Quoting: ShmerlGOG have released "Project Hospital": https://www.gog.com/news/release_project_hospital [External Link]

I first confused it with the above Two Point Hospital, but it's a different game.
Yeah, will be getting to that tomorrow, need more time with it.

It's likely Ubuntu specific.

Cross-platform development library SDL2 2.0.9 is out

Yeah, the commit log was a little confusing since there's a bunch of stuff tagged as "SDL-ryan-batching-renderer". Although they're not actually in the 2.0.9 release just yet.

Quoting: kaiman"SDL render batching, which Ryan Gordon wrote about in this Patreon post" is not in 2.0.9. As Ryan writes in the very same post:

"This was a lot of work, and I'm thrilled with the end result. This project is sitting in the "SDL-ryan-batching-renderer" branch in revision control; we're about to ship SDL 2.0.9 and it's way too late to drop a change this huge into it, but it will merge thereafter."

Other than that, yay! SDL is likely my second most favourite open source project.
Looking over the revisions linked in the article, sure looks like it made it in. Keep in mind he wrote that post almost a month ago and it only released today.

Edit: No it's not, updated :)

Quoting: FaalagornIt's strange really, as 11 Bit Studios got a lecture in Game Industry Conference about Linux gaming and one person that's been working on their games is really passionate about gaming on Linux (pun intended), being there for 10 years IIRC.
Yeah, I actually had an email chat with that particular person too before the event...

The RPG Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues has gone free to play

Quoting: KimyrielleHow ANY game think they can get away with subscriptions in 2018 is beyond me.
Basically the subscription option exists because the player base demanded it, however it is optional. It grew out of the telethons where you got special rewards for spending at least $5. People complained about missing out on the rewards because they bought too late or early so the time range for a purchase to count gradually got wider (even as the telethons themselves got shorter) until eventually you can just pre-pay for the telethon using this subscription.

Quoting: liamdaweIt wasn't a subscription, it was a single payment.
But there is also now a subscription [External Link].
Fair point, wasn't made aware of that. Nothing in the sub looks interesting either, even if I liked the game that's not good value.

I had high hopes for it. Sad to see it's still so poor.

Quoting: KimyrielleHow ANY game think they can get away with subscriptions in 2018 is beyond me. That business model has consistently failed for any game in the past decade, even for much bigger names than this one. Them stubbornly clinging to it has probably cost more than one MMO its long-term life, for if a game cannot build a sizable audience at start, it usually never will. I get that Garriot basically invented P2P, but this horse is dead, and it won't be back. People want flexibility these days, not getting chained to a game by monthly fixed payments.

Quoting: EhvisUsing their own engine seems to be causing them a few issues. I remember way back when I bought this, it failed to start after an system upgrade. Apparently it didn't like a newer version of libc and getting it to load an older one took some tinkering. I don't think the cause was the same is the one listed above because it got fixed eventually, but it shows they've been doing some odd things in their engine.
I remember the DXVK creator mentioning how Frostpunk, their other game, is an absolute mess on a bug report so it seems they haven't gotten any better.

Update: 11 bit studios replied to my question about the DLC only having a Windows icon along with my suggested fix to get the game actually running properly on Linux. They simply said "At the moment we don't have resources to support Linux. And we can't confirm anything in this matter, sadly.". About the fix to actually get the game running, they said "The engineers got the e-mail and it's on the to-do list. Can't promise though when would it happen exactly.".
