Star Citizen to use Vulkan instead of DirectX 12 and drop DirectX 11 eventually

I fully expect Star Citizen to be one of the most expensive bombs in video game history.

The 'Australian Summer' update for Civilization VI is now live on Linux

Update didn't do a thing for the performance. It's just as bad as before.

Aspyr Media have teased that the 'Australian Summer' Civilization VI update will be on Linux soon

I'm hoping for performance improvements. I would like to get more than 15 frames per second on a busy map on low settings. Civ 5 runs great on the same same system with everything maxed.

As for the game itself, I think it's perhaps the best Civ game to date, although the AI could use some help.

Quoting: Mountain ManMy method for dealing with the ninjas in the original is to plant laser mines around the level and then hide until they blow themselves up. This works surprisingly well.
One word; snarks. ;-)
Do you have snarks by that point in the hands game? I can't remember.

Quoting: SmilexWhy would anyone want to "fix" those awesome looking purple helmets?
Also did they remove the ninjas from the game? Those where the worst experience in the original.

Just say no to "crowdfunding" and "early access".

Quoting: rustybroomhandleSuch negativity. If I were a dev doing a Kickstarter reading all this, I'd probably just not bother trying to support Linux since it looks like Linux users are a bunch of cranky assholes that most likely won't support the Kickstarter to begin with.
Sure, they could be cynical and dismissive of our concerns. Or they could actually take our comments to heart and say to themselves, "You know, those guys have a point. Let's treat Linux like it's a lead platform instead of a low-priority item that won't get our attention until late in the development process."

Future Stardock games may come to Linux thanks to Vulkan

Quoting: stretch611I am not happy that Stardock has not supported linux at all yet. The company was started in niche markets.

Originally, Stardock catered to the OS/2 market. The original Galactic Civilizations was OS/2 only when it first came out before the company expanded to the windows world. I still remember Process Commander from Stardock which was a must have utility for OS/2 back in the day. (Honestly, it has been so long, I forget the details on what it did; but I did buy/have it :D )
To be fair, Brad Wardell didn't intend to cater to a niche market. OS/2 was supposed to be the operating system at the time, a partnership between IBM and Microsoft, two of the biggest names in the computer industry. That is until Microsoft screwed IBM, pulled out of the partnership, and then used anti-competitive practices to force OS/2 out of the market which resulted in Windows rising to dominance. So it wasn't that Wardell was trying to cater to a niche market, he just bet on the wrong horse.

Future Stardock games may come to Linux thanks to Vulkan

Quoting: femtomaticI played a lot of GalCiv2 when Windows was all I knew and would really love to have GalCiv3 under linux, but I'm not holding my breath.

Part of Stardock's business model is to sell customization softwares for the Windows desktop [External Link], I don't know how it compares to their game sales but I'm pretty sure it has increased significantly since Win8... So to be realistic, I doubt they would spend a significant amount of money and energy cater to linux users unless they see a potential for meaningful profits.

Or they could see us as potential customers for their other products "Look, we made Windows as customizable as KDE! All you have to do is pay us a fee to be able to modify a software that you already paid for..." God I'm glad I switched to linux!
From what I understand, Stardock's widgets for Windows make up the vast majority of their income. Game development is something Wardell treats almost as a hobby.

What have you been playing recently and what do you think about it?

Quoting: Mountain ManI need to figure out how to make those games work in Wine, because the Arkham games pretty much the only ones I really miss since making a clean break from Windows (that and, believe it or not, LEGO The Lord of the Rings). Last time I tried getting Arkham Asylum to work in Wine, it failed miserably. The game wouldn't even start.
Aside of the little workaround for the controller the game worked just out of the box for me (since wine-staging 2.0). Weird how inconsistent can Wine be.
Admittedly, it has been about a year since I last tried, and Wine has made some significant strides in that time, so maybe I should give it another try.
