Looks like Republique is no longer getting a Linux port

We are working on a linux port, but have a dependency that isn't compatible with the target system.
To me as a software developer, this translates to "We have no idea what we're doing!"
Why not announce the game for Super Nintendo and later say "the system wasn't compatible".
The knowledge was there from day 1. It makes me sad, when people do not think.

Very glad to see them clean up this mess.
We Java developers always bundle a specific version of the Java Virtual Machine with our games,
so that the experience is the tested by us across different VMs.
What if the user changes his Java version or switches to Oracle Java? We haven't tested our games on his specific version so it could be incompatible.
This is true for any game that depends on third party libraries/frameworks. Just bundle them if legally possible!
Sadly, many devs just don't know what they are doing.
Also the Java Installation on windows is hell, so it's bad manners to not bundle a slim "updater-less" version.

THEY ARE DOING IT WRONG!
You first establish a cross-platform base and then develop.
Nobody in their right mind would first develop and then port if they are doing it themselves!
Porting after the game is finished costs MUCH MUCH more (that's why it's viable to be a porting company like Feral etc.)
If you design your project in a cross-platform manner, you avoid hundreds of problems.
This is not even sad. It's scam. They announced linux support but they are too incompetent to deliver.

Aww we are already working on the ConstraintsJam for this month. Another GameJam would probably break our work schedule...
Working on a browser game for facebook with asynchronous coop multiplayer.
It's quite an experiment :D
That being said, I doubt we will have the time for another gamejam in october... :(

Glad to see a humble bundle with proper linux support again.
But I can't find words to express how much I hate these "cinematic trailers".
I want to see the GAME ffs, nothing else.
I clicked on "play" to see the game QUBE but only saw an annoying place holder for a gameplay trailer -.-
When will people stop this non-sense?! The silly thing is that it even costs money to preduce these things.

Anyone Interested In A GOL Game Jam?

I develop a big project in a team solely on Ubuntu and have participated in some gamejams.
Unity for linux is not stable yet. It's still Alpha and it IS very buggy.
I'm using it for the currently running "Mini Ludum Dare".
I have participated in Ludum Dare (Weekend Gamejam) and Mini Ludum Dare (1 week Gamejam).
I would suggest:
* Make it a week long. Clearing an entire weekend is super-difficult, even for Ludum Dare where we know the date 3 months ahead! This way anyone can find some time within the week to create the games.
* We need a theme. Themes make it creative. You can make the theme optional. "Make any game" makes it really hard to decide on what to make!
* Make games FOR linux. I personally only dev on linux, but Unity for example is not stable yet! You definitely should wait for the stable Unity editor for a "dev on linux" jam.
* test and rate games on Ubuntu only (no Windows), as that's steams supported distri as well. Devs can use this opportunity to actually setup a linux test box. It's ridiculous how many devs don't even test their linux builds before releasing on steam.
* Which prize? It's simple! Make an article about the top X games at the end and offer the winner an inverview! Indies are dying for publicity and in a Ludum Dare, most games just go under because there are way too many. I know I would die for an article about my team and our main project on GOL.
* Don't limit tooling.. That excludes people who do not regularly do gamejams, because they do not have ready code fragments.
In fact, I will PM you later when I have time. Setting this up with a small community should be quite easy. (20+ participants)

Our team uses Java to develop a cross-platform game.
All run Ubuntu 14.04 and we will never look to any other OS for our development.
Setting up the programming environment is done so fast, using symlinks is a dream come true,
using Version Control (git) via command line is native (in windows it's ugly and buggy), and it's just stable.
On the art side, sure. There is too much "Windows Only" software.
However I would always use Blender and Inkscape over their costly alternatives.
As for Gimp, well it's Gimp. I don't have Photoshop experience but it has to be easier to use.
