The Steam Controller: Not Everyone Gets It

Quoting: lavei always wondered why noone ever implemented a trackball into gamepads. every finger besides thumbs are bored to death with current gamepads, even tho they are the most precise tools we got. you could easily get rid of right side accelerator and button (RT & RB) and implement a trackball there for precise aiming

if you dont know what a trackball is:
Trackballs were in the prototype designs. I'm not experienced with trackball mice beyond a basic Logitech trackball mouse. It seems to me they're not as easy to get right. Also, Valve had this LOLworthy goal of making their controller Cheetos-proofed. I don't know the reasons why they would or would not put a trackball in. I just know they tried it.

I've had too much time with following the development in this much detail, obviously.

Quoting: edgleyI would not say touch screen shooters have fine aim. Better than a stick, probably, but not the same as a mouse -- not by a long shot, especially for those who use gaming mice (like myself).

The fact that you have to use your thumb (and only your thumb) with a controller like this is going to limit how precise it will be in comparison to a regular mouse where I can use a number of fingers, my wrist, my arm and my palm to direct aim.

Don't get me wrong, for couch gaming this is likely going to be a fair amount better. But it's unlikely to move past casual gaming (not causal games).
I tried to word my article so that was not to be misconstrued. You're exactly right. I just didn't want to spell out the obvious.

Though, I disagree about smartphone shooters not having fine aim. Maybe not as fine as mouse aim, but it's a lot better than analog stick by a long shot.

I know one game in my Steam library allows me to use a 360 controller as a mouse on its configuration window and it works great. Any mouse emulation for controllers is better than none at all. I personally dislike having to switch between controller and mouse + keyboard. I have my eyes on the Roccat Sova and its not yet released, so even when I use my PC in a console-like setting with the Sova, I should be able to carry on as normal, with the exception of limited to nonexistent DPI settings in PC games.

*So, long story short, the Steam controller was dreamt up to bring PC games to the couch with trackpads, bringing together the best of mouse and keyboard and analog stick controllers as best as possible.

Serious Sam 3 and I have a bunch to even get started with. I'm hoping AMD drivers learn to tell applications they have 2GB VRAM. Until then, I'm sacrificing fishes to our lord, Tux.

Kingston had gained a bad reputation.

I'd recommend a different brand. I'm boycotting them for life.
