Well… after reading comments on here and Phoronix, I think it's safe to say my next GPU will be AMD again. They need the money and I need the savings anyway. How about that freesync and the new open source driver? At this tipping point, I'd kick myself if/when Mantle comes to Linux and for whatever reason Nvidia can't or won't implement it.

Quoting: GuestI've gotten the impression that AMD's OpenGL performance is worse than their DirectX performance while Nvidia's OpenGL performance is on par with their DirectX performance.Quoting: StyromaniacIsn't Nvidia the exception to this entire topic? All I've ever seen is benchmarks showing Nvidia's closed driver is on par with Windows for the same games. Maybe it doesn't help that Michael Larabel won't forego a fully scientific set of benchmarks to include all the games which we actually play. Michael Larabel refuses to benchmark like he's a Mythbusters employee. Both nVidia and AMD share most of their OpenGL stacks across their supported platforms, so you should see comparable OpenGL performance between Windows and GNU/Linux when using their blobs.
More benchmarks of Linux games we actually play using Nvidia GPUs would certainly breathe fresh air into this conversation.
Just to make everyone aware, all I own is an HD5870. My position is based on firsthand experience, scientific evidence concerning Phoronix and anecdotal evidence provided by other Linux gamers.
Of course, there are other things to take into account (e.g I've had vsync problems sometimes - it being forced on even when the game settings should have it disabled, then there's threading differences, and so on) and so the results won't be exactly the same, but should at least be comparable.

I think as long as we do our part to keep it profitable, the SteamOS initiative will remain alive up through a final release of OpenGL Next. I'm not holding my breath for Mantle, but I'm not skeptical of it arriving to Linux either. Until Mantle is adopted by Intel and Nvidia, it's all on the OpenGL Working Group to make a ripe fruit of SteamOS.

If Gearbox had been porting to Linux in-house, you probably wouldn't have heard about having to play a given game exclusively on Linux for a week or having to go through GameAgent to make sure Aspyr Media gets their cut. I'm not implying this doesn't happen elsewhere or you're not aware. I just don't mind explaining.

Quoting: VedzomEven if the promise is fulfilled, the Linux porters won't get the money if people buy the game before the port. You're thinking of Aspyr's agreement with Gearbox and 2K and possibly other developers and publishers. An in-house port should remove all complication of deciding who gets paid how much for each OS they bring support to.

If it's not available in your country and region lock bypasses get your account banned, then the moral police have no say. It would strictly be a matter of law, not morals. Even if you threw hundreds of dollars at the screen, at best you get your account banned.
I don't pirate, but this is plain common sense. Laws =/= morals, nobody will be deprived of his/her money if they pirate a game they are strictly forbidden from buying anyway.
Game developers might agree with this as the exception to immorality, but laws, publishers and lawyers will of course disagree.

Xbox One Controller Now Works On Linux (Without Vibration)

As for those who may be wondering why rumble is not present, it's because Microsoft doesn't provide documentation. They write the drivers for their own OS, so why would they bother with helping out other operating systems? They simply won't. Rumble will have to be reverse engineered by Linux kernel developers to get it working.

Quoting: BeamboomI don't understand this. hasn't xbox controller support been in Linux already a long time? My Logitech f710 has a switch that can turn on Xbox button layout (ergo emulation) and in that mode I've been using that gamepad right out of the box since forever? One Xbox generation of controllers does not equal another. Even Windows was lacking an Xbox One gamepad driver for several months.
Also, if you need to use a wire while using the xbox controller, I'd very much recommend the Logitech simply cause it's wireless. I'll never touch a controller with a wire again after being used to the wireless controllers on the ps3.

Quoting: MohandevirI might be wrong but I think that one of the trackpad goal is to mimick the aiming of the mouse:That was the idea I was writing around. I know my writing had too poor of a structure to hammer the point in, but at the same time I didn't want to treat readers as if they knew nothing about the Steam controller. You're correct with your comment.
In HL2 all you have to do is point in the direction where you want to go with the mouse and go forward with "w".
The trackpad is there to help you turnaround as fast as a mouse. Not as fast but better than an analog stick. This is what I noticed from the videos I've seen. It's much faster than behing limited to the maximum speed of the stick that gets you shot 2 or 3 times while doing a 180° turnaround.
