Editorial: No, Valve is not killing SteamOS or the Steam Controller

If it was simple to run a hardware accelerated SteamOS VM in any distribution, then we would have solved a massive issue.

Quoting: liamdaweI give you this sensationalist piece from SoftpediaOf course, from Softpedia, you could not expect more. We should not call them journalist as it is insulting the profession.
Quoting: cRaZy-bisCuiTActually part of the problem is already us: Honestly, who did buy a steam machine, a steam controler or uses SteamOS here in the forum? It will only be very few people. And we're already the ones who are into Linux. So what is the user base they so actually aim for?Maybe few of us got a Steam machine but when one already have a Linux box, buying one is a bit superflous. On the other hand, when in need of a new machine, one garanteed to have good Linux support may be a nice option. Being already on Linux, i was a bit skeptic about SteamOS first. Now i think we absolutely need it. Binary distribution is one of the main problem on Linux. I'm on Arch too, i've seen the large amount of AAA games not working well out of the box on Arch. Having a standard runtime to build against is just nécessary. We need to be able to say developers: just test on SteamOS and it be fine. We can not tell them: just test on every possible distribution and for rolling release, test every days too.

Does the GOG version of the game requires Galaxy for multiplayer? And can GOG users play with their Steam friend?

I think the best solution is running steamos in a container. The only tricky part is installing in the container the exact same version of mesa (llvm too maybe) that the host uses.
Dual booting in SteamOS works, one can even share installed games between Arch and SteamOS, but it's annoying.

Quoting: meggerman4. Linux users tend to choose stable distros like Ubuntu / Mint for gaming. But people use Arch based distros like Antergos, OBRevenge, Manjaro etc.. These are more upto date meaning newer libraries .. BUT .. in most cases they are typically backwards compatibleI love Arch, i use it as much as i can but we must admit that a rolling distro is not a good target for binary distribution. Looking at game's bug reports, lots of issues come from Arch users. I tested Steam os, indeed many games with issues on Arch were running flawlessly: Dead Island DE, Cossacks, etc.

When it's about getting easy money from us, gog is very good (a DOSBox wrapper is not a hard thing at all). But to port a client that is sometimes required for multiplayer (Zombasite) then they ignore us. I'm looking forward when Itch.io is the main DRM-Free store. At least they treast us well.
Shadow of Mordor is currently 80% off and free to play for a few days

Indeed, very nice game. Fighting mini bosses on open aera was, to me, the most interesting idea. I have't seen such freedom since Skyrim. If the second one comes to Linux, it will be an instabuy :)
ARK: Survival Evolved has just had a price increase, it has more than doubled

The Linux version is, to be absolutely blunt, terrible. It looks nothing like the Windows version graphically, performs very poorly for me (lots of reports of terrible performance on Windows too though) and some of it is completely broken on Linux.Oh no, we should not say such things ;) They might feel hurt and will likely abandon their port of ARK3 :p
The Witcher 3 didn't come to Linux likely as a result of the user-backlash from The Witcher 2

They don't care about porting Galaxy, that's the only rational thinking. But they know that cancelling it would result in a backslash. I'm sure they prefer keeping us waiting for something that may never than creating a massive wave of complaigns. To be honest, i find it insulting. This is extremely rude. They should be honest with their custumers (us).

Quoting: ZeloxThey have answered this; That's exactly what i say when i don't want to do something ;) Two years to port a simple think like Galaxy? They already distribute Linux builds, so the only non trivial part of porting Galaxy is networking. Few months would be understandbale, but more than 2 years and still no ETA?

There is no ETA, but its planned and worked on atm.
I would like some more feed back from the devs tho, dont like the silence, only makes me confused.
But thats the latest news we got from it, atleast what I know of.

Well, at the end of the day, we have still no real information about what happened. What would be very interesting is some feedback from VP now that they have done so many ports. I do really want to know if this is profitable for them. It is the most important question as it determines whether or not we will continue to have ports in the near future. If i remember correxctly, Aspyr said few months ago that they were on balance. What about VP?

Personal attacks against developers is indeed unforgivable and should never happen. I'm sorry for what happend to you Jaycee. But i can't beleive that this is the only reason why CDPR canceled the project.
At the time, Valve seems to have done a lot to convince companies to port their games on our platform. Many devs said they would not have done it without Valve. Maybe they were expecting higher sales from TW2.
My bet is CDPR and GOG see us as too small to invest now but they do not want to to close the door either. So they stay in between. Look at what GOG does with Galaxy. It is still supposed to come to Linux "eventually" (see the FAQ), they even maked it "in progress". But 2 years after ... still nothing.
CDPR guys are not stupid, they knew the release was made much too early. The port was not ready for public release. Don't get me wrong, VP did a very good job! The port increased a LOT after release and next ports by VP are very nice. But CDPR could not expect being acclaim with a public release which was mostly unplayable.
So a note to VP: we love you, keep offering us good ports :) To CDPR and GOG: stop hiding behind excuses. If you don't plan to port games/tools on Linux, just say so. Being honest is the best way to build a respectful relationship. But as far i'm concerned, i'm done with CDPR/GOG. There are lots of respectful dev and stores who deserve my money much more.

The share of Linux users on Steam is still holding steady

The percentage of Linux users on Steam does not count at all. The only valid indicator is: does Feral, Aspyr, Firaxis, Virtual Programming,Techland and others manage to make profits from Linux? In addition, the percentage of linux users of these games may be higher than average simply because we have less AAA titles to choose from. The big porting wave might be over, but now we start seeing day 1 native support which is the only way for devs to properly mesure the Linux market share. How many of us already had Bioshock Infinite, Civilization 5, Borderlands 2, etc when the ports were made? Lots of "old" titles have been in many bundles, had huge discounts. But now, it would be very interesting to know the share of linux sales for titles with day-1 linux release.
PS: Who says 2K stoped considering Linux? Amoung their newest tiles there is Civ6 and XCOM2 that have been ported to Linux (i even think XCOM2 was a day-1).
