Playing Doom 3 on Linux in 2017
5 Nov 2017 at 6:26 pm UTC

Doom 3 brings back so many nice Linux memories. I remember when Ubuntu was just starting out (8.x) and there weren't many native games back then, Doom 3 and UT2004 were my few options. After fiddling with the terminal, I had managed to install the Nvidia drivers and after some more effort there it was, the id software intro movie along with glorified 1024x768 gameplay goodness.

My vote goes to dhewm3, I played it a few months ago and works very well, absolutely no crashes and exactly the way I remember it :-)

Great writeup Hamish.

These devs have my deep respect for their efforts, and once it lands on GOG I'll be shooting lasers a whole weekend. If anyone from Rockfish is reading this, thank you :-)

I finished Wonderboy last week, having only played "Wonderboy in Monster Land" back in the Amiga days, I didn't know what to expect from this. I quite enjoyed it, spent about 5 hours on my first run.

Performance wise is quite amazing, it runs at a solid 60fps on my N2840 (Intel HD) laptop.

Humble Bundle has been acquired by IGN

Humble Bundle for me died ever since they stopped caring about DRM-Free, even worse some devs don't update the said builds. Now I either buy a game on GOG these days or not buy it at all.

RUINER for Linux is now officially on hold (UPDATED)

I learned to not hold my breath when the words 'Unreal Engine 4' and 'Linux' are in the same line. As we have often seen, almost none of the UE4 built games made it to Linux, Everspace is the one truly standing out (thanks to its' stubborn and admirable developers).

Hopefully these guys can pull it off, might not be easy considering UE4 is still not so Linux friendly, can only hope things improve as time goes by.

Setting a primary monitor for launching games in a dual monitor rig

I'm not at home this week so unable to post my xorg config however, I run my 2 displays as 2 separate x screens which means whatever happens on one screen will not affect the other. The only limitations are that you can't drag windows from one another and no 3840x1080 gaming but aside from that no issues at all and I play well over 10 unity games. This is with an Nvidia card, with AMD might be a little different to setup but doable.

I rarely use my 2nd monitor for playing games and when I need it I add the line "export DISPLAY=0:1" to the start script.

2 X screens never failed me regardless of game engine or wine.

RUINER, the Unreal Engine brutal action shooter has been delayed for Linux

I hope these devs keep pushing for a Linux version the same way the Everspace ones did, this would give Epic a reason to better support Linux.

Hopefully when the storm is over they will release it on GOG too and when that happens I will buy it. These guys surely earned my respect.
