W4 Games raised $8.5 million USD to support Godot Engine

Let's see where this goes, but I am not too worried. If the worst case happens and that company gets taken over by big-evil-business, I am very confident that Godot will get forked by a new dev team and live happily ever after. It happened after OpenOffice got taken over by big-evil-business, too. The good thing about open source is that it's fairly immune against hostile takeovers.

In the best case, this could be a positive game-changer for Godot. While not everything the team will be working on will get upstreamed to Godot, I am sure that a lot of it will.

Various BioShock games get a 2K Launcher calling it a 'Quality of Life Update'

Launchers are one of the biggest diseases to plague gaming next to lootboxes and NFTs. I have never, ever understood their purpose and never will. All they do is adding another unnecessary screen people have to click through and another source of potential problems. Other than that they do exactly nothing the game application couldn't do just as well from inside, while it's running.

Cities: Skylines is getting another expansion with Plazas and Promenades

Great to hear that they're still updating this game. I really hope they will one day give it a performance overhaul, though. The game gets really laggy when a city grows, even without a lot of user-made content installed.
The other thing I am still hoping for is American-style roads/signs. Our roads look fairly different from the European style used in the game, and it would be nice being able to build cities that actually resemble the ones I am used to. There have been mods doing that in the past, but the devs had a knack for breaking them time and again, so official support for that would be great.

Other than that, yes, support for pedestrian zones is great. I am going to buy that DLC, for sure.

It's generally a disturbing development when a handful of super-large corporations unilaterally decide what we can see, post or access on the internet. These people are deciding on content rules in some conference rooms that affect us all, without having any democratic legitimization to do that. Deciding what content or service is illegal is the elected government's job, not Google's, Meta's or Apple's. It's about high-time to pass legislation that services cannot deny or limit user access to any information or service that's legal in the user's jurisdiction.

W4 Games formed to help developers using Godot Engine

Quoting: ValckEDITed after jumping over to read the actual FAQ:
Throughout the development of our products we will be open sourcing as much as we can, including additions to Godot that strengthen the engine.
And there you have it... "as much as we can", as opposed to "everything because we have to". Marketing speech and business as usual.
Well, if they work on proprietary stuff to allow games to run on consoles, they simply CAN'T upstream -everything- just...as much as they can?

Not sure if you read evil intent into their words when there isn't any? At least I don't think they are going to last in this business for very long if they build a reputation for exploiting the open source engine their business is based on, without giving back.

Quoting: denyasisGas Station Simulator??

Maybe I'm biased, or dumb, or too close to the source material, but I don't really understand at all the appeal of these "blue collar/service" job simulators.
It's really funny how people seem keen to play games simulating jobs they'd never want to do in real life. I have seen a Lawn Moving Simulator, too. That's that involuntary weekend activity most of us constantly complain about...

People are weird. :D

I almost hate myself for saying something positive about MS, but for the sake of objectivity: Their gaming branch always refrained from using more predatory/shady business models. Compared to companies like EA and Ubisoft at least, who seemed to have no quarrels using shady monetization schemes such as lootboxes and NFT.

Kudos on them for staying away from that NFT rubbish. Does anything symbolize the infinity of human greed better than NFT?

Unity to 'merge' with ironSource with a buzzword salad press release
13 Jul 2022 at 6:05 pm UTC Likes: 14

I looked at Unity back in the days when Godot was in its early infancy and not yet a serious contender. I can see why Unity became so popular, particular back at a time when it was more or less the only affordable professional game engine around.
But honestly, unless your project needs very advanced 3D features, Godot is probably going to do the trick these days and it's 100% free, no strings attached. Compared to Unity, Godot is super-lightweight and efficient, which is a big plus. And version 4 is around the corner, which will close a lot of the feature-gaps Godot admittedly still has. The scripting language is probably a matter of taste. For me personally? I am having a blast with it. If you have some experience with Python and don't mind that language, GDscript is pretty easy to get into.

These days, I guess Unity is popular because it's already popular and there is no shortage of people having experience with it. Other than that, I find it harder and harder to come up with reasons to use Unity over Godot. But that's just my opinion of course. :)
