I was planning to get a Steam Machine then changed my mind at the last moment and got this instead:

Obviously regular gamers don't need the extra non-gaming power in this machine, but I needed that extra power for work. So, Steam Machine manufacturers aren't the only ones who started believing in Linux gaming. It's nice to finally be able to pick up a powerful gaming laptop designed specifically for Linux. I am really enjoying Tomb Raider on this machine :)

Great news. I guess they skipped last year waiting for Vulkan to be complete and now that we have Vulkan they are back. Valve will probably try to push and promote Vulkan during this year's Dev Days.

There aren't much local multiplayer games, so this might still be well needed.

Quoting: maodzedunUntil the terrible performance difference is fixed, they can port the entire Steam library to Linux and it still won't matter. Drivers with equal performance to Windows. Not close, not acceptable, not almost - equal. And getting rid of OpenGL like yesterday. Until there is performance parity between Windows and Linux, nothing else matter. Still, that's a lot of progress compared to 4-5 years ago, I'll give you that.nVidia drivers are already at equal performance to Windows, and has even surpassed it in some benchmarks. The bad performance you see is from games not optimized for OpenGL. And we already have a replacement for OpenGL with drivers also surpassing Windows in performance. So, the platform itself is ready, we just need game developers to target it.

What concerns me isn't the fact that the sales are bad, what concerns me is that Valve is very quite about it. There is not even a word from them on whether they are still committed to SteamOS.

I am using Unity Editor on Linux at work. It works, but with issues compared to the MacOS version (haven't tried the Windows version). The biggest annoyance is that it idles at 100% cpu usage! They know about this issue already but haven't fixed it yet. I am now downloading the new version to see if it resolves that issue.

Few years ago I was an exclusively console gamer. Now after Steam released for Linux I switched to Linux gaming. At first I was taking any sale opportunity to grab the games I like to play later, then I realized if I continue doing this I'll end up with many games that I'll never have the time to play, so I stopped buying games until I finish the ones at hand. I think this is a good indication that Linux is already a viable gaming platform that has more games than casual gamers like myself have the time for.

I guess this will be worth it when the AMD drivers are more mature and Vulkan becomes widely adopted.
