The best Linux distribution for gaming in 2025

Keep in mind I game every day, and run GamingOnLinux from Kubuntu. It's absolutely fine for the average user this type of article is aimed it.
I of course fully expected lots of differing opinions, it's why comments are open! But too many of you think like a tech-head and not like a normie :)

Quoting: sudoerSnaps and flatpaks on the same system? What kind of suggestion is this, to make the ultimate bloat system and to confuse the normal user? Just stick with what the distro offers you by default, in this case snaps. It's transparent to the end user once the system is installed. You add extra apps all the same way via Discover. This "bloat" is not something normies care about, only pedantic people who like to watch a few extra MBs get used up. The reality is: only a few people really care.
Quoting: gabberI dont't get the recommendation. Sure Kubuntu is nice and stable but for gamers it's lagging behind fast. Gamers which more often then not spend good money on their HW.
Quoting: legluondunetTo my point of view Debian, Ubuntu and all Debian-like distributions could not be adviced for gaming. To you both - again, same as above, to normal users it simply doesn't matter. Unless you have brand new day-1 hardware (which is often problematic even on rolling distros) it will all work about the same.
For gaming on Linux in good conditions, you need recent libraries and apps.

Quoting: PyrateStill can't believe there's no proper privacy friendly alternative to Discord. Matrix/Element is the closest I found but even that one is not there yet.Every time I tried Matrix, I found it to be pretty horribly designed. Their mod tools were rubbish, and their multi-room system was ridiculously bad that just strung multiple standalone rooms under a special heading and that was seemingly all it really did. Discord at least generally works well at its job.

Quoting: Liam DaweUpdate: upgraded the chart to show a coloured data point for events, added Steam Deck OLED release label, added vertical lines to specific events.Additional update:
The Steam Tracker page for the top Linux chart also now shows data point labels on hovering anywhere on the chart. It even works on mobile finger taps.

Quoting: HighballSure. I can understand that. My reply would be the same though, it's still the Steam Deck that has massively pushed the number up. So the title focused on that, and everything else is in the article list. TBH it feels like pedantic nit-picking at the title from kokoko3k. So I won't be entertaining comments on it further, I have much better things to do like upgrading the chart... :)Quoting: Liam DaweI think he means, Steam Deck added a huge chunk. But pure desktop is growing as well. There was a point that Steam Deck was almost 50% of the Linux percentage. Steam Deck hasn't stopped selling well. I figure, with the continued growth and success of the Steam Deck, it's percentage declining means that more and more people are installing Linux to their gaming machines. I definitely haven't seen any trends of people switching from SteamOS on their Steam Deck.Quoting: GuestThey are mentioned clearly in the article in the list. Don’t really get what you’re trying to say here. A title only tells so much, and focused on what is actually pushing the number.Quoting: Liam DaweWhile "SteamOS Holo 64bit" is the first OS on the Steam chart, we should not forget that the other 63%+ of the Linux Steam usage polled by comes from other distros.Quoting: GuestThe title led me to expect a rise in SteamOS Holo usage. It is correct. The point of the title is that the Steam Deck is what's still pushing the Linux number up.
However, the data shows a -0.28% decrease.
Is this a mistake or am I interpreting it incorrectly?
Writing this because I think they deserve a mention too ;)

Quoting: EikeIt's listed right on the store page, big green banner above the purchase box.Quoting: fabertaweThis is a fantastic game, I've now put in 220+ hours and having a ball (Linux native).I cannot find a demo?
Please note the demo is quite a way behind the game proper, which gets constant updates as it's still in development. Also note the story line is unfinished (half way?) but personally I play the game for the survival aspect and base building and not the story
