this piece of crap old desktop amd x6 phenom 2 before I gave up. What do you guys mean by soft brick? Can you guys be more detailed? Tell us what happened, this is a forum. Should we have direct links to the steam OS forum threads here somewhere so that we do not make double threads on the same subject?

SteamOS update 2.83 beta released, new Nvidia and AMD drivers hit

I just bought a Zotac Nen on amazon. Beware of Amazon.com rewards visa with the $70 promotional credit. I put the necessary difference in amount that is left over after they approved me for the amazon rewards visa on to my account as a gift card balance and bought the Zotac Nen because they tell you that you can use your new card right away. NO YOU CAN'T I used the card for $483 when they gave me a $500 limit. I called them and they told me it got declined because the info did not match up on the card with my account but this is the opposite of what they in detail repeat several times in the instructions that you can use the card right away. So Chase security is who I got routed to and she is telling me to retry it, it will go through now. No it wont go through, once this happens it tells you on your account you have to use a desktop, you can no longer do it through your phone and guess what happens when you get home and take a look. They want the full info on the card assuming you have it in your hands so NO YOU CAN NOT USE IT RIGHT AWAY YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT AND ACTIVATE IT FIRST. Anyways they are supposedly overnighting me the card so I can finish the transaction. Should be using the ZOTAC next week and playing on steam OS.

What are you playing this weekend?

I can't play s*** because this stupid 6 core amd phenom II 1090t desktop can't install an OS and bring up a UI. I've been trying since last Friday. I got linux mint 17.3 installed at first and added nvidia drivers and had it up for a while but the cpus were busy busy busy doing nothing according to top making it useless so after trying several rootkit searches andf upgrading the kernel to no avail I gave up and decided to install NEON KDE (which I like and which works very well on my laptop and even boots with UEFI) with the option to not download any updates during install. What I hate is if I do check that option there will be no UI and I can't see what is going on after the reboot for hours, so now F that. All I want is the OS and I'll do the updating myself. What I don't understand is if Mint had a problem with my Nvidia card why did NEON boot right up with graphics when using the usb stick to boot it?

Steam Hardware Survey For July 2014, Linux Dips

I switched to linux mint 17 this month. I finally got the money to replace my busted desktop graphics card (GTX 460) and found out quickly that whoever installed the cpu cooler at ibuypower stripped the threads on 2 out of the four mounts so the cooler was cracked and bent at an angle only partially touching the CPU. Probably it over a period of time slowly worked its way into that position from heating and cooling down until the 2 loose mounts got more and more loose until it busted shortly after warranty.
Also they stuck some sort of second filter in the inside by the power supply which I found full of lint/dust which most likely contributed to the graphics card and cpu cooler heating up too high and failing.
I replaced the cpu cooler and now I'm a very happy camper. Got a GTX 750 from amazon.
I used to use the Mex distro but I got tired of getting confused with all the different desktops and their updates and which ones may conflict, it was just getting complicated for me so I just switched to linux mint with kde and plan to stay there.

This desktop has been out of commission for 8 months.

Torchlight & Torchlight II Look Set For Linux & Steam

Torchlight 2 with the synergies mod is worth playing. It's bigger, random, more content and densely populated with trash and PVE to fight. You are constantly pulling.
