Linux Gaming DRM Free promises: Do they stack up?

Quoting: liamdaweActually the difference here is that gog.com's downloaders once downloaded will still work (you could backup your collection).

If Steam went down you don't have that choice since your game downloads are tied directly to their client?
Not exactly sure what you're saying here? If steam went down you'd still be able to play any games which the devs didn't put drm into.
I don't know about you but I don't have every game I own on Steam downloaded, what would happen if it went down - I wouldn't be able to download my games and play them.

It's a risk we all take and it is a risk.
What I believe he is saying, Liam, is that there are in fact some games which do not require the Steam client to run. I have never tested this, only heard of it, and it's likely only a small minority that benefit from being DRM free.

Linux Gaming DRM Free promises: Do they stack up?

I know Liam isn't very fond of GOG due to their stance on Linux, and I myself haven't spent any money with them for months now either, but still, voting can only help [External Link].

Steams February stats are out, Linux rises again to over 2%

And this is without DOTA2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Left 4 Dead 2 i.e. the Valve games that are not yet out for Linux and have considerably more players a day than any other Valve games. Once those hit, we should see another increase. I cannot wait! Go Linux!

10,000,000 hopefully coming to Linux via Steam

I was thinking 10 000 000 additional users thanks to Steam delivering some decent gaming support on Linux. I was fooled!

Eador: Masters of the Broken World confirmed for Linux

That trailer really reminded me of Heroes of Might and Magic, a franchise I truly adore. Gabe really is pushing developers to support Linux, it seems!

Ubuntu Gaming Laptop from System 76!

Shame I don't actually have a job right now or I would be all over this. :D Still, the laptop seems a bit overpowered considering all the games available for Linux!

Team Fortress 2 now available for anyone using Steam not in the Beta!

I can't wait till Valve officially releases Steam for Linux with a bunch of optimized games. It will be spectacular. Perhaps they will even see server issues like they do during holiday sales! I myself play a lot of Team Fortress 2 on Windows 7 so this is only making the deal sweeter for me.

Well, that sucks. At least you didn't implement a CAPTCHA that requires you to input a very illegible sequence of letters every time you wish to post. I would be outta here otherwise! :p

GOG has done so much good for me, I am not about to drop them over one hiccup. Yes, the reasons do seem odd, but when they put more effort into ensuring that all games work for supported platforms, no matter how old or new, I guess it makes sense to some extent. Still doesn't stop me from having the request to add Linux versions of games to GOG in my forum signature in every forum I am a part of.

Quoting: "Hamish, post: 6668, member: 6"Why must they be on GOG? They are great games by great developers and I would really like to see you support them, but it is your call of course.
Quoting: "Cheeseness, post: 6670, member: 122"You'll need to wait for GOG to support Linux first (so far as I'm aware, that's not happening any time soon).

As another option, if you buy Trine from their official websites, you get DRM free versions (as well as Steam keys). There's a collectors edition of Trine 2 which comes with a digital art book and soundtrack (which I imagine would be the extras that GOG would have).

Also, it was fantastic to see Distance get so close to its second stretch goal ^_^

I enjoy having my collection of games in as few places as possible and as GOG truly represents what gaming on the PC should be like (no DRM, no regional pricing, and so on), I feel very much inclined to support them. I have enough games to play as is so I can definitely wait. GOG has just impressed me that much up till now. They will definitely be coming to Linux, the question is simply when.
