what happened? a year with no GOL news?

sure... its atari, cant be trusted
Glad you raised the question, I was wondering what's happening with the VCS. Is it still selling? Are there new updates and game releases going out for it?
Yup, new games are steadily being released (see above post about 7800 drops). The Recharged series are being released cross platform, but the VCS versions have some extra stuff to them.

Nice. Any idea how it's selling? Does it seem like it's going to be a successful business? I wish their games store is available in a web form so we can access it from any browser.
Kind of hard to tell how well it's selling. I guess I could ask on their Discord.

I agree, it actually is something that irritates me, their store on the machine is rather... crap. They don't have a 'cart' yet, so you can't buy more than one game at a time. Since I don't trust anyone with my CC, I use a service that will randomly generate a card for you and you can set monthly limits. There are a huge number of nitwits who continually bash the system and say there is no point and you may as well buy a Raspberry Pi... forgetting the fact that it's impossible to get an RPi that is upgradable at all, let alone to 32gb of RAM.

It has pretty decent performance, which you can tweak once you unlock the bios. But for the most part it's just a mini computer with a very stylish case. It's what the Steam Machines should have been.

There have been some crazy sales on it, which the 'haters' insisted was because they're being dumped before discontinued. But so far Atari has actually held up all of their promises (eventually). It is indeed a 'streaming' machine, as you can get xbox game pass, Geforce Now (something I don't think even the Deck officially has yet?) and Stadia, etc.

It's too bad Liam didn't get a hold of one, as it's definitely a 'Linux Game Console' at heart.
I guess it's a very small company, so the shortcomings on the software side is kinda expected, but I think they seriously should make their store available on the web even if it's only for listing what's on the system without actually being able to buy anything through the website.
I think at this point they just need to survive. If they do they can come up with a new iteration that is more powerful and can improve their software situation a bit.
Can you run Steam on their OS without installing a different distro? Also, how compatible is their OS with regular Linux distros, can you for example somehow copy an AppImage and have it run on their OS?
The launcher in their OS basically uses .desktop files. The games installed on there are basically AppImages (if I recall they're called .bundle, though maybe that is just the folder... ) you can copy them off and onto a Linux distro and they just work.

No Steam, though I want to say the Steam Link app is available for it? I'd have to look again. Mind you, even if you could install Steam, you only have ~30gb of space to play with, unless you add more storage. You can use a USB drive though. Internally you just slap in a m.2 SATA SSD and if you install Linux, the AtariOS can also use it for extra storage if need be. I dual-boot mine with Debian as it's one of the few that work without disabling secureboot.

One of the highest rated games on Steam, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is Steam Deck Verified

Quoting: Perkeleen_VittupääI see the first one had native Linux support but Divinity II does not
Which is part of the reason I'm not giving Larian any money anymore, yes.

They completely fucked up Linux support for Divinity: Original Sin, then had it there for the Enhanced Edition, but by then they already started on Divinity: Original Sin II and didn't merge anything back. Just an utter clown car of a company.
That then somehow managed to get the contract for Baldur's Gate III. As opposed to Dark Alliance III, which dropped the Baldur's Gate line, should have just been called 'The Crystal Shard' as it seems to either copy the story from that, or made it a sequel to that book... But it got boring fast, and the mechanics seemed no where close to what Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance one and two were like...

Ha, sorry for my rant, it's a shame that Divinity: Original Sin II didn't get a Linux port. The first one (once it had EE) played fantastic on Linux.

I'm using them in Elite: Dangerous. Two are bound to strafe left/right, the other two are bound to "Full Spectrum System Scanner" and "next target on route".

While I haven't installed that game yet on the deck, I've also seen that a community layout for Old World uses the back buttons for some overlay toggles.
I mean Elite Dangerous has so many buttons that I'm stuck in Windows to play it until either Thrustmaster ports it, or someone creates their own version of the TARGET software to script all the things for the Warthog...

Still baffles me how people play it with a game pad :P I bought it for the PS4, and it does seem playable enough, but I just miss the flight stick!

Dota 2 gets a nice performance improvement with the Vulkan renderer

Quoting: Purple Library GuyFeels kind of strange to hear that the NVidia driver has a Vulkan feature before the open source AMD driver. Maybe this is more common than I realize, but I'd gotten the impression that other than for their own in-house stuff the NVidia Linux drivers tended to lag.
It's almost always been the opposite in my experience. Nvidia usually drives the majority of innovation in the hardware and driver department, and back in the day had one of the best non-SGI OpenGL implementations (ironically started out as an open source project). They continued that with Vulkan. It's why I still use nVidia cards everywhere... well except my Atari VCS and the Steam Deck :P Oh, and I use a Radeon 9250 occasionally in my Amiga, but it was swapped with a Voodoo 3...

There was some guy on Steam that was running his mouth off about even Valve switching Dota2 over to proton because he didn't understand what Steam Linux Runtime meant.

Quoting: TheRiddickNot a huge fan of track pads in general really.
They work quite wonderfully for games that need mouse, or mouse look, etc. Like I can't stand playing FPS games on analog sticks most of the time, but the Steam Controller and Steam Deck are fantastic.

On the flip side of that, there are absolutely times when I think the trackpad on the macbook is trash, and infuriating...

The thing is awesome. Also I think it is the only way to get a native Linux build of Tempest 4000? It supports DOSbox and Atari 7800 roms, though they have been doing Friday releases of 7800 games, and a bunch of other stuff comes out for it. Most games though are just the same as on Steam. I follow threads on AtariAge on it where the trashing of it has died down as it turns out it is a fairly capable box.

I keep meaning to boot into my Debian install and fix it up so it boots into the Deck interface. Then see how it performs in comparison to the Deck. Or may just install holoiso...
