The Talos Principle has a new beta with an upgraded Serious Engine, removes OpenGL in favour of Vulkan

Quoting: EikeCroteam has a way of working that surprises me again and again. Wonder how they can afford touching old games (even if it's mostly engine changes). Happy they can, of course.

And... do play Talos Principle if you're into puzzling.
It seems they use their old games as a test-bed for developing their new engine. I am impressed at how well they pull it off, and we get "seriously" updated games like Talos!

Now, as much as I like SS, I really wish they would do some kind of Talos 2.

A reminder about Steam's platform-specific wishlist feature you should be using

Since it's a manual process (and only works if you tick one platform), if you don't go and do it yourself your wishlist entries on Steam don't show up as being for Linux.
Hmm. Make a hidden setting and need it to be manually changed, then base the success of Linux visibility (for devs) on this setting. Sounds like a brilliant plan. What could go wrong?

Liam, I appreciate your valiant effort to notify people, but this is doomed from the start.

Hell is Other Demons looks like a mental bullet-hell platformer coming to Linux (updated: not at launch)

I like the chunky soundtrack and the colour pallete is kinda cool. However, I could barely tell who was what in that video, which makes me worried about gameplay...

Baba Is You, an award winning puzzle game is heading to Linux next month

That does look clever. I am always wary of things written for a "game jam" as I am skeptical that something can be written quickly and well. My impression is that game jam games are mostly written for other game jam devs to play. Maybe I am wrong!

It looks like they have polished their game. I am always up for something with a really new idea.

With a clear inspiration from Portal, the first-person puzzler HA/CK is out now

Ah, sorry my sarcasm didn't come over well. I guess my (poorly voiced) objection was the article seemed to be written for someone who had never heard of other first-person puzzle games and this was the very first ever homage to portal. Liam, I know you know better than that, it was just the way it came across to me.

Quoting: NanobangSo, voilà this is an FPP portal-like! :)
Haha

the heavy Portal inspiration is crystal clear
You do know that there is a very large genre now called "first-person puzzle" games? Yes, they were largely inspired by Portal at the beginning, but we don't always refer to Castlevania when reviewing metroidvania games these days...

Antichamber
QUBE
Kairo
Talos
Parallax
Deadcore
TRI
NaissanceE
Qbeh-1
etc...

Quoting: g000h- I don't like to uninstall a game until I've completed it, and now I'm racking up about 40 installed games and practically zero completions.
- A lot of the time, I'm keen to have relatively casual entertainment when gaming, and find that often games are set up to be frustratingly difficult.
- Going somewhat in hand with the previous grievance, I'm irritated by games requiring excessive numbers of controls. Quite often I'm having keyboard fumbles and not able to change weapon or swap mode or whatever. It's not so bad if the game is slow, but if it is a twitch-shooter like Serious Sam, where you need to make key presses as fast as possible, well - Not happy.
- If I leave a game for a while, then I forget the story, where I've got to, and get disinclined to go back into it again. That accounts for about 30 of my 40 installed titles.
This all sounds very familiar! I can't speak for others, but I think getting older makes me less tolerant of frustrating games. Also, I am spoiled for choice so it is very easy just to move on to something else. In the "old days" I would never leave a game unfinished. Fight to the bitter end, even if I wasn't really enjoying it...

Forgetting storylines just means I have to play only 1 or 2 games at at time, until completion (or abandonment). I also have to wait for a solid stretch of time when I can actually play so that my memory doesn't get interrupted.

Just finished Ori and Blind Forest under Proton. My mini-review:

- Artwork and animation are excellent.

- World layout and metroidvania bits are well-designed.

- Platforming, combat, and general gameplay are fairly solid. Main character can sometimes feel a bit floaty but I got used to it.

- Story starts off with big emotion but then gets kinda flat and hard to understand. The bits with Naru are generally good, but the rest of it didn't grab me.

- Instead of boss battles, it has mega escape sequences. I hated these with a cold bright passion. It departed from the pace and style of the rest of the game and seemed like a bunch of cheap deaths. Normally, I feel excited and proud after defeating a boss, not so much here.

- The ending didn't get me too excited by the time it happened. At the end, I would say I (mostly) enjoyed it and don't regret buying it, but it didn't make me walk away thinking "Wow, I need to tell other people to play this game!"

YMMV

Team Cherry has announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, coming to Linux

Oh man. Hollow Knight has to be one of my favourite games of all time (I have been playing games for decades and have a Steam library over 600). I have to admit to getting misty-eyed watching that trailer! This will be one of rare times I will buy a game full price on day 1.

Go Team Cherry!

Pikuniku is an absolute surprise, what a joy to play and it's out now with Linux support

Looks great! For 3 hours of gameplay I may wait for a bit of a sale...

Too many games in the backlog at the moment. I am starting to feel gluttonous.
