Part 4 of the Wine work for Wayland is now merged

Quoting: elmapulwhat about games and applications that only work on older versions of wine?
That shouldn't normally happen. If it does, it's a bug that should be reported as a regression.
the issue is , how to test everything that exist for each version of wine?
in theory we can write some unit tests for the apis , in pratice countless things can happen that break the program despite the test saying it should work.

Steam Deck now the global #1 top seller on Steam

Quoting: lukas333Steam Deck 64 + NVME is the way to go imo.
steam deck 64 sound like one Nintendo 64 game xD
now i want an game specifically made for targeting the 64GB model with that name xD
by specifically targeting i mean using trackpads as part of the gameplay while at the same time not using too much storage to take into account that the person might be using the 64GB model and making sure the game run fast enough even from an microSD.

Part 4 of the Wine work for Wayland is now merged

The end result will mean Wine will work on Wayland without needing XWayland. This work should be in the next release with Wine 8.12 due out next weekend with their usual bi-weekly development release
what about games and applications that only work on older versions of wine?
any one is back porting those changes to older wine versions? or we will have to XWayland then all the way?

Valve appear to be banning games with AI art on Steam (updated)
30 Jun 2023 at 8:42 am UTC Likes: 7

i have mixed feelings about AI Art, but yeah i agree with that ban.

in general i dont like not from the asthetic point of view (its almost always an inferior uncanny version of another art) and of course from the ethical point of view (most artists didnt agree with their art being used).

if an AI Could solve those 2 problems, then im all for it, we arent there yet, so its a nono.

one of the exceptions that i give is for things like AI-Upscaling, i dont like when people throw an anime OP in an AI to upscale it, it usually destroy the animation even if its not obvious , but for individual images and a bit of curation it can work fine, or for gaming or other stuff.

i think the plagiarism is the main argument to be against AI in game development

Steam Deck hits over 10,000 verified and playable games
27 Jun 2023 at 1:08 pm UTC Likes: 2

exactly 10.000 verifed+playable (at least here) if we add all the 12.272 native games, the number goes up to 20.063 (since there is an intersection of native and verified+playable we cant simply sum both numbers but steamdb do that intersection calculation for us).

steamDB has an issue making certain calculations, for example filtering by linux+verifed+playable, the number of games marked as cloud gaming is reduced to 2004, but there is nothing stoping you from playing cloud games on linux just because they wont run natively.
if we include those who can be streamed from nvidia: 3446 and take int account that 2004 from those already work without the need of streaming, we get an aditional 1442.

TL:DR
20063 games that you can run directly from your hardware+1442 that you can run via streaming on geforce now: 21505 in total, counting only steam.

not to mention other stores and emulators.
the total number of games on steam is 89.759 , but only 82775 are avaliable for purchasing right now. (im assuming that the windows filter, only list games avaliable for purchasing)

Quoting: elmapulinst that one of the first games to have linux support?
One of the first well-known games to have native Linux support would probably be Doom 1/2. The open source release is in fact based on Linux Doom's code, as DOS Doom featured proprietary DMX sound code that couldn't be open sourced. This means that source ports running on DOS (and then Windows) effectively went full circle and had to reimplement the platform layer :)
i mean, one of those games that had support prior to steamOS being a thing...
and game engines start supporting it, and so on.

anyway you reminded me of mugem...

Removing non-Steam apps now cleans up on Steam Deck and Linux desktop

Quoting: elmapulanyway i hope they do something about game sizes for the lower storage steamdeck, games for switch use low res textures and low poly models to save disk space as well as other resources, i hope valve do an partnership with devs to provide that option, but i doubt they will.
A lot of AAA games (such as Ubisoft's) already use optional HD texture packs, but it's not the only thing that makes AAA game sizes so large. Localization and voiceovers for all languages has a significant impact too.

Some AAA games don't bother splitting HD textures since it's quite a lot of work for relatively little gain (in terms of additional sales). In most modern engines, it's not exactly a 5-minute job to implement a system to load HD textures that works properly with no negative side-effects.
you got another good point: why download all languages if i only gona use 1?
steam need an option to download those "free dlcs" while download/install the game.
