Animal Gods Coming To Linux, Now On Kickstarter

I feel like half the linux new-game announcements follow the same arc:

Them: "<new game> to include day-1 linux support"
Me: "outstanding! very excited to see this game on..."
Them: "...if our kickstarter/early access sales/etc comes through."
Me: "... sigh. Nevermind."

Linux gaming might be making me cynical. :(

On the plus-side: They actually *communicated* with the community, instead of just leaving us in the dark.

GOL Survey Results: September
3 Oct 2014 at 6:46 pm UTC

Another question that might be worth asking (on future editions): How much did you spend on linux-native games and/or how much did you spend on non-console games in the last month? We're tracking a count of games, but (if I've understood the question) buying Cities in Motion and BL2 + all of the DLC only counts as two games. CiM is only ~$5, whereas BL2 + all DLC is something to the tune of $190. You see where I'm going with this, I think.

Steam Hardware Survey For September 2014, Linux Rises
2 Oct 2014 at 4:20 pm UTC

Quoting: MaokeiI'm still have my doubts about this I never ever get the steam hardware survey anymore if this is what these percentages are based of.
I, too, can't remember the last time I saw the steam survey come up for me. But then, I usually leave Steam running 24x7 and as I recall, it only pops up when you start Steam. *shrug*

Stronghold 3 Gold For Linux Released
2 Oct 2014 at 4:17 pm UTC

Quoting: jsa1983Well, I have some mixed feelings and thoughts regarding this game:
Actually, I think you summed up my opinion rather eloquently. I purchased, but haven't really touched, Witcher 2, but otherwise I think you hit the nail on the head. It's great to be getting more games in linux, but a non-native port/wrapper-based-port just feels like a half-measure.

For now, I think it's probably okay to support devs that do this. Supporting them and getting more games (and more sales) on our platform is, ultimately, in our best interest as linux-gamers. We should not accept a *bad* port or wrapper, but we should be willing to show some flexibility. Meet them half-way, at least until we can prove that this is a profitable place to release games.

And someday, maybe, in the future, they'll get my money. (not a penny until then)

New Steam Store, Lots Of New Stuff
23 Sep 2014 at 5:15 pm UTC

I'm on the fence. There are definitely things I like (being able to filter out certain kinds of games for example), but other things I hate. I loathe the "curators" non-sense. None of those people are people I whose opinions I want.

Tropico 5 For Linux Looks Set To Release This Friday!
17 Sep 2014 at 4:11 pm UTC Likes: 1

I was looking forward to this game for quite a while, so it'll definitely be a Friday-buy. El presidente shall not be denied!

This release brought a question to my mind though: T5 was originally released back in May, and we're getting the Linux version now, in September. How does this compare to other Win/Lin releases? Is there a list somewhere of games that released on Windows with a planned linux release and when that linux release finally dropped? I'm wondering if we have enough data to start getting a sense of what the typical turn-around-time is.

Tropico 5 Linux Release Date Announced, It's Very Close
15 Sep 2014 at 4:22 pm UTC

I've gone from being "skeptical" to downright "cynical" when I hear that a company is planning to bring linux support to a game "some time soon". But this is enough to get me pretty excited. Definitely a must-buy.
