Linux hardware vendor System76 has begun teasing their new 'open-source computer'

Quoting: wvstolzingIs it going to be a RISC-V system?
I hope so, that'd be great! Problem is no games or anything binary will work on it, but then again... open source computer! They didn't really say if that was going to go into laptops as well, did they?

Quoting: slaapliedjeHopefully this doesn't turn out to be another Sword Coast: Legends, which looked absolutely awesome, then fell flat on it's face.
That was tragic, but I don't see this happening to Pathfinder as I saw over 10K users on now and I think it will hopefully have achieved 'critical mass' to continue.
Yeah, I think we need a Neverwinter Nights 3 :)
We have NWN Enhanced Edition... IIRC they are upgrading the graphics for it. All it needs is new campaign modules
Yeah they are doing some tweaks like adding shaders and such, the problem is that it's still NWN at it's core, and NWN2 had a better/improved editor, and they haven't even said yay / nay on porting the NWN editor to Linux yet. So with the exception of it being easier to install, and some new effects, it's the same situation we've been in since the game released.

Quoting: PinballWizardThis is a big deal- also, why on earth doesn't the steam controller configuration work on the linux client for steam? They have their own Ubuntu-based distribution this is meant to run on so why on earth doesn't it work in Ubuntu itself?
What? Steam Controller on Linux Steam works perfectly well, at least for native games. This tool is helpful for games outside of Steam, for those people who don’t want to use Steam client (the other way to get SC working for non-Steam games is to add them to the Steam library, like one would probably do eg. on Windows).

EDIT: OK, one exception to the perfectly well part. For some reason there is no force-feedback available for Steam Controller on Linux with the Steam client.
So when I was trying to get the controller set up for Dead Cells it just kept defaulting back to the controller's default configuration. I tried a lot of different things but the only answer was using the sc controller UI to configure the buttons. When researching why I was told basically that programming the buttons via big picture mode in Ubuntu just doesn't work; that was basically my experience with it too.
Some games just have issues. Dead Cells is a great game, but it has broken Steam integration in the Linux version, which means you can't configure the SC. That's not Steam's fault or the controller, it's a game issue.
Hopefully they fix that in Dead Cells, been wanting to try it out...

No. Just no.
He was being sarcastic.
I am very much aware of that, however I wanted to make it clear that we don't condone that type of behaviour. What did a rabbit ever do? Apart from constantly trying to eat my sofa...
They'll bite your head off... look at the bones!!

What it comes down to is this;

Code used to be accepted based on the merit of the code itself, which is exactly how open source projects should be. It's all about the code. Now the problem is if someone submits code that is bad, and the maintainers state that the code is bad, and needs to be changed, the person submitting the could can play the 'transphobic' card. "You just don't like the code because I wrote it, and you hate me for $reasons!" Which means people will be pressured into accepting crappy code, and the project fails.

There is a reason why you shouldn't discuss genders/preferences/whatevers on github, mailing lists, etc. Has no one learned anything about the Internet? Remember old chat boards and forums and such, where (I don't know about anyone else) but I always assumed the person I was talking to was someone I'd never be interested in anything more than having a conversation with. Just like in WoW or other MMOs, it's always safe to assume it's a dude on the other end of that female avatar. Yet I still know of quite a few people who tried to hook up with or flirt with people over those games. Granted, these days a lot of people use voice chat, but still...

I'm hoping, but not expecting it to be any different than when FreeBSD adopted this CoC; where long time contributors just stopped and dropped out of caring about it.

PlayStation 3 emulator 'RPCS3' is coming along nicely with some major improvements

Quoting: Kristian"One of the trends that Half Life spawned back in the very late 1990's was to include both good mod tools and then a SDK."

It wasn't really started by Valve. id did it with Quake 2 before Valve with Half-Life and this was a continuation of an earlier tradition with for example QuakeC for Quake and .con files in Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem 3D. But I think Quake 2 was the first one to were actual (in that case) C source code was released. Basically something like that was the standard for the FPS games of the mid to late 90s and to around the mid 2000s. Even games released by companies such as Activision. I wish it still was.

id went even further by, as you noted, releasing the full source code of their games(engine and all, in later releases also including tool source code) after a certain number of years. (I should note that unlike the id source code releases which were under the GPL the Descent games source code had a custom license that doesn't comply with either the free software definition or the open source definition).
Pretty sure Doom was the first one that they released the source to, and there were modding tools long before that. Not sure if you'd call them a full SDK, but there definitely were tools available.

Ha, is that why Red Dead Redemption is stuck on the PS3. My PS3 is failing, otherwise I'd try to spend more time playing that!

The Bard's Tale trilogy is another one of those where they apparently lost the source code and the remaster had to be programmed from the ground up.

I totally agree about mandating an open sourcing of engines after X amount of years. It's not like they'd have to give away any of the data. Of course if you follow what RMS suggests, it's the same thing, though he'd rather it be open source from the start.
