Ubisoft announce Steam Deck support for Assassin's Creed Shadows at launch

Nice. I didn't expect the Steam Deck to be able to handle that graphics. Impressive.

I hope Valve are watching closely with Microsoft working towards an Xbox Handheld

A Windows handheld is not something to worry about much, given the amount of trouble Windows has on gaming handhelds. There is only so much you can improve without doing a major re-write of parts of the OS, which is not gonna happen.

An XBox handheld on the other hand is worrying indeed, as it won't have any of the Windows problems, and also won't have the anti-cheat problem. However, the openness of Steam Deck will continue to be a major selling point against an XBox handheld, which is going to be as closed as a device can possibly be.

The best Linux distribution for gaming in 2025

Snaps are well implemented and polished, and they also have features not available in other packaging systems, like packing system components and command line apps. The only problem I have with Snap is that it's locked to a single backend, which is against the principles of openness that you would expect from a Linux OS. As a user I should be able to add another store/repo just like Flatpak and deb allow me to do, but that's not possible with Snap.

Steam sees a big rise in Simplified Chinese for February 2025 bringing Linux down below 2%

So, more Ubuntu users are using the Snap version of Steam now than those using the native version. Interesting.
Also interesting to see Ubuntu overall continues to slide down.

Phil Spencer of Microsoft Gaming thinks generative AI will help game preservation

Has this guy ever heard of emulators?
Also, the developer of the game must have the source code, so they can simply port it to different platforms. That's not a big task these days.

Counter-Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source get major updates with 64bit support

I thought Counter Strike: Source was dead already. Why are people still playing that when CS2 exists? And why are the servers still up anyway?

ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN launches in May - will have Kernel Level Anti-Cheat
13 Feb 2025 at 6:49 pm UTC

If it's an online focused game then forget about it working on Steam Deck, first because far less people play online games on the go, and second because kernel level anti-cheat normally means Windows only.

Blocking Linux / Steam Deck in Apex Legends led to a 'meaningful reduction' in cheaters
5 Feb 2025 at 9:04 pm UTC Likes: 6

It's ironic that the Apex Legend team are themselves CHEATING with that graph. The graph was already dropping for whatever unspecified reason, and if you see the point at which Linux was removed you'll see a slight change in the direction of that downwards graph. The correct method of measuring the difference is to project where the graph would be with Linux and then compare it against where the graph is without Linux and measure the difference, but instead of doing that they just measured the total drop which includes other factors not just the removal of Linux.
And then the graph started rising again even though Linux is removed, but instead of comparing against where things are today, they just chose the bottom point in the graph to compare against.
And on top of that they just zoomed the graph in to give you an impression of a bigger drop than it really is. When you look at the zoomed graph you'll get the impression that the drop is over 50%, when it's 33% according to their faulty numbers, and in reality the numbers are far less than 33%.
And then the question is: what about the remaining 66% who are cheating on Windows? I see this as just the team trying to justify their decision that numbers are proving was a wrong decision.

The ridiculous Steam Brick just makes me want a proper Steam Machine
27 Jan 2025 at 9:18 pm UTC Likes: 5

I think the main blocker for Steam Machines right now is the anti-cheat situation in Linux. The anti-cheat doesn't matter much in Steam Deck because on the go people tend to play more single player games because you need to be able to pause at any moment since you are on the go. Multiplayer games simply aren't fit on the go. A Steam Machine sitting in the living room is a different story and there is a far more chance that people would want to play multiplayer games on Steam Machines.

Mecha Comet looks like a fun little modular Linux handheld

Having ethernet and USB ports makes the device useful for people working in the auto industry as well as those working in networking. Smart idea.
