GOL Asks: What have you been playing on Linux & SteamOS recently?
24 Nov 2015 at 9:06 am UTC

My recently played games are quite a mixed bag.

Cafe 0 A VN that can leave you really bummed out, as the true ending is really dark.

Hatoful Boyfriend Part of me is upset that it's just a gag game, since a lot of the scenarios it covers would make for legitimately interesting stories. The other part of me keeps laughing at all the intentional absurdity of it all.

Gone Home I really didn't like this game, despite the fact that as far as walking sims go, it does some things right, in terms of letting you "fill in the blanks" in the story in an intiguing way. It just reads like it's shoving an agenda down your throat, and in a trite, yawn-inducing, and somewhat pretentious manner at that. Without spoiling anything, much of the details we learn of the characters and their interactions were so predictable, and as a Catholic myself, I didn't appreciate much of the implied rhetoric. I tried going in with an open mind despite all the probably largely unjustified hate the game received, but I just couldn't like it.

Don't Be Patchman! This game is much more fun than it may look! There's only five levels right now, but gosh, I'd still recommend this to anyone here, if you haven't gotten it already. I'm not even sure how to describe it, other than maybe "cute/funny third person action with some stealth and strategy." It's haaaaard sometimes, but was fun figuring out how to beat each level and I'm really looking forward to the full game.

Without Within 2 Wonderful, cute little VN by dev InvertMouse. Highly recommend anything by him if indie VNs, especially short-and-sweet ones, are your thing.

Anna's Quest Finally got around to finishing this. This is tied with SOMA as my game of they year. I can't even explain why, really. I just loved it so much. I even gifted it to other people including my little cousins to spread the love around. I hope we see more of Anna and her friends and the other weird and silly characters in the future.

Grow Home This cute little game is great for laying back and relaxing.

Alien Isolation Haven't really gotten into it yet, but I'm just as stoked as anyone. I'll totally do a stream in your place, Liam.

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale via WINE, does that count? Oh man. This game treats depression because it's cuteness incarnate, though I haven't played enough to comment on how grindy some reviews say it gets. Just wish the budget hadn't been so low so it could have been fully voiced instead of just a few recorded lines repeated often.

Leak: AMD's new driver will apparently offer much better performance on Linux

Though I use an NVIDIA card on my desktop, I'll have an AMD card in my new laptop when it comes back from an RMA, so I love hearing every bit of news like this.

Gabe Newell Simulator Looks Like It's Adding Linux Support, Oh My

So, the greatest game ever is coming to Linux?

Oddly enough, given all the joke reviews on other games, all the ones I saw for this one are accurately negative.

GOL GOTY Awards Coming Up, What Do You Want To See?
17 Nov 2015 at 6:08 pm UTC

I'd like it to be based on genre but I'd understand if that was too unruly. We have so many Linux games now that asking for your favorite is like asking for your favorite movie-- different ones offer radically different experiences. My favorite horror title of the year was quite different from my favorite adventure, visual novel, text game, platformer, fps, or strategy title, but they were all great in their own way.

But would it be possible to ALSO have the more general stuff like best graphics or story, and an overall Linux GOTY? Don't wanna give you a whole bunch of extra work Liam, but it'd be cool to cover all of it if we could. Maybe you could do it in two parts, like, "This week, best in genre, next week, best in category/achievement/overall."

I may be getting overly complicated here.

Ars Technica Benchmarks Show Windows 10 Beating SteamOS Performance

Quoting: Nyamiou
Quoting: subI'm really puzzled about Valve's PR department when it comes to the SteamOS.
I'd say they're doing a terrible job. Am I missing anything?
True, the Valve marketing of SteamOS and Steam Machines is terrible, they are simply doing nothing and hoping for the best. Hopefully, Alienware is really marketing it, and they do believe in SteamOS
I'll also add that I'm really disappointed in Valve's marketing, or complete lack thereof, of SteamOS. Over in /r/linux_gaming the meme going around is that "Valve is playing the long game, just like the launch of Steam itself, there's nothing to worry about guys!" The launch of Steam and SteamOS are two totally different situations, so I do wonder how well this strategy is going to work out. It really seems like Valve doesn't care if SteamOS totally flops because they're still rolling in dough either way.

Tactical FPS 'Insurgency' Now Available on Linux In Beta Form, Woohoo
22 Oct 2015 at 12:47 pm UTC

I'm actually the opposite-- I don't like "realistic" or "tactical" shooters at all, so I'm guessing this wouldn't be right for me. I would rather play intense twitch shooters where you're a bullet sponge unless you get snipe headshots or dead-on shotgun or rocket launcher hits. I hate dying from one bullet, health that doesn't recover, and similar stupid crap. I've never found any kind of replacement for Gears of War on Linux. I wait patiently for such a thing to exist.

I will say that it's great that we're getting more shooters at all, though.

Really awesome bundle, even paid enough for all the figures on impulse, which my wallet might regret but my shelf won't.

Sales Statistics From Super Win the Game, All Platforms Did Badly
29 Sep 2015 at 3:42 pm UTC Likes: 1

Huh, that's weird, I would have thought this game sold pretty well across all platforms, actually. I guess that's what I get for assuming that just because I bought it and liked it that everyone else did.

As for the game itself, apart from being brutally hard in some spots it's really not a bad game at all.

Yes, finally! There's been so many cool things coming out lately, I can't even really justify getting this right now, but still an instabuy anyway.
