Heroes of Hammerwatch released on Steam for Linux, no GOG release due to missing Galaxy

Quoting: KimyrielleIn that context I find it funny how so many people here continue to bash Steam for its "evil DRM" and hype GOG - when in truth we have to thank Steam for having decent gamings options on Linux these days, while GOG never gave a flying fish about us, and their own parent company is refusing to port its games to Linux.

Just saying.
Being a GOG-only user myself, I don't like this either. If they don't want to port Witcher 3 fine, but at least get Galaxy on Linux working, they got it on Mac so what the hell are they waiting for. Also keep in mind GOG/CDPR don't have the same deep pockets Valve do, but at least they could port Galaxy for this reason alone.

With that said, GOG isn't entirely to blame here, the original Hammerwatch has Direct IP and LAN features before Galaxy was even on Windows, it needs no clients and regardless where you bought the game from you can MP. The devs removed this feature with the release of Serious Sam's Bogus Detour, which was released on June 2017, without a Linux version on GOG for the same reason. They knew for almost a year and yet they didn't do anything to mitigate this issue.

I cannot stress enough saying how bad it is to rely only on services such as Galaxy or Steam for MP. Old games from over 15 years ago had LAN and they can still be played today. It is unfortunate that many devs are forgetting this and moving backward instead of forward.

Those damn spiders are murdering me, have been trying to single line them into a corridor but they are quite smart, I really need to time their attacks.

Quoting: gomeraSo, are you guys buying games from GOG even though they never finished the promising GOG Galaxy for Linux? For me it's a blocker, I prefer still buying games on Steam because of the simplicity when installing games. Am I missing something? cause installing manually dependencies may be a pain in the neck. Is it just because of DRM Free? Just asking, not trying to impose my idea to anyone.
GOG-only customer here, many games come with libraries right out of the box (most probably provided by the devs). As for the missing libs, most games use almost the same ones, so you install libraries for a game today, you install them tomorrow for another game and eventually your system will already have what a game requires. It's a non issue really, I haven't had to go library hunting in some time now.

Personally I wouldn't use Galaxy even if it existed. Downloading the installer and running "unzip -d ~/Output_folder ./game_name.sh" takes me seconds and I have greater control than any client that way.

Glad this is coming to GOG, I haven't played a city build in a long while, will probably go for the middle tier with Deluxe.

I guess this will be one game they won't problems have porting to. Looks great, Blood remains my fav of the Build Engine games.

Hammerwatch remains one of my all time favorites, it runs in a microwave and plays greatly. Getting my friend to Coop it together was a no go though, she hates pixel graphics :D

GOG Linux support on day 1 so I will be picking this at release.

I like what they did with the Linux version, it's so well optimized. The graphics are a nice showcase at what Unity is capable of. I'm playing on hard difficulty and it is indeed hard, Grimrock looks like cakewalk compared to it.

It seems the Godot Engine will already benefit from this as they will turn their focus on Vulkan now that MoltenVk is OSS: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Godot-Vulkan-Focus [External Link]

Not a fan of Early Access however I like the way the dev talks, sounds like an open minded person, he hates DLC and likes DRM-Free. When it fully releases I'm buying this.

Hopefully this will bring an end to the Metal insanity, having a standard API across many platforms as possible would make devs' job much easier, especially graphics which is probably the trickiest part of a game engine.

The big step will be getting companies out of the Windows-Only mentality, Zenimax is a perfect example of this with id Software's games.

Speaking of id Software, how long till we see Doom running in Wine on macOS? ;)

My kind of music:

- GOG
- Turn based RPG with Roguelike
- Looks like Banner Saga (which I always wished it would come to Linux)
- PvP (I hope they have LAN for this)

Looking Good so far.
