Actually, Linux is the defacto standard in the movie (post-production/VFX) industry, and basically every AAA blockbuster movie since the early 2000's up to today have been made on Linux workstations and rendered on Linux servers. Because of this, all relevant commercial 3D suites are available for Linux (except 3dsmax, but who cares.. even game studios use Maya nowadays). 2D (compositing and grading in this context) is done on Linux aswell. Of course Photoshop-ninjas won't change, but Krita is used by some studios and artists for concept art/graphics/textures, and even primarily game-dev apps such as Substance Painter is available for Linux (because it wants appeal to the VFX industry). Video editing, like sound design, have a harder time moving to Linux, even though commercial offerings are available. Commercial game engines and editors exists in some form (I guess Unity is in better shape than UE4.. don't know about CryEngine or Unigine).

In open source, we have Blender, Krita, GIMP (which is very capable despite its stigma), Ardour, Godot, Shotcut, Darktable, etc.

The notion that Linux is not a platform for graphical/"creative" work needs to stop. It is simply not true anymore, and haven't been for well over a decade. Next time you watch "Avengers" or "Star Wars" or whatever, enjoy the thought that all the CG/VFX was powered by Tux :)

I still recall all the articles about ILM ditching SGI for Linux machines oh so long ago. Also know WETA used it for Lord of the Rings. And those two are a huge majority of who studios hire for CGI.

Now if the stigma of 'Linux is hard' would end for the desktop so I did not have to defend myself for using it for work, where everyone has a mac or Windows laptop. Though weirdly I hear more issues with the mac users than the Windows ones..

Stuff like 'my battery drained because it didn't suspend and now it won't start up..' is pretty common.

That's my takeaway from Eike's latest post as well---and now that I know English is not Eike's first language, I can see that what I thought might be glib generalizations was in fact mere linguistic awkwardness.

And yes, I'm quite aware of the "dark" side, if you will, of free speech/expression---and I feel like that's the precisely why Valve has wisely reserved the right to remove content at their discretion---it's their company, so it's their call.

My thought on this is that if Valve let something into it's store in the first place, it shouldn't be able to randomly remove it because of some shift in someone's sensibilities. Granted, that doesn't help with some of the ones that crept in under Greenlight, but even those probably had some sort of final say.

I think of them yanking out the ones with animated breasts to be the equivalent of Utah stores banning all the nude magazines. Something that shouldn't have happened.

Shadow of War confirmed? Lol!

I am almost certain it is Shadow of War, several pages back I posted a youtube clip from Shadow of War of Balrog spawning from lava. Plus Sauron is in this game. Also, someone here mentioned Lucifer meaning "Light Bearer" in latin and Calimbrimbor is also the Bright Lord. I have really been looking forward to this game.

I can guarantee it's going to be Shadow of War. You know why? Because I gave up on waiting for it and started playing it under Windows... This happens EVERY time with Feral's games (except Rise of the Tomb Raider, which I had already gotten, but waited until it was on Linux to play.

I solved this problem by removing windows from all my home computers. I have been Windows free for a little over 2 years now.

I probably would have done so already if it weren't for VR. That and the plethora of games I already own, that I don't feel like mucking around with Wine for. Older games do seem to work better under Wine than Win10 though. Warwind 2 for example seems to work great under Wine. It's so old, I'm betting it won't work under Windows 10, haven't tried it though.

I thought I was the only one who enjoed the War Wind series.
Man those games were fun. :)

Ha, I knew a guy (well he used to be a friend until he went all nuts..) that made the comment specifically about that game that SSI didn't know how to make good strategy games. I grew up with SSI games. They used to make some of the best strategy games, I think the Warwind games were their first attempt at RTS though. Warwind 2 was one of those games that randomly performed badly on some systems.

The most I've heard about malware on snaps was that a couple of applications by a single developer had an undisclosed cryptocurrency miner built into them. No damage was done to anyone's computer or data, nor was any personal information scraped and sent back home.

The developer in question was attempting to commercially support his apps by integrating this CC miner and seemed to honestly not realize that this was going to be a problem. I suppose he thought that "CC-supported software is the new ad-supported software", which is an understandable conclusion for any blockchain enthusiast. It appears, at least to me, to be an attempt to innovate a new solution for commercially supporting a program that doesn't involve annoying the user with advertisements, as well as providing the developer with more freedom to create without being subjected to the ever-changing whims of advertising companies. The real issue here is the lack of disclosure, since it's damn obvious when ads are on an application, but not as obvious when CC miners are on an application. Considering the resource usage and electricity bills involved in mining cryptocurrency, I do think that ethically speaking, disclosure should be absolutely necessary when implementing an idea such as this one.

In any case, Ubuntu pulled both offending apps almost immediately, contacted the developer, established a dialogue and determined that this was more of a case of ignorance than malice. I expect Ubuntu will be more proactive in enforcing ethical requirements in the future with regards to cryptocurrency supported software.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard for Ubuntu to create a script on their end which will automatically unpack snaps, run them and check for the presence of cryptocurrency mining activity before they appear on the store. They could also create an option for uploaders to disclose how a commercial application is supported. If there isn't any disclosure, but the system detects mining activity, the snap could be rejected before it even appears on the store. If they're not working on something like this as we speak, they damn well better start.

Canonical/Ubuntu. The ones who put amazon searches by default within their Desktop Environment? Thought there was some other semi-shady things they did, like tracking searches and such?

I think Snap as a 'Everyone else is doing A, let's do B until we lose and we end up ditching it and going with A' that Ubuntu is almost famous for.

I'd say it's rather the opposite. It has always been easier for companies to censor and discriminate to appeal powerful religious/political organizations and stay out of their radar as much as possible.

I bet it won't be long until some of these assholes start a @boycottvalve campaign using some insignificant game that nobody is forced to buy or play as a pretext. As other people have noted, they left themselves a "trolling" loophole to allow staff to kick out stuff like Active Shooter, although they're sure to only do so if there's a lot of negative media attention first.

Oh yes, I did play some older ones. What I mean is doing a game where is used real person's name, place, date and time when they are going to be there and organizing a group IRL to attempt to kill him/her. IMO that should be illegal, since it's essentially planning a murder.

Honestly, it always seemed silly to me trying to censor "adult" games (those affected anime games on Steam don't even show anything, so label "adult" isn't probably right), but at a same time we have in so many games/movies brutality, murder, gore, litres of blood. It just feels arbitrary, to try to censor nudity/sex while violence is on every corner. In this case even more ridiculous, since it is all drawn, it is not even showing real people. I guess it is a work of "progressive" neo-puritans. If the trend continues (e.g. cancelling swimsuit part in some US miss show, firing grid girls and booth girls) US could live to see a law forbidding women to wear to indecent clothes. Such people should not be called liberals.

The corny argument "think of the children" is invalid in my opinion. It is responsibility of parents to shield children from such content, they have enough tools to do so (ratings, recommended age stickers, game descriptions, trailers, videos of gameplay). Nothing should be banned for adults/teens because of children.

This is a retarded cultural thing. I mean we all have nipples, yet it's acceptable to see man nipples, but not woman nipples?

Which will create confusion as the game is currently being sold on GOG [External Link], but due to Feral policy Linux version would not be available there.

Please don't make things up, Feral have never said that. Feral just happen to port games that are not on GOG and they won't throw their partners under a bus whose decision it will be on what store it goes on.

I don't even know why Feral gets picked on in this case, there is a rather huge list of games on GOG that have Linux versions available, but are not available on GOG.
