Doom (2016) could have been on Linux, id Software made a Linux version sound easy to do

Quoting: GuestHi Liam,

Have you tried contacting John Carmack or anyone from id Software and ask why they are so anti Linux? Doom runs great on WINE and has performance parity with Windows when using Vulkan.

Linux gaming has improved a lot since Feb 2013.
Carmack left id a long time ago, and that's pretty much when they stopped caring about Linux. Id is now owned by publisher Zenimax which has shown absolutely zero interest in Linux, so don't get your hopes up. Even if id wanted to bring games to Linux, Zenimax probably wouldn't allow it.
ZeniMax is all about taking a successful game of theirs and re-releasing it again and again (look at how many editions of Skyrim there are). They could do that with doing Ports too. Not sure how Valve would like that though :P

No, the original Doom was one of if not the first commercial game to have a Linux client, way back in 1994:

Not to mention Loki Software, more from id Software, Hyperion, Tribsoft, LGP, and many more.
All true, but the Diamond Edition of NWN was the only easily-available game (you could find in stores--how quaint!) I could get, and, when I later got some Loki games, they simply weren't any fun, mostly C+ games that didn't hold my interest. I do love Kohan:Immortal Sovereigns, but haven't played it in 7-8 years.

And I hate and despise FPS games. Because I totally suck at them.;)
I thought I was the only one that experienced the Kohan series.
Seems today you only can via wine, but there is nothing comparable even on Windows as far as i know.
Kohan was cool, I played only a bit of it, but it was good. It is too bad we do not have an easy way of getting a hold of the old Loki and LGP games on Steam. Myth 2 was ported as well, and I loved that game!

Abuse, Inner Worlds, and Hopkins FBI all beat Call to Power to Linux as far as I know.
I didn't think Abuse was commercially released, more like a game that was released after on Linux as open source. Never heard of Inner Worlds.

Call to Power was released / published and available (limited of course) in stores as a stand alone commercial release. Even now, most Linux releases come with the version for other operating systems. But maybe that is one of the reasons the old ways of getting the games out there failed? Gone are the days of Loki and LGP.

Xenosis: Alien Infection is Alien Breed meets System Shock and it's coming to Linux

Weren't the modern remakes of Alien Breed supposed to be released for Linux at one point? Anyone play the incredibly difficult Alien Swarm mod for Unreal Tournament? That was like Alien Breed as well.

But more on topic, this sounds amazing. I am in.

Civilization VI: Rise and Fall expansion arrives on Linux tomorrow (actually out now)

Quoting: GuestCiv6 graphics are worse than Civ5 or just bad graphics? Let's take a look.

Obviously, the CivVI graphics are centered on one simple thing, they used contrast so we can identify things better, but people wanted a Gears of War palette like Civ5, so realistic and mature, well, i'm playing a videogame where George Washington is leading an army of archers and iron sword warriors, that's realism for you.

About wasted space on UI, there are mods for that.

On the note of realism. I always thought in Civ that they should have had either basically you being a 'god' nudging mankind along, or make yor leaders grow old and require offspring to continue on the line and game. Then I saw Crusader Kings 2! And while I haven't had time to actually learn how to play the game... I can't help but think it would epic to have that style of game start from the Stone Age and go all the way up to future era. Could you imagine the challenge of keeping a family line alive for that long? And how much fun it would be? Of course I can't help but think if Enemy Mine where he recites the lineage....

I think the first commercially published and released game for Linux was Civilization: Call to Power, right? I mean sure there were source ports before that. Original Doom was never commercially released for Linux. By that I mean something that you could actually get the game for Linux, without having to get the data files to run with a binary.

Another early one that had Linux support was Unreal Tournament.

Ugh, no... and you already sort of can.

Zoom really far in... and move around with WASD.

By the way, anyone who ever says to get rid of the pie menu, should be lit on fire. I love the pie menu, and honestly couldn't play the second one because the menus were horrific.

The Linux-powered games console the Ataribox has become the Atari VCS
21 Mar 2018 at 9:28 pm UTC

Atari's long history has so many missed opportunities. It was only within the last year or so that I learned they could have been the US distributors for the NES. Instead they decided to push their 7800, which failed pretty miserably. Though sadly (much like the Sega Master System) was the superior hardware, just lacked games. Nintendo's savage marketing and distribution deals is about the only reason it won that era of console wars.

Quoting: slaapliedjeI'm the proud owner of two Atari Lynx's and two SD Lynx Carts. :) Brilliant machine for the time, too bad it had poor battery life and Atari wasn't able to market it very well and get developers on board...
I almost feel bad for giving my two Atari Lynx I away to a friend. OTOH, he really gives them TLC, that's worth something...
But sd-lynx carts... You can finally play alien on it!
Or all the other games that exist but were never ever sold. Actually abused as road filling in the USA. Blasphemy!
The one game that I think should have released but never did was Eye of the Beholder! It looks amazing on the Lynx, sadly Atari never managed to figure out how to get a chip in there for saving games at least without making the cartridges really expensive.

The AvP engine on it is really impressive though!

If you'd mixed up Amiga and Atari back in the 16bit A500/ST days, you'd have had both camps coming after you with torches and pitchforks. ;)
I'd fear a personal 'Jack Attack' from Mr. Tramiel himself.
To be technical; The Atari VCS (Original 2600) had Jay Miner as one of the designers. Same with the Atari 8bits. Then most of the designers left Atari, formed the HiToro company which later became Amiga, then was bought by Commodore...

And Atari was supposed to own them.. it's a whole thing...

So architecturally, Stella->ANTIC/POKEY->Agnus/Paula. C64 dudes designed the Atari ST.

Of course the newly planned / renamed VCS has nothing to do with any of that!
