Google's game streaming platform Project Stream is built on Linux and Vulkan

Quoting: BrisseThis is scary and exciting at the same time.

+ Platform and hardware no longer matters as long as it can run a web browser.
+ Linux gamers might get access to games they would never had access to otherwise.
+ Servers are going to run Linux. Potentially means more native ports will appear for those of us not streaming.
+ We got Proton and DXVK, which I suspect are parts of a secret Valve streaming project and only released in the Linux Steam client as some sort of icing on the cake.
- The ultimate DRM.
- Big corporations will have way to much power over the consumer.
- The internet will collapse under the huge bandwidth requirements.
- There will always be more latency even though some things can be done to mitigate it.
i would add:
the end of mods

Quoting: liamdaweI said nothing about the Switch, I said classic consoles. I mean the NES/SNES mini consoles, even Sony are doing a classic PlayStation.

Why would anyone buy this? They had enough people excited to gain well over 11K backers on IndieGoGo, don't underestimate hype for such devices.
ok sorry, i saw Nintendo and assume it was switch.
in any case, nes and snes classic sold like 2 millions of units, its a lot but you get 20 games for 60~80 U$D, and those are "legendary" games.
the ammount of people who are nostalgic about atari is much lower than the ones nostalgic about nes or snes.

yes atari vcs will come with "100" games but that is atari vault that you can already buy atari vault in any platform.

"Why would anyone buy this? They had enough people excited to gain well over 11K backers on IndieGoGo"
again, you are missing a thing.
11K is not enough to increasse our marketshare, ouya sold much more than this and still was an flop.

11k is not enough to justify an port to it (much less making an exclusive), unless you were an indie and had an guarantee that everyone you purchased this would purchase your game.

just to make an comparission, GTA sold 100 millions of copies, minecraft over 50 millions most triple A games sell at least 1 million of copies and that because they are on platforms that have an install base of > dozens of million, hundreds of millions or in the windows case 1.5 billions of users.
even linux having 1~2% of marketshare, may have 15 millions of users, and even then we only got an small ammount of triple A ports.

nothing against indies, but we definitelly need more triple A's, and its not selling dozens of thousands of atari vcs units that we will get more.
ok, it will sell more after launch, but not much more costing almost the price of an PS4, launching after or togheter with an ps5.

either we sell millions and quickly increase our marketshare, or we are just wasting money on hardware instead of software (and principally free software, i'm tired of seing projects like make human/manuel bastioni dying)

Quoting: liamdaweWhile the PS5 and so on will continue pushing their AAA graphical realism powerhouse approaches, Nintendo released their classic consoles which sold like mad - seems to me there's still a market for this sort of thing.
Switch is seling because:
1)its fucking PORTABLE
2)it has Nintendo exclusives, Nintendo was not dead in the last 30 years, they were relasing sucessfull games every generation, they were sucessfull to port mario to 3D (unlike many others) and they keep making mario 2D games, they were sucessfull with many other exclusive franchises, either new ones or continuing to make old ones.

why would anyone sane buy this thing instead?
unless they are an blind linux fanboy or atari fanboy?

i like the idea of the hypervisor, but i still think its an scam.

even if its not, sony will announce ps5 soon, microsoft may already be planing the next xbox and switch just launched, i'm afraid there is no rom for this thing, even if it have, it will not bring many new gamers to the table, we will have the ones who already play on ¹linux + the ²atari fans

¹(wich means we will not receive new games because the install base was not increassed and we will waste money on hardware wich have an cost per unit, instead of games)

²(there arent many anyway)

i think the Intellivision new console has an better proposal than this thing, at least its unique.

Classic free and open source platformer 'SuperTux' has a new alpha release out
23 Nov 2018 at 2:35 am UTC

honestly? we dont need this.

the potential for code reuse is almost non existant, we should make an remake of it on godot, that would be a big deal.

at the current state its freedom, but gives the user less creative freedom than mario maker (unless they are hardcore coders, but even in this case , they would have better results using an game engine anyway)

Valve has expanded the Steam Play whitelist to include DARK SOULS III and plenty more
14 Nov 2018 at 2:28 pm UTC

the ones i'm more exicted to play
DARK SOULS™ III
STEINS;GATE
Mega Man Legacy Collection
Final DOOM

'LEGO® Star Wars™ III - The Clone Wars™'
i know that those lego games are good , but i'm not a big fan of the art direction, and starwars i'm more into the games than the movies, may give it an try anyway due to the gameplay.

"PAC-MAN™ Championship Edition DX+" not so excited but i shall give it an try.

FlatOut 2 (is also avaliable on gog, they had an "native" version for years, i think its just an wine wrapper, but at least there is an penguin logo, in any case it will count as an linux sale, and that is what matter)

Feral Interactive are asking you to send the game port suggestions again
13 Nov 2018 at 11:38 am UTC

i don't know.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider, i think they will port ANYWAY, because they ported 2013 and it made enough sucess to port rise of tombraider.
things may change now that we have proton, but i expect it to continue, i would hate to see an incomplete collection of games, the old games we will be able to play due to proton so all we need is keep receiving the new ones.
at the same time i would hate to see yet another totalwar

i would love to see .hack, i'm waiting 10 years to play this thing, but its already an platinum on proton, so its quite confusing

"They talked a little about Afro Samurai and how it renders all geometry twice to get a stylish black outline"
unity did the same thing in the past on its cellshade.
i think its an industry standard (except for arc system work games), as long as it solves the problem with an stable 30 or 60 frame rate i dont see the issue.
the main problem is that it dramatically reduces the ammount of objects that you can have on the screen without toast the cpu and gpu, but if the level design didnt had those objects to begin with, its not an big issue.

(or maybe this affect the poly count instead)

in any case, i think projects like this could be our ticket to sucess, just think about it:
windows can play all the "pc games", and linux could only play an subset of pc games, so, currently, most gamers had no reason to dualboot with linux or replace windows with linux on their machines.
that didnt changed when valve ported steam to linux and many other companies did the same, we always had less games or games less optimized.
no one was wiling to make exclusives for us either.

but, what if linux were the first to break the exclusivity of an platform such as Ps3?
the first to have some games fully funcional on it or an playable framerate ( or having the same frame rate but in an weaker hardware)?
this could be enough to make a lot of gamers consider at least an dualboot, wich could as result finnaly increase our marketshare.

so... if we donate to this project more money than the windows users are donating, we could make linux became their priority! (or at least have the same level of support, but we would have an better performance due to the better kernel)

what do you guys think?
