SteamOS updated with some major new drivers and an updated Debian base

I'm interested in SteamOS, but haven't been keeping close tabs on it across the years. I'd love to see a live version available to just get an idea how well it would suit me, even if it weren't any use to actually launch games with. (I'm thinking in particular about the handful of desktop apps I simply won't do without on my living room media box, and wondering in general whether SteamOS shares the shortcomings of BPM: resource guzzling, incomplete lists, deficient chat client, etc. etc.).
[Addendum:] And that broadcasting feature, I'd like that as well, please. And a pony.

Quoting: chtkOne more thing.Wait --- what?! There's a dark theme!? It's like someone just told me I could buy my bread pre-sliced! Ok, I'll find and check that box wherever it may be.
The bookmark icon on a ticked button is pretty much invisible when using the dark theme.

Oh, and Liam, about Antergos, I hope you'll write up a review once you've spent more time with it. With the upcoming changes to Ubuntu over the next couple of years, I'm anticipating I'll want to switch to another distro. I'll be interested in what you have to say.

The only --- let's call them "people" --- who would make such a ludicrous claim about GoL are benighted, banal mouth breathers who are unable or unwilling to understand the nature of media and journalism, especially in the echo chamber that is the internet.
These "people" don't know that for the past few centuries, if there's news to report upon, then multiple people will report upon it. The first person to report upon a story can claim bragging rights that he or she got "the scoop," but that's it. There is no right to exclusivity in a publicly reported news item.
These "people" often misunderstand (inasmuch as they can be said to understand it at all) their Right to "Freedom of Speech" to mean that they have a right to be listened to and receive the undivided attention of anyone within earshot.
I'm glad you wrote this editorial, Liam. You're right not to ignore the squawking and quacking of bigots, false accusers and crackpots. To allow these cretins to gibber inanities amongst the reasonable is to allow another to slaver and drool upon one's dinner plate. Overwhelm them with truth and, if necessary, drive them to the frigid gloom beyond the edges of society where they can feast on the excrement of their fellow dullards.

Sounds great, but the beta prior to this latest release was playing merry hell with my controller configurations, for some reason. I'll stay on stable for another couple beta releases.
Wrongworld, the hilarious looking survival game has been greenlit and is coming to Linux

Yes! This game looks brilliant! The staid and stodgy survival genre has tired itself out striving for ever grimmer and grittier settings. Wrongworld is happily dashing off into a silly, fun new direction. Huzzah, I say. Huzzah!

Quoting: Doc AngeloYou are right. There is no easy way for regular users to get Murmur running. But even then, you have the problem that you would have to tell your friends your new IP every day, except you have a Dynamic DNS account and configured it with your hardware. Yet another thing that is absolutely not common to do or know (how to) for the regular user. It's clear you absolutely get what I"m talking about, and I can't tell you how nice that is. You see not only the gaps in the knowledge of beginning and average users, but the way problems ripple out from those gaps. It all becomes very complicated very fast for the likes of us. If M&M (and perhaps Linux itself) is ever going to reach a wider audience, I feel it will take folks like you, who can see the problems and imagine solutions, that will get it there.
It would be nice to have a single and portable executable file (murmur.appimage), that you just fire up and you're done. For that to work without Dynamic DNS, there would need to be a master server that just tells clients where to find a certain Murmur server - nothing more. The actual communication does not run over this master server. Syncthing is doing it like this.
There are many guides how to set up DDNS, and there are many guides how to set up Murmur. But none of them match what the regular user needs. I think it has to be done in software, just like you suggested. Hm...

I'm glad you mentioned "hosters." Thanks for posting that link. I personally don't team game with anything like the kind of regularity that would push me to pay for a hosting service. Scanning the list, and discounting the invalid links and non-english services, I'm left with guildbit [External Link], which is exactly the sort of site that beginners and average users need: Simple and jargon-free. Is it secure? I couldn't say. But if Mumble and Murmer were rolled into a client that offered guildbit level user-friendliness, I wouldn't be writing any of this. I'd be using it.
Guildbit accolades aside, the home-desktop gaming crowd needs simple instructions to set up a server if they are going to use M&M, I think.

Quoting: Doc AngeloWhat kind of guide is needed? A guide for installing Murmur on a local machine (home server or your gaming desktop), or on a rented server with full access? There are also many hosters who are offering servers for Mumble. https://wiki.mumble.info/wiki/Hosters [External Link]It's less a matter of "what kind?" than "which one first?" And I would imagine that beginning and average Linux users would be most likely to be using a solitary desktop to game on, for starters.

Quoting: 14It is indeed. And if you are able to write clear, specific, step-by-step instructions for setting up a mumble server, then you would be helping not only me but the entire Linux community. There simply isn't enough of this sort of how-to being written by knowledgeable people for beginners and average users.Quoting: PicoboomI don't need people telling me to use open-source software, I need open-source people telling people like me --- normal, non-technically-minded people --- how to use their software. Until then I'll make do with what tools are avalable to me.If your cry for help is serious, I can probably write short instructions for you to run a Murmur server if you know how to install Linux. Murmur is one of the easiest things to host. Maintenance of the server can be set up to be mostly automatic as well. The process of doing so is pretty short.

Linux market-share on Steam dropped 0.08% in December 2016

I wanna say "Pfft, statistically insignificant," but don't know if i can, because I know jack-diddly-poo about statistics. Yet, if I understand the math correctly, (a dubious claim at best) .08% = a fraction of 8/10,000ths, so ... 1/1250th? So, out of 10,000 people, 8 fewer are using Linux than before (or out of 1250 people, 1 less is using Linux)?
I don't know what the survey's margin of error is, but it's hard to imagine 1/1250th would exceed it. It certainly registers as "insignificant" on my personal "Significant-O-meter" (pat. pend.).
So, yeah. Pfft.
