Indeed. And, as an investor, you take your chances. It took Adapteva a year plus to get my Parallella to me. I'll still do Crowdfunding- but I never have and never will expect it to be a purchase. It's funding the production of a Linux title (or whatever) with the possibility it might not happen...just like any other investor funding a project.

Having said this, it seems that a good toolchain (more than compiler, etc...) to help them MAKE these games possible is something we need to have happen.

Them using Fedora's either good news, or it's slightly disturbing. Fedora may/may not mesh nicely with the .so's on other targets. My system I used pinned it with a version set of things I knew would run on pretty damn much everything for a looooong time. If they're doing similar tricks however they're accomplishing it...it's a win. If they're building on Fedora directly...

It should be noted that not refunding the game's price is an EXPLICIT violation of the Deceptive Trade Practices laws enacted almost uniformly across the US and in many other places.

The ONLY reason they're doing it this way is because the costs of suing them over it exceed the net value you'd spend doing it. Having said this, the AG of most states would be MOST INTERESTED in this misconduct if they don't provide specific performance (the game) or a refund- regardless of the time taken to do either at this point as it's an act of Fraud otherwise on the part of Mojang and Microsoft at this point.

Very true, Dying Light is awesome! The first triple-A title I finished from beginning to end in online co-op on Ubuntu. Never thought I'd live to experience that :)

Is it Valve or the studios with a lack of good skills? It very often takes a bit different level of skill to implement game engine code than the actual game's play code itself. (This is from professional experience, having helped three studios do this...) And this is NOT knocking the studios saying this. As often as not there's some assumptions that you need the skills that come from understanding the guts of both OS's API at least from the behaviors offered from the developer API (OpenGL and DirectX are similar...and radically different at the same time.). It could be you end up having to re-work the engine moderately and it's NOT a simple task in most cases.

It's the first time officially on Linux because they're supporting it on it- and you can legitimately purchase it under Linux. Before, you bought it under Windows and did it all of yourself instead of with an install you can purchase and run.

Hey, funny that. Built it the "right" way, per Valve's recommendations on the subject. That's one of those ways. The other is to use a chrooted build environment or an amped up cross-compile environment done out of several different ways to do it. I recommend (when someone consults w/me...) a Scratchbox2 based environment because it's effectively like a chrooted jail with the ease of use of just a cross-compile chain. (No real risk of host leaking into the build...)

Most of the "fragmentation" arguments come from not understanding OS versioning in the first place. There's ways to accomplish a solid binary against a wide range of glibc's and the like- it's just that a new studio presumes things not in evidence and then blames the OS or "fragmentation" when it was just them jumping in with both feet and not paying attention. Just like you really can't just expect to have something work/built with Lion to fully and properly work with Snow Leopard on OSX. It might work. It might not. Same goes for something built against Win7 running on XP or 2k. It's possible. It's also likely BROKEN. It's no different there than it is with Linux- if you're going to target a range of "versions" you want to pick a baseline, common denominator version and verify against the larger set.

I still am gobsmacked every time I see this complaint- because it's dead clear they didn't do it right out of box. And many of them KNOW BETTER.
