Linux Prototype Available For Platformer RPG Indivisible From Skullgirls Developer
13 Oct 2015 at 4:43 am UTC

I played the demo. The characters and enemies all look great and have awesome animations, as expected. Some of the backgrounds look shockingly low res and unpolished, but I'm assuming they're placeholder, it is a prototype after all. As for the combat, I have to admit that I liked it less than I expected to. It's an interesting twist on jRPG-style attack meter combat. I mean, it tries to marry jRPG attack meter combat and fighting game combat, which is a great idea, but it just doesn't do it for me, maybe because I'm so hopelessly terrible at fighting games. Maybe it would grow on me after a while? As for the "RPG" part of it, I didn't see anything resembling RPG mechanics in the demo, then again, I didn't fully complete it. I got as far as what I'm assuming was a boss fight and, quite honestly, got bored with it. I'm guessing it will have Zelda-esque RPG-lite elements?

Anyway, I'll keep my eye on this. At the moment I'm interested. Interested enough to spread the word, but not nearly interested enough to pledge.

Allison Road kickstarter has been cancelled. They've found a publisher (Team17) and the game will be funded that way.

Civilization: Beyond Earth - Rising Tide Expansion Released & Thoughts From A Civ Addict

I'm going to wait a bit more to see if another expansion comes out and then for the inevitable Complete Edition. Once I see the Complete Edition for 50% off or more on sale, I'll scoop it up. Until then, I'll continue to stick with Civ V.

Saints Row 2 & 3 Are Being Ported By Virtual Programming

Kind of makes me think VP are doing SR4 and Gat Out of Hell too. It would be weird for someone else to port those games given that they run on the same engine as SR3 and even reuse many of the same assets.

I mean, I'd much rather have native, but a wrapper port is better than nothing, especially for games that don't work via wine, which Saints Row The Third doesn't, to the best of my knowledge (not sure about SR2). In the end, if it works properly and the performance is good, I'll be happy.

This game looks like it's TOTALLY NOT *wink* Space Hulk, not that that's a bad thing.

Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell Looks Like It Will Also Come To Linux

This makes sense, as Saints Row The Third, Saints Row IV, and Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell all use the same engine and reuse many assets, so if you're going to port one of them, might as well port them all, as they're all essentially the same (really fun) game, just reskinned. Saints Row 2 is the weird outlier, but welcome.

As for the first game in the series, it never came out on anything but XBOX 360, so I highly doubt that ever makes its way to Linux. While it would be nice to have the entire series on the penguin, it's not that big of a loss as SR1 is nothing special. While the Saints Row series often gets labeled as a GTA clone by its detractors, the series has forged its own identity over time, to the point where I feel it has its own identity. With that said, SR1 really is just GTA-lite, the series hadn't yet differentiated itself at that point.

Anyway, I hope this is for real, as I haven't played Gat out of Hell yet, as that game came out after I built my newest rig which doesn't have a Windows partition. The earlier games came out while I still had a Windows partition and was still dual-booting and hadn't ditched Windows completely yet.
