Quoting: NezchanWell...thanks for semi-ruining it for me, I guess? Given I haven't yet reached the end.
Sorry! Maybe you will like the ending more than I did?

Mable & The Wood is a fairly unusual Metroidvania out now with Linux support

Update:

Tried my trusty old PS2 controller (kept for platformers), but it was not even recognized, despite Steam trying to be the middleman. Resorted to configuring the steam controller to mimic WASD+mouse. I can't play long periods of KB&M due to an old shoulder injury. Steam Controller is my friend!

So, the controls are OK but not brilliant. Still trying to find my way around in the game - a lot of the areas feel a bit empty.

Quoting: ziabiceI played a lot of Sundered this week and I only have to do the last boss battle. I have mixed feeling about this game, is a bit repetitive.
Interesting. I loved that game and played through a couple times to get the different endings and achievements. I can see the style not being everyone's taste, though.

Quoting: NezchanSecrets of Rætikon [External Link], a Metroidvania-ish game where you play a bird attempting to activate an ancient machine. Good controls, stunning visuals, and satisfying puzzles, even if fighting to get needed puzzle objects away from magpies gets frustrating at times.

It was the first game I ever backed in Early Access, and I figured I'd pick it up again and try to actually finish it.
Sadly, the ending of this game is terrible. I think they ran out of money and it really shows. Too bad as the general concept was cool.

Got to the spider queen and found I can't select forms on the right pad of the Steam Controller, no matter how I try to configure it. [Edit - I see Liam was hit by something similar] I will try a different controller later...

Very preliminary impressions: I like the visual style and the humour is almost Guybrush Threepwood. It does throw you out into the world without much direction (old school) and I got lost/stuck at one point and started over. Getting into the groove, now, and enjoying the unusual mechanics.

It has a souls-like thing where you lose your gems if you die and respawn. You can reclaim them again at your death point.

Thanks for the review! I rarely buy games on release, but your comments made the difference.

I will report back with my thoughts :-)

Steam Play arrived on Linux one year ago, some thoughts

Stadia is "linux" about as much as Android is "linux" - really only just enough for Google to lock it down and make it so other people can't make much use of its freedoms.

Also, to shamelessly steal someone's joke on ArsTechnica:

There’s only two scenarios that I can think of with Stadia:

1. It’s wildly unpopular and Google cans the service within a couple years.
2. It’s wildly popular and Google cans the service within a couple years.

As for the progress on Steam Play, it’s amazed me at times. Many games really are just click and play!
You have that right. It has surpassed all my expectations.

I mostly use it to play Windows games that were already in my library, but even that is going to keep me busy for years. Unless something is pretty special, I will be reserving my money for native Linux games (or occasionally, older games that I know will never be ported).

Mixing Tower Defense with production chains, the free and open source game Mindustry has a big update

Quoting: syntonym
Quoting: no_information_hereLooks amazing for a free game.

A few days ago, the developer released the final 4.0 build which is an absolutely massive update to Mindustry.
I haven't followed this game at all. Does that mean it is in (more-or-less) finished form? Or, will they be still changing the main game mechanics around?
There is a public trello board [External Link] which has some features for a v5 (called a polishing update) and a v6 (called "More content") so I think it should still be developed further.
Thanks - that helps to know!
