The Atari VCS team aren't doing themselves any favours by accusing The Register of being professional trolls

Quoting: abelthorneAll the marketing is (and will be) focusing on the nostalgia factor.
That's not really surprising that they try to push harder their own licences, but i disagree on this point. They mentionned that modern (linux) titles will run on the VCS. It's even written in the first paragraph of the pitch, mentionned in their recap ("at a glance",1st icon).
They clearly wrote in huge letters that it's "so much more" than nostalgia. Sounds pretty clear, tmo.

How many haters shouting "scam!" mentioned that the VCS already has hundreds (real, not android) games thanks to Linux?
Around Zero. People are just freaking out "Scam! Scam!".

Don't you think it's a little bit... oversized? We are talking about a mini PC running Linux for 200-250$ : less than a Intel NUC (300$) with a poor i3, no ram and no hard drive.

If you check the "controversial" interview on theregister, Arzt didn't answer to the following questions :

-launch date
-preorder
-hardware manufacturer
-Processor
-game partners
-interface

McCarthys conclusion : "it doesn't sound like Atari has the slightest idea what it's doing."

2 months later, Atari answered all these questions (except interface).

If we summarize the story so far :

-9 months ago, atari announced the "Atari box". People just laughed. "Play Asteroid in 4K !"
-6 months ago, Atari said the crowfunding campaign was delayed. People said : "ok, forget about it, it's dead. it was a vaporware". They were wrong...
-The campaign launched in june : all the haters said "it will be a big fail". They were wrong.
-Now people call it a scam, but it is not clear why. Poor communication and advertising?

Quoting: abelthorneof this will likely be a flop
Well obviously, it's a niche market. I could bet that Atari will deliver this mini PC in 2019, but will only sell a couple of thousand VCS.
And then all the haters will finally claim victory "Aha, we were right, the VCS is a big fail".

Quoting: abelthorneA real CPU/GPU? It's an AMD APU with an integrated GPU.
I know that :) But it's easy to check what kind of games can run (for ex here [External Link] ).
It's more powerful than a docked switch. Is the switch a bad console?

I guess all the best indie titles will run flawlessly on the VCS (Hollow Knight, Broforce, Steam world dig 1&2...).

Again, is it such a bad deal for 200-250$?

Who said that? Not me.

Please read my post again. I just said : "Don't feed the troll".
These guys have no more informations (and sometimes less) than the indiegogo page.
Everyone should calm down and quietly wait spring 2019.

Btw, i already have a small Linux box in my living room (more expensive than the VCS), so i'm not interested in the VCS. But i just think this project does not deserve all this hate.

Quoting: DarthJarjarI'm pretty disappointed by the general attitude here.
We've got a linux machine with mass market potential. We all know that the specs are good for the money, that the library is already consequent and that the proposed timetable is very workable. From a purely technical perspective, this is a solid project.
Exactly this. OK, their communication skills are really poor, but it's a shame to see some people call this project a "scam" (just for click bait) or the "new Ouya".

Ouya was based on Android, had no real games, no real softwares, and a poor Cpu/GPU.

The Atari VCS has a real Linux, with thousands games already available, an open ecosystem, and a real CPU/GPU (at least for a 199$ machine). So, no, the comparison with the Ouya is really unfair.

Let's check the real facts : people backing it on indiegogo will get a mini-PC with hundreds (thousands ?) games already available and a cool design for this price. Can we really call this a scam ?

Please stop feeding all the youtube/click bait trolls.

It's really disappointing that we have to explain such evident facts on a Linux website...

The number of strategy games on Linux is really impressive. By far the most represented group...

Too bad i'm not really into this kind of games.

Humble Indie Bundle 19 adds in Action Henk and JYDGE if you pay more than the average

Quoting: NarvarthTry this in the launch options :

LD_LIBRARY_PATH= %command%

ça devrait aller :)
sadly that solution fails for me, which makes me think I don't have some library version the game is wanting.
Try a

ldd ./ActionHenk.x86_64

in a console to see the libraries used by the game.

And if it still doesn't work/give informations, launch the game with strace :

strace -o logAH.txt -e open ./ActionHenk.x86_64

Here (Debian Stretch), the game won't launch without the LD_LIBRARY command, but runs perfectly fine with this workaround.

Heroes of Hammerwatch released on Steam for Linux, no GOG release due to missing Galaxy

Quoting: KimyrielleIn that context I find it funny how so many people here continue to bash Steam for its "evil DRM" and hype GOG -
.
I completely agree. That's really difficult to understand. Their "Linux support" is just a joke. Gog is not even able to support Linux with their client (and i'm not even talking about CD Projekt ...).

Quoting: Kimyriellewhen in truth we have to thank Steam for having decent gamings options on Linux these days, while GOG never gave a flying fish about us, and their own parent company is refusing to port its games to Linux.
Not only gaming options. Valve is now a big contributor to the Linux ecosystem and free/open source projects, but people are still criticizing Valve and praising GOG (which is finally, just a reseller)...

Quoting: scaineWell, I think the "fanboyism" is really about DRM-free
These people just forget that DRM-free games on GOG are also DRM-free on Steam...

Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia confirmed for Linux, from Feral Interactive

Quoting: slaapliedjeIn case you missed these RPGs; Wasteland 2, Shadow Run, Bard's Tale (4 is coming!), Pillars of Eternity, Tyrant, Neverwinter Nights:Enhanced Edition, plus all the other EE games. Of course if you do like old school RPGs, GOG has all the gold box ones wrapped up for Linux too.
They are all old school /sometric RPG (i.e. Baldur's gate style). That's nice, but we have zero first person RPG with a non linear story and/or open world. Maybe Dying light (rpg/action) but that's all. One game.

Some games like Skyrim, Gothic 3, Kingdom Come: Deliverance etc. are really missing on Linux.

It's more of an "undecrease" than an increase :)

There's a big Aspyr Media sale on Steam right now, grab some great Linux games

Quoting: Whitewolfe80Really because i found them boring as fuck on my own, its just a sub par shooter with loot boxes (free and paid loot boxes) what it does have is humour in the case of BL2 the weird aussie humour in the pre sequel is perhaps the one to give a miss.
Tmho, Borderlands 2(/presequel) is probably the best FPS game on Linux : open world FPS with cool graphics, a great and crazy story with strong characters. The games are really varied : a tons of weapons, options, landscapes (ice, desert, space...), cars, weak gravity (pre sequel), great DLC, coop. Hundreds of hours of gameplay for...less than 10€!

F1 2017 system requirements for the Linux port have been revealed, NVIDIA & AMD supported
1 Nov 2017 at 10:06 am UTC

Quoting: scaineYou've got to be joking, right? Installing drivers... from a website? Not having to deal with that, ever, is one of Linux's greatest joys.

More seriously, the last time I tried to install Nvidia's driver from their website, I gave up. It's a weird process involving downloading a tarball, extracting, setting executable, running, specifying a bunch of parameters, and the end result is... a DEB file!
You can try smxi [External Link]. This script will download the driver, install it and deal with the parameters. It is really robust.
