Quoting: LordpkappaAh I see. I just read some of the Windows reviews and how bad the performance is on it too. I think that still raises some questions about the engine though. It's a "last gen" engine that developers are trying to mix with "next gen" graphical features. It seems to repeatedly end badly (like the Arkham Knight fiasco). They should have aimed for Unreal Engine 4, even if it delayed the release date a little.Quoting: tuubiIf it underperform also in Windows it's not the case of a bad port, it's the game that need to be fixed.Quoting: melkemindThe Unreal 3 Engine was never properly ported to Linux, and every game using it under-performs.This doesn't explain why the game "under-performs" on Windows and Mac as well, at least according to various reviewers.

I wish I could say I was surprised by the performance. The Unreal 3 Engine was never properly ported to Linux, and every game using it under-performs. I mentioned this on the forum several months back, and people kind of dismissed it like I was imagining it. If only I took pleasure in saying "I told you so," but I'd prefer to be wrong in this case.
Mad Max looks like it really is coming to SteamOS & Linux after all, another massive game for us

Then at some point, someone in management was probably supposed to commission a port but was never told by finance. The person in finance who got the ball rolling in the first place might not even know what SteamOS or Linux are. They might not know anything about games in general.

Quoting: PeciskI suspect they just don't care much about SteamOS - or they are very careful and not want to poke gamer's nest regarding SteamOS which might come up as sour subject. Either way I agree but I don't think that was deliberate. They just don't know how to handle us yet. It's a big corporation. There is no "they", unless you mean the shareholders, and they only care about lining their pockets. This is probably just a case of one hand not knowing what the other hand is doing. Finance probably crunched the numbers and declared a Linux port feasible and passed it along to PR.

Tomb Raider, the awesome 2013 version looks like it's heading to SteamOS & Linux

Color me skeptical until I see some type of official announcement. Anyway, for those of you who disliked the sparsity of tombs in the 2013 game, it seems Rise of the Tomb Raider tried to get back to that. Since the first game was a reboot of the series, they were trying to tell the story of how Lara Croft became a tomb raider, and they focused a lot of the gameplay on survival (rather than cover shooting as one person mentioned; there really wasn't all that much combat compared to an actual shooter). It is definitely a survival game, somewhat like Far Cry in third person.
Rise of the Tomb Raider begins with a tomb to explore very early on and is supposed to get Lara back to doing what she does best. I would have been very surprised if they ported it to Linux right after its "exclusive" deal with Xbox One concluded, seeing as how it is not even on PS4 yet. It could easily be another year or two before it comes to Linux, if ever.

What exactly does "our vendor via Valve" mean? To me it sounds like a financial issue rather than a technical one.

The only issue I had with these games was some stuttering when loading areas. Disabling cpu multithreaded rendering fixed it for whatever reason, even though I have a quad core system.

Quoting: adolsonIt uses NW.js, which runs in chromium, from what I understand. It seems to be a pretty capable engine judging from the way the game plays. I'm actually surprised they haven't made a Chromebook version yet.Quoting: sigzWhat engine is it using? I thought it was using Chrome.Quoting: adolsonIsn't this a browser game?it's not

I've been playing it for a while. Xinput controllers work fine. The Steam Controller support is broken, but the workaround is to hold a button while the game is starting; then it works. The main problem is that Steam Overlay doesn't work, but since it's still Early Access, it might still get fixed. It's a very fun game, especially with friends.

This game is well made, runs well and is good fun. This is the way Linux ports should be, even if they take longer.
