I haven't tried this game under Linux in years... What is its current state? Is the performance still terrible?

Also, it wasn't until recently that for the first time in a while that AMD has become competitive with Nvidia in terms of performance, which is great.

Quoting: GuestI really wonder why Linux players keep buying nVIDIA GPUs despite these being the worst option we have on Linux for at least half a dozen years already…AMD hasn't been a viable gaming option in laptops for years as there hasn't been much available in the way of gaming laptops with AMD dGPU's. Fortunately, it sounds like that might be finally starting to change. Sounds like there will be a version of the Lenovo Legion in the coming months that will have an AMD dGPU.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyTurns out that booting into Nvidia only (performance) mode it still happens. Regardless, I approve of your suggestion. :grin:Quoting: hiryuDoesn't seem to happen (so far) when using Nvidia mode. Just when I have Optimus enabledClearly we need a better, improved version of Optimus. We could call it "Optimus Prime".

Doesn't seem to happen (so far) when using Nvidia mode. Just when I have Optimus enabled, which strongly suggests it's strictly a software issue.
So assuming the timing lines up, I may also be having some issues with this driver.
My desktop is fine with this driver so far.

Quoting: Valso470.57.02 may fix some issues and bring DLSS but first it has bugs (my video card stays 15 degrees higher than usual in idle mode than it does with 465.31) and secondly, three digits for the version means it's a beta driver. No beta driver supports Nvidia Encoding also known as H265 NVENC which I use very often with Handbrake. There's an easy way to spot nvidia's fallacy regarding that driver - run handbrake and make it convert a large video file (for instance H264) with H265 NVENC. If the CPU goes to 100% whereas the video card keeps its normal idle temperature, that means the driver in question doesn't support NVENC. NVENC means that conversion is processed by both CPU and GPU, but mostly by the GPU.I've run into some issues myself... I've noticed my laptop will power off completely, no warning. It doesn't happen very often, and (maybe around 4-5 times now) and most of the time it's when I'm playing a game... Now I'm wondering if it's due to this driver update. Unfortunately, I can't be certain when it started. It's recent, but I couldn't say that it lines up with this driver for sure.
To me the unavailability of NVENC is a deal breaker.

I managed to reserve around 10:18 am PST. I can't believe I pulled it off... I was trying over and over through the browser, mobile app, and the desktop app over and over until I pulled it off in one of them.
That being said, I'm surprised Valve didn't deploy a lot more capacity in anticipation of this. I'm sure they ramped up some, but they had to know this was still going to happen.

Hmm, a lot of laptops are now offering the i7 10870h instead of the 10875h. I suspect it's due to chip shortages and that the '70h is a CPU that couldn't quite make it as a 10875h. The '70h has the same number of cores, but 100 MHz lower base and turbo clocks.
Tangentially, while we're on the topic of high performance laptops for Linux, I've done a little followup on the Slimbook Titan:
1. The screen is FreeSync, and if it's the model of Tongfang laptop that I think it is, it's not GSync supported when booted into Nvidia mode. I don't even know if Linux can utilize Optimus (on-demand) mode with an AMD iGPU yet or if FreeSync would even be on the table in that case.
2. It is, for better or for worse, currently limited to the RTX 3070 at this time.
3. For those who don't know, the Slimbook Titan is AMD based.
Glad to see there's starting to become more options for Linux users in this space!

Space opera manager? I had no idea about this aspect... Now I'm really curious. What's that all about?
I've only gone into the menu so far to tweak some settings. Looks like there's a beta online play option? I wonder what functionality it supports... Going to have to look into this!

Quoting: foobrewAlso, probably the game has improved a lot since release. Here's what Steam is currently showing:Quoting: ElectroDDIt's more a space opera manager if you want ^^Now I'm even more intrigued by this game. I've had my eye on it for a while but, like others have said, it has some really bad reviews (at least on Steam). However, some people really seem to love it so it sounds like it might be an issue with misplaced expectations?

Been eyeing this one for a while... But reading this, I decided to pull the trigger. Maybe I'll have some time to play this weekend.
I haven't really played any games like this, but the ideas behind sound appealing to me so I'm going to give it a shot.

Slimbook reveal the Ryzen 7 and RTX 3070 powered Titan

I'm potentially VERY interested in this laptop... I have a Lenovo Legion 7i... And it works great under Linux... Except for the sound. Sound doesn't work through the laptop's speakers (audio over the 3.5mm jack and bluetooth work fine though). While I only bought it back in August, not having sound has me eyeing other laptops.
Looks like, as of right now, the GPU isn't upgradeable, but a 3070 is pretty good (and probably a little faster than my current RTX 2080 Max Q).
I also love that the screen is 1440p! Even desktop hardware can have trouble keeping up at 4k. 1440p seems like a sweet spot for this level of hardware
For the specs listed, the price is surprisingly pretty good too!
Does anyone know if these laptops available to US buyers? I don't see anything in their FAQ.
Probably no one knows the answer to this, but does it have switchable graphics? Does switchable graphics even work with Linux yet with AMD/Nvidia GPU's?

Maybe once System76 starts making their own laptops and there is increased demand by laptop vendors in general (I don't think System76 alone would be able to provide enough of an impetus for such hardware to be produced).
I'm a big fan of the hardware kill switches myself, and I've suggested they do these things in some of my interactions with them.
We'll probably get there eventually on all of these points, but not for at least a little while yet...
I don't get the point of 4k screens on gaming laptops... Laptop hardware isn't that great for pushing 4k. 1440p, on the other hand, makes a lot more sense I think, and is something I would buy.
On another note, it looks like not only is the Nvidia+Windows issue definitely fixed, but the battery/screen brightness issues I was concerned about were never there on model of Oryx Pro according to the same Reddit thread:

Additionally, looks like a fix for the battery/brightness issues on the Darter Pro are going to be as well!

Quoting: jarhead_hAnd again we have an Intel/NVIDIA combo from them. They are doing great things, but I want an AMD/AMD laptop. With hardware kill switches. And open firmwware. So if System76 can partner with Purism on that project I would buy one. In 1080P of course, there's no point to a 4K laptop with a screen that small. This is why:
