Company Of Heroes 2 Launches For Linux On August 27th

Quoting: melkemindAsk and ye shall receive. Valve's Linux port of Left 4 Dead 2 significantly outperformed the Windows version. The key here, of course, is that it was not a third-party port. Companies like Feral aren't working with their own code. So, I don't know if it's an inherent problem with OpenGL or the drivers considering games that are day-one releases on Linux (like Victor Vran) seem to perform flawlessly. Perhaps it's more the inherent nature of porting.
To be fair, that Left 4 Dead 2 test is three-years old now and not really relevant any more since both OpenGL and DirectX have improved since then.

But good call on Victor Vran. It shows that games on Linux don't have to lag behind their Windows counterparts. X-Plane 10 is another case study which proves that OpenGL is no slouch on cross platform games. Of course then we have Day 1 Linux releases like Cities Skylines which lag significantly behind Windows for some inexplicable reason.

So who knows.

Blame AMD for their crap drivers.

Quoting: melkemindAs far as I know, lower Linux performance is to some degree inherent to the lower quality drivers (including the Nvidia binary ones) as well as to quirks of OpenGL itself. This all will hopefully be remedied by VULKAN but for now I feel like it's a tad unfair to blame game porters for Linux performance being somewhat worse (of course, significant performance drop or any instability shouldn't be excused).
It seems that reduced performance is an inherent part of the DirectX to OpenGL porting process. Games that start out as OpenGL seem to have equal performance across the board.

That said, every Feral port I own runs great for me, so I have no complaints.

No, that's completely wrong. Crowdfunding is investment, early access is paying for beta testing (which is weird).
I stand by my statement. They're scams because there is no way for the customer to hold the developer accountable, and too many developers have taken advantage of this fact. For instance, do you really think Larian Studios would be dragging their feet on the Linux version if their backers could hold their feet to the fire? Of course not, but they have your money, and what can you do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Anybody who backed this game because of the promise of a Linux version got conned. It's as simple as that.

Quoting: SabunIt looks like we do have to push them quite a bit for more information, but they are willing to respond. I asked for this confirmation of proof several hours ago [...] and Swen honored it with that Twitter post.
Considering that they've made and broken similar promises in the past, you'll understand if I don't suddenly believe them now, and I'm not going to believe any of their claims about the Linux version until I see the "buy" button in the Steam for Linux client.

But to be honest, at this point, I probably won't be buying their game even though I was interested in it at one time simply because it would feel like rewarding bad behavior.

Motörhead Through The Ages, An Expansion For The RPG Victor Vran Announced

An expansion already? I'll probably buy it because I think the base game is pretty awesome, and it runs flawlessly in Linux, but I'm a bit surprised to see an expansion announced not even a month after release.

Quoting: hummer010I have a real love / hate relationship with Paradox. I love the games, I love the Linux support.

I hate all the bloody DLC. I hate the fact that you can spend more on DLC than the base game cost.
I think Paradox is one of the few companies to do DLC right. The granular approach means that you can only buy what you want. Plus they give away so much content for free in their patches that I really don't see any reason to complain.
I think selling things like "make different types of units actually look different" and "appropriate background music" is insane. That's like selling the polish for your game separately.
What's wrong with that? Some people don't care about that stuff, so they can get a content update at a lower price, which is pretty awesome. If you want the eye- and ear-candy then you spend a little more. That's a win/win as far as I'm concerned. And thanks to Steam sales, you can usually get expansion packs for $5 and new unit skins and music packs for as little as $.49.
