I am still downloading the beta on my desktop. The old version should be kept as an option because it does work on my laptop with intel HD 4400 and Vulkan does not work there (simple benchmarks do work bun not anything like Talos). What I think really nobody needs is the 32bit nonsense.

But if you buy a game on Steam, it's available on all the platforms. So people will get it for free on Linux and play it on Windows...

That can not be a big problem. There are many ways to do it, the most obvious is to have something like many games do have a free demo, that will just be the game for free but only available for linux.

I do not know what are you talking about performance. I do not think performance is the reason I would like steamplay as an option. I would like it _as_an_option_ because some not really demanding "native" games are just broken because the developers have just lost interest supporting it on linux and the games use some stupid "technology" that dropped linux support. For example The inner world was some adventure to make it work, it was doable but still was not a nice experience. On the same time I am quite sure with steamplay it would work fine but you do not have that option now. So it would be nice as an option.

It is not like steamplay is forced upon us, it is that we are able now to force steamplay.

In my experience, publishers with smaller audiences are more likely to seek additional buyers on other systems. If a game has 40,000 players, the publisher says, "Who needs Linux? We've got 40,000 players. Cancelling support will alienate Linux users? Meh, who cares? It's not worth the support headache." On the other hand if a game has 1,500 players, the publisher says, "Where else can we look for buyers? Will Linux and/or Mac support really cost us that much more?"

what you are saying is big companies dont want more money.
that makes no sense to me.

It is not that big companies do not want more money, it is more like big companies are way more conservative to anything that they think is risky. It seems to me that they are like a big ship, even if an island is literally on their way they are likely to prefer to just avoid it.

until steam gives an option, I think there is a simple solution. Just leave the linux in an open beta? This way proton would be the default and maybe not in this case but in others it can be useful to have access on the linux version.

As I have said before, my opinion is that they should give a free version only for linux that you can get for a limited time of a couple of months for example. Whoever gets this can play the game for free but only on linux. If he wants to play on windows/mac or does not get that in the limited time of the offer he has then to buy the game. What do you think of that idea? If I were Valve I would do that to help linux market share, not the exclusivity thing.
