Quoting: Sil_el_motyeah. Planet Bob rules! A titan a.e.-reference?
Maaaaaybe! :D loved that film

Quoting: slaapliedjeHow do you gwt the framerate counter to show, curious what I was getting for the brief period of time I loaded it in flat mode.
Steam settings -> In-Game (left bar) -> In-game FPS counter (dropdown box).
Ha, I knew I'd found that setting before, thanks!

Also needed to make sure to change the max FPS in the settings, was wondering why it was stuck at 60. Oh man does it run fast at 120.

Quoting: Sil_el_motthe trick doesn't work for me on arch. did everything and on the second try i even changed the name liam in the starting options to my folder ;) ... but it gave me just 5fps. 60fps instead of 55 before.

Yeah, me too. it's a shame a lot of my friends don't like it. i really love the soundtrack, too!
Now that you name your planets "Bob" i need a new name for mine. :(
Movie was great. I was getting a pretty solid 120fps (after I changed the max FPS to 120 from 60) I also have a g-sync monitor, though I've read it doesn't work if you have two....

It did dip back down to 26fps when I entered the Space anomaly. I haven't tried it without the Hack.

"I shall call this land... This Land..." "I shall call it your grave!" (Also by the same writer as Titan A.E.)

I know in VR (under Windows where for now is the only place I could get it to work) if you are planetside and running through thick trees, it gets pretty choppy. Pretty smooth otherwise. I do hope they fix the flight mechanics.

Just tried it on Manjaro. Without the AMD hack, it still just crashes in SteamVR. Though with the hack it hangs the system for a good while, then crashes. :P

Awesome, it is 6am and I can't sleep, guess it is time to try this out!

Quoting: joaojottaDID NOT make the game playable on my machine. Didn't evenget to the launch screen. None of the tricks worked. Maybe I'm missing something...
Anyway: if we ever cross our paths in space, I'm Cmdr Calenulma.
https://github.com/redmcg/wine/wiki [External Link] has an explanation that has worked for me.

Huh, I think they changed the instructions on there, but now it seems easier. https://www.protondb.com/app/359320 [External Link] has various suggestions too.

Fly high commanders. o7

Quoting: FaalagornGuess it's time to pop back to Elite; heck maybe I even buy the DLC some day later on, as I onlt have the base game :)
Totally worth it. I bought two copies of the full game and thrustmaster controllers for some friends so we could all play. Sadly one of them didn't have time to play it, and the other one played a lot when I couldn't and ended up getting an Anaconda, though he did it one of the cheap ways where you could keep logging out if they didn't give you a good paying job. Ha, they fixed that since.

Game has a steep learning curve, or it used to, apparently they created a much nicer tutorial, and simplified a few things, like scanning.

Quoting: 1xokI played Elite for the first time in the 80s. Back then on the C64. It was my absolute favorite game. An incredible job that Braben and Bell had done. Elite: Dangerous captures the spirit of the original Elite perfectly. I am very grateful for that. But even more grateful for Proton and Valves efforts around Linux.
Yep. I played the Spectrum version first (I still have my original boxed copy, and remember buying it as if it was last week), but I played it on a friend's C64 lot too. And on the school BBCs when the teachers weren't looking. The Commodore's framerate wasn't as good (then again, these things are relative :) ), but I did always envy the Dodec stations. I think it was the first version to have them. And Trumbles, but I wasn't so bothered about missing out on those. ;)

I said before that I think Dangerous spoils the spirit of Elite by being always-online, since part of the genius of the original (and Frontier) was that you had a whole galaxy on one disk (or tape), but that's a minor niggle. It really is the Elite we all imagined in our heads back in the '80s. I still maintain that the original is the Best Game Ever Made. Open-world, open-ended 3D space combat and trading back in 1984 on an 8-bit machine with 32K of RAM? There's no contest.

[Edit: Oh, and I'm CMDR Gripebucket. I have no idea where that came from; it seemed funny at the time. I don't play Open very often, though.]
Sadly, Elite never made it to the Atari 8bit, so the first one I played was the second on the ST, but didn't play it much, because at the time I did not have the manual.

Unfortunately my commander name is some number because I wasn't paying attention to when they were letting people change it!

Quoting: KimyrielleNice article! I bought that game when it launched, but never really played it much. Maybe it's time to dust whatever rust-bucket of a ship I had in ED and take her on a ride! :D
It is fun, but I try to make sure I have a few hours to play it, though it's better than No Man's Sky where you can only save with certain things. Elite you just log out.

But man, in VR it is the ultimate escape from reality. Get a nice X52 pro (make sure it's either one of the Logitech ones, or one of the Saitek ones, and not the madcatz one). Excellent game.

Also No Man's Sky is crap for controlling the space ship in VR (I have the Index, and it's just not the same as using the x52 Pro).

Quoting: elmapulthe game is running on linux? you forgot to mention that... some times an emulator isnt running as fast on linux as it is on windows.
in some cases the linux build dont even compile, sigh.
example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ka6C7pDg3vA [External Link]

but you know what would be cool? if we forget stupid projects like atari vcs that dont have any chance to compete against the likes of ps4(and 5), xbox one(and scarlet) and nintendo switch(or whetever they come up after) and instead focus on making sure that linux is the best platform in terms of breaking exclusivity (funding projects like this, more than the windows folks do, making sure we are their priority)
Spec wise, the Atari VCS isn't far off the PS4 (assuming the specs are legit). Will it compete with the PS4/5? Probably not because Nutari (as some have not so fondly referred to them as) doesn't have oodles of money like Sony does. But the AMD hardware they're using is more powerful than say a Switch is. In fact the Switch isn't all that powerful at all, the only thing that makes it cool is the form factor (portable plus dockable). It's an nVidia Tegra X1, which was released in 2015.
you forgot that nintendo have exclusive games.
and so does sony.
by the time atari launch their console, sony will anounce ps5 and everybody will save money for it.

i know its not trying to compete with ms,sony and nintendo, but the question is, who gonna buy it? aside from linux fanboys and people who fell nostalgy for atari?
People who wanted Steam Machines? :P

Switch has very few exclusives. I have a Switch, but none of the exclusives have really kept my attention. Breath of the Wild was decent, but I'm so used to other open world games, that it was infuriating to me that you can't actually craft items. I stopped playing it a long while ago.

But if you'd noticed what I said, it's going to be the software library that matters. The funny thing is everyone keeps saying that it's nothing more than a raspberry pi that costs too much, and that's not quite true. But yeah if there is no software for it, who cares? Or if there is no software that you can't just run on a cheap Linux box, who cares. Only thing it has going for it above that is probably the size, it still is pretty difficult to build your own PC that is console sized and not have severe heat issues, or bad performance.
nintendo has just the most famous exclusives and some of the most famous franchises ever.
plus its the only way to play good games on the god (aside from a few android ports, all android have is gambling games) so in an certain way, all switch games are "exclusives" they are on mobility
Yeah, was kind of irritated that Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 was exclusive to the Switch. That and I prefer the artistic style of the previous 2. Still should spend more time playing it.

You're right though, the mobility and docking capability of the Switch is what makes it awesome. I bought Civilization VI for it so I could play it on the road.
