Cross-platform open source lighting control OpenRGB has a huge release out with plugins

Speaking of that, I had the strangest thing happen when I upgraded. Windows 10 now seems to not only sniff out what hardware you have installed and installs the driver, but now it prompts you to ask if you would like to install the utilities for it. Like it prompted me to install the Armor utility from Asus (I think that is what they call their RGB stuff.) I also had my work laptop prompt me for Logitech's utilitues for the luttle dongle I have plugged in for my T650.. it had been plugged in for months, and I hadn't done any updates to windows that I have seen to enable such an odd feature.

Quoting: foobrewActually have the Asus TUF Wifi, and I turned it off in the windows app already.Quoting: slaapliedjeSweet, a utility for Linux to turn off all the RGB on the motherboard :)What motherboard are you using that doesn't let you just turn it off in the BIOS? You don't need a utility for that.

Hints appear of Valve making a handheld Steam "SteamPal" Neptune console

Quoting: Sir_DiealotJust heard of this thing being planned.Well targeting the SteamPal would be targeting Linux, seeing as how what it would come down to is coding for Steam API (the input, the other benefits of Steam, etc) and since it's just Steam under the hood and Linux, they'll get more performance out of straight up targeting Linux. The games will work on Desktop or SteamPal. So yeah, it'll at least allow more people to switch to Linux in the long run.
If they manage to make a device that looks attractive as alternative to or even over preferable over the Switch then it may well work out. Obvious pros are the large selection of games available and the presumably small effort to get games to work on it. The obvious problem is that the Switch is very well established as _the_ handheld gaming device.
If it does succeed it will massively increase the Linux player base, in a sense. Keep in mind though that developers will not target Linux, they will target the SteamPal, which happens to run Linux. So whether that would improve general Linux support is an open question. For example, we do not know whether developers will port more games to Linux or rely on Proton.

Quoting: Arcadius-8606Nice! These days I prefer to get together to play RPGs and not have to lug thousands of dollars of equipment around. Or in the case of most of my friends, they don't even have rigs that can game decently enough anyhow. Though sadly... I do have enough old hardware that if we did a LAN party with some older games, I own enough for myself that people wouldn't have to bring their own :P Cheap thinkpads on ebay... kind of a curse!Quoting: slaapliedjeMMOs (specifically WoW) killed our LAN games... but that was many moons ago.Sorry to hear that. My original crew was 17 deep. We lost some around 2000ish when many of us became parents. Dwindled down to 6 to 9. Then around 2010 spiked back up for a few years to 15 to 17 bi-weekly. Now we are a solid 9 with ppl floating in and out to as high as 23 on good weekends.
Judge upholds $4M damages in the patent case against Valve for the Steam Controller

Quoting: gustavoyaraujoI have 3 Steam Controller and I should say it's an awesome piece of hardware, I hope Valve will keep supporting it to work with Steam.Same here. The nicest support is when they properly support the Steam Input API. Then it should detect which controller you have, and map the in-game button graphics to correspond to it! One of the most annoying things I encounter in games these days is that they standardize on the Xbox button layout, even if you're using a playstation controller. Not enough developers utilize that though.. :(
If you're looking for a virtual table-top check out the latest Foundry VTT

This one has the closest to official support for GURPS. I mean still unofficial, as I think SJGames' policy doesn't really allow for full on automation of the system digitally. But it has the closest any of the VTTs have ever gotten! Also cross platform from the beginning, unlike so many others...

Quoting: ElectricPrismSadly this happened with the eeebooks (I think that's what they were called. Those little mini laptops from way back when). They came with Linux and most users would install WinXP on them.Quoting: elmapulworse than that, some people are already installing windows on it to get acess to more games. if most people do that, then supporting it will be useless to increase our marketshareWe've come full circle guys. Imagine, people who want to use Windows have to start from a device shipped with Linux XD. So funny.
I've been on the fence about this device for a while and set low-expectations imagining it would never come to fruition. But seeing as how they will be launching with some retailers like BestBuy, GameStop, etc... that's off to a good start. I guess I'll see you all in about 2 weeks to see what the verdict is from the Linux Sphere.

So at this stage because of how broken it is (not requiring a working prototype, fee based, etc) then a company would simply be incompetent if it didn't file for patents for everything it possibly could.
The crap thing is, that means your inventor that comes up with a brilliant plan in their garage is more likely to get screwed out of it and still live the rest of their lives poor while their invention is sold to millions. This is because most of the time they'll try to take it to some company, and the company is likely to just say 'we'll that's neat, but we're not interested in it at this time.' Then maybe a year or 5 later will release something based on that idea.
And since there is a non-insignificant cost associated with filing a patent, getting one without corporate backing or financial risk (as you could apply and still be denied), it really does screw out the 'little guy'.

Quoting: FurysparkFor the most part, if you are a company and DON'T patent things, you'll basically come up against someone who DID and the worse part is, a patent doesn't even require a working prototype. You can basically just show a schematic of how it would/should work. Pay the patent fees, and you're good. Then you just wait until some big company tries to do something similar, and sue. Cool, easy 4 million dollars.Quoting: GuestDo you paladins really think Valve owns no patents [External Link]?Nobody here (afaik) is paladining for Valve. They're blackguarding against this horrid patent.
And I agree with them.

Quoting: NoStThis one is already on my wishlist. One of my favorite dungeon crawlers was Captive. I'm still shocked there are people online that claim to have beaten it, it's a huge freaking game.
While I love fantasy, it's still nice to have a dungeon crawler with a different theme once in a while. And dungeon crawler + horror seems like a very interesting mix.

Quoting: ExidanI'm gonna bet it's just a steam controller, steam link and a screen smooched together, so you can stream from your desktop to a handheld thing.I mean I could already do that from my GPD Win... but it's too loud for normal Windows operations, let alone actual gaming / streaming...
