So the exact same situation as with Doom or Heretic. The bespoke license used here is tricky, but the same was true for Doom and Heretic initally too, before id and Raven smartened up and adopted the GPL instead. Just a vistege of the code coming out so early on.

Well, it is certainly not free media; I could muddy the waters and say any software not created through the open source development model is not "open source" too, but at a certain point that is just arguing semantics.

I'm not intentionally trying to be argumentative, just when I saw the headline "Descent 3 has been made open source" I was like OK a game like wesnoth or 0 A.D. That's not the case unfortunately.

In this case, it really is arguing on semantics. It is open source, but it's not free. So I went with plain open source, rather than "free and open source". Hope that makes sense. I don't really see it as a productive argument to have though :P

So I guess it's "LOSS" ("Libre Open Source Software", but without "Free") :grin:
But I don't think it's a total LOSS.

How are you liking Ubuntu these days? Been thinking of making it my main distro after all these years despite the community saying Mint and Pop are just better. I don't know - Ubuntu feels comfy and I enjoy their default GNOME setup.

Well, IMO Mint is just better. But if you like Gnome maybe not, because Mint doesn't do Gnome, it does Cinnamon or Mate instead. Smooth but fairly old fashioned interfaces. I personally like that because I feel like a lot of the desktop environment innovations that have been introduced over the last 20 years were solutions in search of problems, or novelty for the sake of differentiation, rather than things that actually made it easier for me to use a computer. But if you prefer newer approaches you might not like Mint.

Hmmm . . . looks a lot more like the original than the sequel made back in the day, that hardly anyone ever talks about. I kind of liked that sequel, actually. It came out at a time when the appearance of stuff was often kind of cringe, so where the original was decent cartoony 2d, the sequel had some awkward crappy 3d if I remember right. But it had some good stuff.

Anyway, looking forward to this.

Lot of hate here about the usual complaint. If the average DLC gets you back in the game and results in you playing a game you enjoy for longer than you play a typical full game you buy, then it's reasonable value for money. I don't put a lot of hours into most games. I put a LOT of hours into games like Stellaris or Civ. So I don't squall too much about the DLCs costing money.

In any case, Stellaris is pretty dashed good with the DLCs I have. I'm not certain it would be good with zero DLCs, but it only takes a few. I have no need to buy new ones unless they're particularly compelling, and nobody is forcing me to. So the whole "but you have to pay for ALLLL of them" thing I don't find persuasive. It gets even less persuasive when the same people often bitch that the DLCs are individually not much use, because if so there's obviously no need to buy them and you should just play the base game plus a couple of the best DLCs, in which case obviously the huge-price-tag-for-game-plus-all-DLCs-including-soundtracks-and-shit is irrelevant. The DLCs can either be necessary or useless, they can't be both.

Anyway I don't really see a Stellaris replacement out there, and I want to play something like Stellaris. There are ten thousand FPS out there, gajillions of platformers, hundreds of puzzle games and so on . . . serious big scale grand strategy science fiction 4X? Right now there is one. Well, one that's any good, there might be one or two others but . . . not really. Which means it must be pretty hard to do, so I'm a bit forgiving of engine issues, and also means I got nowhere to go if I decide to get pissy over not much.

I do agree that what Paradox did with Lamplighters League sucked.

I don't think there's an English world "libre". There's a French word, but in the context of open source software it's almost always the Spanish that's being invoked. Don't know why--either there's more Latin American involvement in open source than French involvement, or US Americans sometimes speak Spanish but rarely speak French.

One thing I find interesting about them is that not only are the games he tries bad, and in at least one case represent massive copyright violation, none of them actually seem to be using any of the buzzwordy stuff. The most any of them seem to do is sell a few "NFTs" that are just . . . pictures, that aren't even in-game items, and probably aren't even NFTs in any real sense because it seems like they're selling the same picture to everyone. Probably AI-generated pictures too.
So they're scammy, but not because they're actually even using the scammy technologies to scam anyone--rather, they're just using the buzzwords to try to persuade gullible cryptobros to buy nearly nonexistent games.
I suppose this doesn't really prove that those technologies couldn't be used in games; rather, it suggests that actually taking the trouble to write a game is not nearly a quick enough way to get rich for the tastes of the kind of get-rich-quick scammers who are involved with NFTs etc.
