Quoting: jensThe login flow has been fixed in the meantime in the alternative wine-mono. I think the only inconvenience left is that after closing the launcher, you also have to press stop in Steam to really close it.Not to mention Launchers are garbage for 'couch gaming'. Also, both Star Trek Online and ED say I have MANY more hours of playing than I actually do as I have left the launchers open for days...
Yeah, sometimes I think it requires more work to get all the launchers running than the games itself, looking e.g. at Rockstar..

Quoting: Mountain ManThey were no where near as popular in the USA as they were in Europe. There is a reason there are large amounts of software for the ST especially that was made in German. Even in the 8 bit days, they had much longer support outside of the USA.Quoting: slaapliedjeI'm not sure what your reference is to Amiga and Atari ST in Europe, because those were both very popular home computers here in the US.Quoting: Mountain ManAh, much like the days of the Amiga and Atari ST, it's better to live in Europe if you want 'alternate' phones.Quoting: NibelheimThose prices are very reasonable. I would love to get away from Android and Google and the "always on" tracking system built into Android phones.Quoting: pbAny word on the price? I would like that but with a bit more ram...16GB eMMC/2GB of LPDDR3 RAM = 150$
32GB eMMC/3GB of LPDDR3 RAM + HUB = 200$
Anyway, I could always install a third-party open source OS on my Pixel 3, which is tempting but not without its risks, and since I do depend on my phone for work (primarily SMS for logging into certain remote systems), I really can't afford a bricked phone if something were to go awry.

You know, by the time I try to sit down and play this more than just loading it and starting the tutorial, CK4 will be out and I will have spent 1k on DLC for this like I did with CK2...
My experiences of Valve's VR on Linux

Granted at this point I need someone to port the Thrustmaster software over to Linux so I can use the Warthog set up I bought! (I even got a new panel to help me with the control layout.)

Quoting: scaineIt's the Valve Index, slaapliedje. I bought the pack - HMD, lighthouses, knuckles.Interesting. It has been a while since I tried it in VR on Linux, winder if something changed, as it definitely wasn't all that playable for me with Proton (at least inside stations).

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI am pretty sure Apple just does not care about gaming. Though one would think you could use hardware accelerated ray tracing for more serious applications, like video rendering...Quoting: CatKillerAny indication from anywhere what the hold up was? I'd imagine that AMD and Intel not having hardware to support it would have left the aims of the extension fuzzy at the beginning, but they'd have known what was going into their silicon a long time ago. Was it an oversight? Or some tricky problem that needed solving?Apple have been such tools about this stuff.
Still, I'm glad it's finally here, and hopefully the delay hasn't lost Vulkan critical time with developer mindshare relative to DirectX 12.
Edit:
They've also confirmed that the overall functionality has been unchanged since the provisional release.Ugh. So they just told everyone not to use it for 8 months for literally no reason. Great.
Edit 2:
So, reading through the notes it seems that the problem was trying to have both easy mapping from DXR to Vulkan and easy mapping of Vulkan to Metal. It turns out that they can't have both, and they've decided to ditch Metal. That makes sense for our use-case, but it sucks for Khronos, since MoltenVK was an explicit target for them. I can see why they wouldn't want to take that decision quickly.

Quoting: scaineWhich VR headset are you using? As the resolution of course makes all the difference.Quoting: childermassYep, I play E:D in VR with my card (it's a "AMD Radeon Sapphire Pulse RX 5700 XT 8Gb", btw). I played about 80 hours 2D on my GTX1080, which was a decent experience, and then played a further 100 hours or so in VR with my 5700XT. The VR experience is next to flawless. I had to enabled "hardware cursors" in the settings or my mouse didn't work. Very occasionally, I'll get a one or two second lag when exiting Supercruise when approaching a station. No idea what causes it, but it's rare enough that I don't care - maybe 1 in every 20 stations will get this weird pause. It's not a graphical pause either, the whole game locks up, then springs back into life. It happened in 2D on my 1080 too, so I think it's maybe just a weird Proton issue. Hell, it might even happen in Windows.Quoting: slaapliedjeIf you're planning on Elite in VR, wait and get either a 3080 or a 6800 XT. I have a 2080, and it's playable in Windows, but gets ~100 fps less in Linux/Proton. And while it still runs ~190fps outside in space, inside stations you'll yack as the framerate drops a whole lot! I'm hoping if I get either a 3080 or 6800xt (haven't decided yet) I can finally play Elite: Dangerous in Linux. Thanks for the suggestions! I'll think about it, although those cards might be beyond my budget and I was also hoping to get this set up before Christmas, so availability might be a problem. Besides, I got the impression from scaine and at least one other person in the comments on this article that the 5700XT performance for Elite in VR was pretty good?
But that's the only glitch I've encountered. In VR, the game is simply breath-taking on the 5700XT.
EDIT to note that apparently the supercruise lag is really common [External Link], and across all formats... even consoles! I play in Solo and it even affects me there, so it sounds like it might be a market update from their server hanging? It doesn't sound like it's fixed, that's for sure!

Quoting: ShmerlMy Sapphire Pulse RX 5700XT turns fans off under low load, without any custom fan curves.I think it's a fairly standard feature now, right? My 2080 does the same thing. Hell, my CPU cooler's fans don't both run all the time, and the second one only kicks on under load. Then again, I have a heatsink on it that is rather massive. https://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-d15 [External Link]

Quoting: childermassI'm planning a new build, where I won't be starting with VR immediately but would like to keep open the option of getting a VR setup (probably a Valve Index) to play Elite: Dangerous in the future. I noticed that scaine and others have RX 5700 XTs. Could I please ask which specific cards you have, whether you're happy with them, how quiet they are, or if anyone has any other recommendations for good GPUs for a setup like this? I've seen lots of discussion about RX 5700 XTs having an abnormally high idle power consumption (example [External Link] ). Has anyone else run into this?If you're planning on Elite in VR, wait and get either a 3080 or a 6800 XT. I have a 2080, and it's playable in Windows, but gets ~100 fps less in Linux/Proton.
