The share of Linux users on Steam is still holding steady

What benefit do you get from having an open sourced client? Any DRM in the game is up to the dev, not the client, so there is no benefit DRM wise.

Quoting: ShmerlWhy do you care if the client is closed source when the products you are buying are closed source? You end up spending the same amount of money on closed source software.Quoting: TheinsanegamerNThe whole purpose of steam is to sell games, which are almost entirely closed source. How exactly does the nature of games affect the need for client to be closed? I already brought you itch.io example above which counters this idea.

So why would any linux user obsessed with open source complain about steam when such user would never spend a dime on anything in the storefront when nothing is open sourced? If you want steam games, you cant complain about steam being closed source, as every game there is closed source. If you dont want closed source steam games, why complain about steam then? The only people who seriously complain about steam being closed source are hypocrites when it comes to open source.
AMD isnt an option because they still have not pulled their head from their hind quarters and released something that can compete with the 1080ti yet.
As for using linux, I use linux not because it is open sourced, but because I simply do not like windows in general. If linux was closed source, I would still use it. OSX is not an option because you can only use it with apple hardware. if OSX would run on any hardware configuration ala linux, I probably would have bought a copy of snow leopard when it came out just to get away from windows.

AFAIK, there are none).Quoting: ageresWhy are people so open-source obsessed? Games are not open-source anyway, as well as Nvidia driversWe are using Linux after all, not Windows, so you can answer your own question. There is no reason to make such clients closed, except for DRM. DRM can't be open by definition.
Regarding drivers, you can switch to AMD, and use open ones.

It's great we are getting another good linux game.
I dont think I'll be picking this one up though. As great as it is, I have been relatively disappointing in the AI yet again (played it with friend's copy via steam sharing). Too predictable, too easy to goad into attacking you, too prone to random changes in mood. It's the same bi-polar/ADHD attitude that the civ v and BE AI had (no offense to anyone suffering from these.)
It still, to this day, seems like the AI thinks it is in Civ IV, complete with unit stacking.

Destination Ares, control an AI aboard a rusty old colony ship and keep the crew alive, Linux support is planned

Graphics shouldnt make or break a game. OG fallout looks terrible by modern standards, yet I would have totally payed $60 for that game. I bought it on GoG, along with the second one. FTL has civ levels of playtime, and it looks 16 bit.
Meanwhile, the highest level graphics and the highest level games have been sucking hard lately. Graphics /=/ gameplay

Quoting: zimplex1I personally have no interest in this. The graphics look very bad, especially for a $12(US) game.*cough*FTL*cough*

Just a heads up, Saints Row: The Third on Linux has broken co-op play

Finally somebody has said something about this. My friend and I spent a couple days trying everything to get coop to work. It was a huge pain that NOBODY reported on coop being broken. Maybe now this issue will actually be fixed.
Although I will say, I was very dissapointed that the port report back in april didnt touch on coop at all.

Quoting: MarkyLiam, could you elaborate on what's broken with the co-op? I've been playing Saint's Row 3 co-op with a friend who uses windows. Aside from some random crashes and our radio's not being synchronised, it's been pretty flawless for me on Ubuntu.for most people, the game hard crashes as soon as you try to load into a multiplayer game. do not press go. do not collect $200. If you try to host coop, the same thing happens.
Saints Row: The Third Linux port report, better than SR2, but still needs improvement

The co-op is buggy as well. Friend downloaded it, the game crashes upon trying to join or host a coop session. Hopefully this gets fixed. Would love to do a hardcore runthrough again.
AMD Are Already Working On A Vulkan Driver, More Talk About Their New AMDGPU Driver

I'll believe it when I see it. Remember that driver that AMD was going to release for the 285 that would be integrated into the kernel, and came out nearly a year late?
Even when AMD does get a driver released, their high end cards have difficulty against nvidia's mid range gpus in some games, and catalyst is still buggy and slow. Compare this to nvidia's blobs, which are just as high quality as the windows versions.
I really want a 390x, but performance wise, my 770 would win most of the time, which is just sad.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth Linux Patch Now Out

I tried to like this game when it went free for a weekend, and just couldn't. The ui is a mess, and the whole thing feels like a mod for civ v, but with all the fun stripped out. and the beginning is SLOW. way slower and grindier than civ v.
10 hours of gameplay later, and I switched back to civ v. maybe after two expansions and tons of patches (like civ v) ill buy it for $10 in a couple of years.

Linux Drops Below 1% On The Steam Hardware Survey

CONSPIRACY!

Quoting: coryrj19951Valve is probably waiting for the steam machines to release by purposely giving windows users more surveys. Then after the release flip the surveys so Linux users get more, Linux users skyrocket and the steam machine is a "success" automatically. Aha, I figured it out! :PAnd if they happened to release HL3 at the same time, as a timed linux exclusive, that makes linux look like a massive market.

GOG's Installer Encryption Proving to be Difficult for Linux Users

This is quite the unfortunate development from GOG. This is the second company I've dealt with to go against their word to remain DRM free (the first being stardock with sins of a solar empire, as rebellion requires steam to play).
what kind of excuse is it anyway? They are afraid that people will only download part of a game? well, perhaps GOG should have made it a single download if they were so worried. would that make much more sense than encrypting the game files? and wouldn't most of the GOG community being technically literate enough to read the download page, and don't most GOG buyers usually download all of the bonus stuff to go with the game as well? doesn't seem like many people would make that mistake.
heck, i just bought the sims 3 on dvd specifically because i can run it without origin. I purchased the two expansion packs to the original sins of a solar empire (entrenchment and diplomacy) rather than buying the cheaper trinity version because they had none of that stupid activation limit that the steam version had. The ONLY reason i bought from GOG was that it was drm free. If they want to put drm on stuff, ill take my money back to valve, and purchase newer games instead.
EDIT: sorry for the rant. i'm sick and tired of companies screwing users like this.
