Some thoughts on Valve’s new Steam Play feature and what it means for Linux gaming

I am absolutely loving it so far!
Even though I'm not at home at my main rig, I can now, instead of messing about with wine, just simply click to install and play some of the older games on Steam - this is absolutely brilliant! And the best part is the way that Proton scales the image instead of interacting with X resolution - it even work on titles which use DOSBOX!!! I installed and one-click-ran Little Big Adventure 1 original edition which uses dosbox and it's PERFECT! Before this I used to use a script to change the screen resolution, then start dosbox and then the game and then revert the resolution - now it's just a single-click experience as it should be!
I am so glad that Valve keeps on investing into the Tux and it really is starting to pay off. =)>

This looks extremely interesting!
I've been on and off with German and Russian languages for ages now, this might be just another push that I need to continue developing them skills... will definitely give it a go.

What are you playing this weekend and what do you think about it?

OpenSAGE, an early WIP game engine for Command & Conquer: Generals adds Linux support

I love C&C:Generals - imho it's the best one of the whole C&C series for multiplayer, however it has it's issues - mainly with very oldschool controls and inability to support decent resolutions (have to modify the ini file to get anything decent showing on a modern display). I am mainly very excited about this project due to the resolutions support... who knows, maybe I'll be eventually even able to run it in 21:9 - now that would be a sight for sore eyes.

legluondunetBut we have already OpenRA to play Command and Conquer and it does it very well, why create another project?
Command and Conquer Generals uses a vastly different engine than the early C&C, C&C:Red Alert and Dune titles, hence it is not compatible with OpenRA to say the least - very, very loose and ugly explanation.

slaapliedjeWow, the performance is absolutely terrible. I play Rise of the Tomb Raider with no issues at 2560x1440, but this game just chokes at that resolution, even as far as the menus are slow to react when you mouse over the items.
Wut? There's pretty much definitely something wrong with your OS. Looking at your rig, it should be an absolute breeze to run as it runs perfectly fine on both my desktop and laptop.
desktop: i7-4790k + gtx1070
laptop: i5-8350U + integrated intel UHD620
If there aren't any logs to go by, maybe open a ticket in steam forums regarding the performance? The devs might be able to track it down.

... btw, are you using proprietary nvidia drivers? My testing was ran on 396.24 prop drivers where it performed excellent.

The developer behind DXVK probably has a ton of great job offers in his mailbox already I imagine.

A fresh DXVK release is out with fixes for NVIDIA, RADV and multiple game improvements

evergreencan somebody tell me if dxvk is good enough for buying far cry 5 and playing with it?
I don't have FarCry5 myself to test, but from what I heard from Xpander, it runs really well under DXVK at the moment. I'll link him here so he could provide more info.
