I imagine it's due to Kubuntu being a more desktop-friendly OS just to "get it done" until support is properly ready in SteamOS. As for Kubuntu itself, probably just developer-choice.I imagine it's due to Kubuntu being a more desktop-friendly OS just to "get it done" until support is properly ready in SteamOS. My thought exactly. Not too much to read into this: SteamOS isn't for the desktop, Ubuntu and Debian are, and then Kubuntu is probably just the personal preference of the dev that owns this machine/made the demo work.

On the whole, I'm not terribly excited about VR, it doesn't do much for me. But hey, if it's out there and people want it, it's a good thing to have it available on our favourite open/free platform!
Not excited yet about VR too, it should have broader support (Valve seems to really want to work on that), but I like that implies push for Vulkan API on SteamOS and Linux from Valve part - which I fully support. So if we are wondering why Vulkan API has been actually that quickly and well supported on Linux (Nvidia binary driver, AMD binary driver, AMD open source community driver, Intel open source driver)...now we know that Valve is banking hard on Vulkan API.

If this means more games ported with good or even performance comparing to Windows...it will be very welcome side effect from me.

Obviously it is developer machine, so he just demoed tech. It would be cool to prepare Steam Machine, but it is unnecessary bling and PR when all you want to show is working VR on Linux.

So in nutshell SteamVR on Linux will support games supporting both SteamVR and Vulkan. I think it is fair decision to move forward considering performance requirements.

Steam VR will use Vulkan on Linux, demo shown off on Linux, new Vive controller being made

Considering VR requirements, Valve going directly to Vulkan and skipping OpenGL entirely makes sense. This also enables them to do same thing on Windows without much pain for developers. It seems Valve just ignore outside world again and do their own thing, building their platform fundamentally and properly. You won't such attitude in many companies these days.

This is huge, Vulkan adaptation has been quite rapid, and Linux editor being streamlined - awesome.

Game is somehow flawed masterpiece - due of publisher tactics - but it's certainly a AAA release and certainly something I am keen to check out.

Too much positive news lately. Linux gaming is dead, according to naysayers :D

Damn....Feral keep cracking. Loving those guys.

So it has been worth to wait? That tempts me to buy this one. I am not fan of genre, but I admit this is some old school fun games lack these days.

CD PROJEKT RED replied to me about The Witcher 3 and Linux, flat-out denying to answer any questions

I will go with - if they would have flat out answer "no", they would have told us at this point. I suspect things went sour a bit so it is left up in the air and is most likely above guy's pay grade to answer this question in first place.

I thing we got so far as we could. If people feel cheated, they should take it up with Steam, Valve and CD Projekt RED. You have done all you could.

GOG withdraw their statement about The Witcher 3 never planned for Linux, they have no idea
3 Sep 2016 at 7:20 pm UTC

Yeah, I would never ask confirmation or even take confirmation from support for such things. Regarding small features, prices, etc. yes, but they aren't that well informed about any future plans.

W3 still might not be happening on Linux, but I will guess it is not that simple 'yes' or 'no' answer at this point, which makes sense.
