The development of Vulkan, an open source alternative to Direct3D, has slowed down considerably.
IKR? It's actually ahead of Direct3D for most things and most studios are targeting it...because it's on EVERYTHING. Not just Windows.

Want to target the next gen of Playstation and PS4, along with X-Box, etc.? Next gen consoles with minimal problems? You'll use Vulkan. When they get this much wrong...what else are they f-ed in the head on? X-D

Quoting: GuestHad a bit of a chuckle over Vulkan as an "open source alternative...".

For those wondering: Vulkan is an open standard, an API. Implementations aren't necessarily open source.
Softpedia's the CNN of tech news.

(They're calling CNN the most trusted name in Fake News these days...)

What they're talking to is the failed rollout of STEAMBOXES. GameStop had them...couldn't sell 'em. Not so much because they were poor machines- but because they were pricey (Alienware...c'mon!) and the staff would steer people, as they always do, to their pet system, PS4 or X-Box (or as I spell it eeechsbox.).

It's part of why Nintendo's languishing (That and the N is still off doing "off" things...).

It's no surprise that this got "abandoned" in their eyes. Because all they see is the expensive Alienware kit being abandoned...BY DELL.

The Witcher 3 was apparently never planned for Linux

As an observation to those saying "it's done"...

It's funny, you know...

I never expected SquareEnix to get a "clue" and allow even a porting interest the option to make one of their titles for SteamBox/Linux...yet...here...we...are. I've been playing Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

I never expected to see CodeMasters' Overlord or Overlord II on SteamBox/Linux...yet...here...we...are. I've been playing BOTH of them on my laptop and desktop, in their full glory.

It's advised to shut the hell up if you think it's "done"- you'd be wrong about that. Now, had you just left it at "unlikely" with reasons of "money not being there for the conversion" (there IS a market...) or similar...I'd believe you and have left well enough alone and said nothing. But nooo... Someone had to, yet again, make stupid remarks that were based of of feels instead of facts...about things they clearly don't know as much as they'd like you to believe they do.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is officially coming to SteamOS & Linux, port by Feral Interactive
23 Sep 2016 at 12:36 pm UTC

Quoting: TemplateRWell thats great. But I wouldn´t be better to port the predecessor "Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut" first and then the successor? I mean it is better to understand the story, when you play the first part directly instead of watching a reacap intro.
Better for us, but it may be finances that're involved or SquareEnix decided they wanted Mankind Divided out instead and cut a big discount on things for Feral as a result.

Do remember something, folks, for the most part, each and every one of these games NOT made available under Linux by the studio and/or publisher directly ends up costing the porting entity MONEY. The titles I've ported didn't cost me a dime, but those are mostly Indie titles with a couple of "B" titles and one older "AAA" title I've got source access to, not Deus Ex.

AAA titles as often as not require a rather royalty payment up-front (Unless you get a sweetheart deal from the rightsholder, you're looking at as much as 250k to get the privilege to look at the code to port a AAA title...), then there's the expense of doing the porting work, then there's the production to SKU costs, followed by the per-unit royalties that usually goes WITH the game in the first place.

Unless you've got a deal or the money, the title doesn't happen. I strongly suspect that in this case.

Serious Engine 1 Linux source code is coming
16 Mar 2016 at 4:29 pm UTC

Quoting: STiATThat's actually what we'll get. The executable.
The engine's a plus. The executable's a plus. Annoyance would be the assets. Because you're going to have to nab an old disk set or hoodwink Steam into letting you have it on the Linux side, assets-wise to be able to take advantage of this...unless someone were to get a "support gig" that gets an "official" version on Steam and the like.

Well, Ryan's just that awesome as well. Tip of the hat to Croteam for allowing him to go do that so we can have at least an unofficial version that got done but never released. Makes me really want the latest stuff available from them on Linux now.

Oh, I'd daresay that fits each and every one of them... Each new one they introduced was...wow...just...WOW...

I'm not geeking (too much...) over this- but now I'm really looking forward to nabbing the game when they ship...

Quoting: Purple Library GuyThat's impressive. Betcha it was easier to get them because it's MOO and half these people are nerds who probably used to play hours and hours of it.
Probably? The way they're talking, most of them were hardcore fans of the original.

Insurgency Tactical FPS Still Looking To Support Linux, Developers Working On A Solution
13 Aug 2015 at 8:37 pm UTC

Quoting: loggfreakwhat people need to understand is that the source engine is heavily reliant on Havok for physx and related stuff, which is what the developpers mean with 'hidden licencing costs' since Havok's licencing is a bit cringeworthy

Quoting: MajorLunaCSo, when deciding which game engine to use, you can go with Source, which has tons of very expensive HIDDEN licensing fees that you pay even before you start developing, and has less and less support especially for multi-platform, being quite outdated anyway, and even more so being restricted to being used ONLY with Steam. ...

Why is anyone even developing using the Source Engine anymore when you stuck with bastardly crap like this. It's an insane joke. Steam/Valve, much like Micro$oft Window$, is just a money exploiting scheme, squeezing as much money from consumers as possible in every way possible, including influencing development of games used through their systems, and putting as little work as possible into making and supporting the products. Thus, it should be known and referred to as Valve'$ $team.
t's not valve that's getting the licencing fees, source is not outdated, it's been updated multiple times and the engine now is a lot different from the source engine when it was first released, and it's not tied to steam, otherwise titanfall would be on steam, since it runs on the source engine

there's a reason valve is developping their own physx engine for source2 instead of again relying on Havok to do the physics
Heh... So many don't have the moxie to do the physics themselves (not knocking the devs, mind...) that they trend to want to grab their own off the shelf solution (no different with the big-boys either...)- but Havok, while it's "great" to get you there, the multi-target expenses is brutal. And...they don't have to do that to themselves.

http://www.geeks3d.com/20100330/physx-vs-bullet-vs-havok/ [External Link]

The only scary thing there is that Bullet has "limited game support" - which really and truly means that it has few titles using it, even though it's supposed to be a pretty good answer. Many follow what everyone else is doing (Nobody got fired for...). Doesn't have to be that way.
