Steam Play versus Linux Version, a little performance comparison and more thoughts

It baffles me that non-native is much faster than native.

I really hope someday some smart software engineers will be able to explain why it is that way.

Game developer revokes a user's Steam key after negative review

You have to keep in mind that the developers are human beings too.
The person who did this probably had a bad day, was very fed up already and read this review and took it personally or something, which lead to them over-reacting. It happens to everybody once in a while.

Sure that's wrong, but he did apologize and fix things anyway.

The gorgeous sci-fi action-platformer 'MegaSphere' has a huge update now available

Wait, I remember this game. It was released a few years back and had terrible technical issues.

And now this update seems to completely overhaul the game. Hopefully it's not busted anymore...

Be careful, the DRM-free build on the Humble store dates back to 2015, it has not been updated (yet).

Edit: tried it, it works! Sadly, it's very heavy on resources and overheats my GPU, and performance is not that great. Very impressive game anyway, I think it's going places.

Game porter Ethan Lee gives his thoughts on Valve's Steam Play and Proton

I would really like to spend the time that used to be on FNA and maybe try to work as an official Proton developer, if somebody lets me do that.
You heard that Valve? HIRE THIS MAN NOW!

Some thoughts on Valve’s new Steam Play feature and what it means for Linux gaming

this could be a massive push for more people to actually play their games on Linux, get more people actually install Linux and so on
“if x game worked on Linux, I would be on Linux”
I really doubt this.
Those few adventurous Windows "gamers" who might have been seduced by the idea of using GNU/Linux instead of Windows, will very quickly realize that their games run like crap in Wine / Proton. They will quickly move back to Windows with their tail between their legs and probably never think about using GNU ever again.

There’s a large number of games that only half work or simply don’t work at all. What about when your favourite game gets an update, which breaks it with Proton?
Exactly.
This is also shifting a lot of work onto the Valve's Linux team, which as far as I know is relatively small.

Dead Cells, probably one of the best Linux games this year is now out
7 Aug 2018 at 10:53 pm UTC

This game has been my favourite for some weeks already. Definitely the game of the year for me.
Very polished, very well designed, super addictive.
It's basically Rogue Legacy x 10000.
So good.

Bastion on Steam has been updated to use FNA

What was it using before though?

I thought it was an SDL2 game, but apparently I was wrong?

Interview with Aspyr Media about porting Civilization VI to Linux and other interesting questions

I would have asked how they view the poor performance issues on GNU/Linux compared to Windows... It's still something that makes me dual boot just to play with reasonable frame rate and no hitching. Linux is still terrible in regards to real time performance and it drives me nuts... How do these devs deal with it and do they have an explanation as to why Microsoft's OS is so much faster? :/

Rich Geldreich, a former Valve developer, has an interesting blog post about Valve supporting Linux and OpenGL

The result is the same, Linux is still the second class citizen, the big fluffy cushion down the cliff existing just in case Microsoft goes overboard.

It's really saddening.
