Quoting: Juergi_HodiHi,

is HHD removed?
Yes, they removed it a while back and replaced it with InputPlumber.

Quoting: Phlebiac"brew package" / "brew installer" - this sounds like something diverging from Fedora. Is that akin to something like "homebrew" on macOS?
It's the same project as the Mac version. Well, technically the Linux version was originally forked from the Mac version back in 2012 and was called "Linuxbrew". But it didn't really gain any popularity, until around 2019 when it was merged back into the main project. And then in 2021 the brew experience became a lot more streamlined and faster, with version 3.0.

Brew (which is the actual command used btw) isn't diverging from Fedora, it's just an alternate way to get packages independently of your main OS - basically you can get most apps - without root access - and without needing to write to a core system path. All the files live inside your home folder. This makes it ideal for immutable distros, because you can't write to the root partition.

Before brew, Bazzite used to pitch Nix for the same purpose (of course, in addition to Flatpak, Distrobox etc). I don't know what happened along the way (maybe it was all the drama in the Nix community) but they eventually stopped recommending Nix completely, and started baking in Brew into the image and recommended users to switch to Brew instead.

> Ptyxis has been dropped from our KDE images, and the new Konsole terminal is available with container support.

Hallelujah! This is the one change I'm looking forward to the most. I always disliked Ptyxis and Bazzite's bizzare decision to drop Konsole in favor of it. Ptyxis looked so out-of-place on KDE.

Now do Bazaar next please. We don't need no GTK apps on KDE.

Quoting: ChrisznixHow is everyday life with bazzite? I installed it on one of my kids' laptop (Thinkpad X260) and it my first impressions were quite nice. I wonder if this could be a good daily driver. I really don´t have any experience with immutable systems, though.
I've been using Bazzite as a daily-driver on my ThinkPad for ~3 years and it's been rock solid. Literally zero issues. Been using it for both work and gaming. AMA.

Quoting: DirgeI know a lot of people use the distro as a NAS OS due to their ZFS implementation. I'm interested in seeing what they implement in order to break out and into more broad environments.
Same. I prefer having the same distro on my machines, and so far I'm liking CachyOS. I'd want to see what the server edition offers and see it tested before using it on my repurposed old laptop.
I've been running a Cachyfied-Arch on a homelab mini PC for over two years and it's been amazing. The performance is incomparable to any other traditional server distro that most people normally recommend, plus the added benefit and flexibility of being able to easily install the latest version of pretty much any Linux package, makes me happy to recommend Arch/Cachy for any experienced Linux folks looking to use it as a sever OS.

But for a more serious (production) or install-it-and-forget-it type scenarios though, I'd recommend a lightweight immutable and atomic distro, such as uCore OS - because Arch/Cachy ocassionally breaks or needs manual intervention, and that might not be acceptable for some server scenarios.

Anti-cheat will still be one of the biggest problems for the new Steam Machine

I see both sides of this argument. I get that kernel access anti-cheat is a serious "trust me, bro" situation. I also play both Counter-Strike 2, and Valorant regularly. One of those games is flooded with cheaters, and the other has basically none.
Interesting you say that Valorant doesn't have cheaters, because I've come across many reports that say otherwise.
Eg:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=OoB5_JGSybs&lc=Ugyu8ukIT-P8yIRSrUB4AaABAg&si=Cz_7LkyQAO8pUIPe [External Link]

and at the same time, there's also reports of false positives and people getting banned for no fault of theirs, due to Vanguard: https://youtube.com/watch?v=t8P0KvWzRMQ&lc=UgyEurMFFGhLHjlCDv14AaABAg&si=XAj6ZpUT3x2bhJaq [External Link]

There's also several reports of Vanguard crashing PCs:

https://www.reddit.com/r/riotgames/comments/1cpqr2q/pc_crashing_since_i_installed_vanguard/ [External Link]

https://www.reddit.com/r/riotgames/comments/1hgzg5a/valorant_and_league_of_legends_crashes_my_pc/ [External Link]

To make things worse Vanguard runs all the time in the background even when you're not playing a game that needs it: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/g02ggb/valorant_anticheat_starts_upon_computer_boot_and/ [External Link]

And even causes FPS drops in games that don't even use Vanguard!

https://www.reddit.com/r/VALORANT/comments/g08aub/riots_anticheat_software_vanguard_is_causing/ [External Link]

And finally as someone else mentioned here, you can still cheat anyways by streaming the video to a remote device and using image recognition and input emulation.

So all that these anticheat systems are doing is offering a false sense of security, while severely compromising your system integrity and banning (some) legitimate players.

Anticheat is not just a Linux problem, it's a Windows problem as well - and the best we can do is boycott companies that rely on shitty client-side anticheats like Vanguard.

I think it's fairly likely what will happen in the next 2-3 years is they'll make EAC work on Steam OS
@mattaraxia EAC already works on SteamOS (Proton). For instance, I play Fall Guys online (which uses EAC) and it works just fine. There's a whole bunch of other EAC games which work fine too from what I've heard, such as Brawlhalla, Sea of Thieves, Dead by Daylight etc.

In fact many other anticheat systems also work on Proton, such as BattlEye, nProtect Gameguard, VAC etc. Sure, they may not work at the kernel level and offer the same level of "protection" as on Windows, but the options are there. It's up to the studios/developers to enable support or switch to a compatible anticheat - if they care about Linux.

Linux gamers on Steam finally cross over the 3% mark
3 Nov 2025 at 9:43 am UTC

I'm using Steam and I'm using my (Linux) PC for many other things, and I bet that's the case for most of us. So yes, I think their point is valid.
No it's not, because Bazzite is far more newbie friendly than Arch/CachyOS, and can be used for pretty much everything besides gaming (unless you're into running custom kernels and messing around the system internals, but those would be niche use cases). In fact I've got Bazzite installed on my WFH/productivity laptop not for gaming but exactly because it gets out of the way and it "just works". What I want first and foremost from a productivity machine, is something that I can count on to always work, and that's why I chose an immutable distro like Bazzite.

With the Windows 10 EoL and the flood of newbie users switching to Linux, it's only logical to assume users would prefer to go for a reliable, newbie-friendly distro like Bazzite, instead of Arch and CachyOS which are catered to the more tech-savvy/geeky users. So it's surprising to see Arch and CachyOS report higher figures than Bazzite.

From what I gathered Bazzite is a very specific distro, it's not general purpose. So I'm not surprised it's more niche than general purpose Arch.

Not everyone uses computers only for gaming, I'd imagine majority actually uses them for everything, and gaming is just one use case among many.
@Shmerl: I think you missed the bit where this was a Steam survey - and Steam is primarily used by gamers, so unfortunately your argument isn't relevant here.

I'm surprised CachyOS and even Arch(?!) actually scores higher than Bazzite! You'd think that Bazzite being more user-friendly would score higher... seems like Linux gamers are more tech-savvy than I thought!

GE-Proton 10-23 released with fixes for Killer Instinct, Heroes of Newerth Reborn and more
29 Oct 2025 at 7:09 am UTC

Pretty much as is tradition at this point, a hotfix follows a release since GE-Proton has no quality assurance testing on it
Shots fired!

But you've got a point. Less than 24 hours after posting this, GE-Proton 10-24 is out.. Maybe you should have a policy to report only on feature releases, otherwise you'll have to post a new article every day...
