I have very little interest in the Deck beyond the effect it has on Linux-native gaming in the long run
Likewise (and that's looking good so far) although with everyone raving about how awesome and fun it is I may be starting to get tempted.

Quoting: CyrilWell, this is not really a GOG/Galaxy issue here, the devs just refused to release the Linux version as single player only on GOG, they could do it but didn't want to.
It would have been better than nothing, the devs of Northgard did that.
Plus, don't forget that the macOS version is missing on GOG too, so what is the excuse then?
Guys, don't get it wrong... the devs are not trustworthy.
I don't agree at all. I think it's a fine decision not to release a cut-down version on a store because that store can't support it fully, the developer is well within their rights not to so they don't provide a sub-par experience for users. Saying the developer isn't trustworthy because they don't want to be on a particular store is ridiculous.
That's not exactly what I'm saying. They're not trustworthy because of the lack of the macOS version too, but we, as Linux users, just are focusing on Galaxy problem... It just seems hypocrisy for me.
And what if I don't care about multiplayer? Personally I would be happy to just play the game in single mode...
But in the end, I think we can agree that the devs should have use something else to rely on for the multiplayer, something more "store-neutral".
If it would work with either Steam or Galaxy, then technically it is store-neutral. It's just that one of the stores it's neutral about doesn't support OSes other than Windows.

In the "other bits" category, the SSD seems also not to be on the list.

Quoting: Mountain ManIt should be obvious by now that GoG simply doesn't care if Linux users buy from them or not.
I know but I can always hope.
why would you want to give anyone your money that lacks the care in the world about you. they don't want your money so why fight to give it to them thats insanity
The other thing is why would you want to give your money to a company which can shutdown their servers overnight and you lose all of your rented games? On gog I can buy the games and download them to my hdd and if gog goes bankrupt I still have access to the stuff I paid for and can install and play all the games (even if gog is long gone).
That is mostly true of Steam as well, though. If I try to play a Steam game while I'm offline, Steam bitches a little and then I play the game. I'm pretty sure there's ways around even the bitching a little, or use of the Steam client at all. I understand there are games for which this is not the case, but I've never actually experienced it.

Songs of Conquest looks good on Linux, works quite well on Steam Deck too

Maybe the cut-scene thing isn't a bug. It's a fantasy game, maybe there's going to be some lore about the main character having a strange relationship to gravity, and she's actually walking around upside down.

This Steam Deck Durability Test had me watching in horror
18 May 2022 at 2:31 pm UTC

Huh. When I saw the headline, I assumed he'd have some way to simulate lots and lots of hard use--some way to do thousands upon thousands of hard "steer left" moments in a short time, sort of thing. From the comments, I'm guessing that wasn't what was happening.

That said, this isn't entirely pointless. Take for instance my laptop. I have a laptop with an SSD and a metal shell, precisely because I tend to clumsily drop it or knock it off the wide flat chair arm I often put it on, and I wanted something that would not die when that happened. The metal at one corner in particular is now rather crumpled, but that doesn't seem to have done anything except made charging a little fiddly. So yes, it's useful to me to know how equipment will take being dropped from waist height, for instance. Still . . . I'm not gonna be watching this.

The deb-get tool helps Ubuntu (and derivative distro) fans grab extra apps

Quoting: darkoverlordofdataThis has the benefit of adding (in this case) vscode to apt's automated update cycle.
Only because this particular `.deb` file sets up a repository and a key in your back, allowing Microsoft to replace every file on your distro in your back and have full control to be your own computer sysadmin (Yes that's also a problem PPA have too).

Any program installing this `.deb` file, being `apt` or something else (`dpkg`, `gdebi`, whatever…) will set the repository and the key to give full package and file replacement permission to Microsoft, because those permissions are set up by the package itself, not `apt` or any program installing the `.deb` file.
So do you mean Microsoft in specific or just anyone in general, Microsoft just being an appropriately annoying example? Because I'm not seeing what this would have to do with Microsoft specifically.

Intel gives an unclear update on when to expect Intel Arc GPU availability

Quoting: slaapliedjeThe industry is so weird. We basically went from so many people making CPUs and GPUs to basically 2 for CPUs and 3 for GPUs
Don't look now, but that isn't weird. That kind of "consolidation" has happened in industry after industry over the last few decades. It's currently the biggest driver of inflation--so many areas without meaningful competition, where corporate honchos have realized that with supply chain bottlenecks etc. they have gorgeous excuses to jack prices up way further than those problems actually warrant, and nobody will undercut them 'cause they're practically monopolies.

One thing I notice about this announcement--China is now officially the world's main economic superpower, not the US. New high-tech products are being rolled out first in China now, because that's where they're made and because the market is there. Stick a fork in US hegemony, it's done.
