I would love to see separate "AAA" and "non-AAA" categories for best game. Games like Deus Ex, Mad Max and Xcom will be hard for smaller devs to muscle out just from sheer voting numbers...
I know it is a little hard deciding where to draw the line between them, though.

Lots of great games this year. What a time to be a linux gamer!
Looking at total hours, my number one goes to Salt and Sanctuary. "SoulsVania" doesn't really do it justice but hey, why not?
Honourable mention: Hyperlight Drifter.
If it had been released in 2016, I could have voted for the Talos Principle. I did only play it this year :-)

I played the Last Tinker and quite enjoyed it. It has a few rough edges and the frame rate can occasionally dip. However, it is a pretty well crafted game for a 3D platformer from a fresh developer. Very happy to have picked it up in a sale. It also worked well with the Steam Controller after a bit of setup.
I am sure it is VERY different than Shadow Tactics, though...

I played this quite recently. I agree with Liam that it is one of the best tower defence games we have. The screenshots don't really do it justice but, for tower defence games, they rarely do.
(I do have a strange liking for OTTTD, as well.)

Looks cool, I like games with a different perspective. Indigenous stories are great that way.
From following the link, I think it got the Steam greenlight.

An Ethan Lee port is an awesome port!
I just finished Salt & Sanctuary. What an absolutely amazing game. Props to the (two!) devs and to Ethan for a flawless port...

Sad that it didn't happen, but I have to appreciate the honest comments by the dev. They have to make hard decisions and I respect that. Maybe someday it will come to us.

Quoting: inlinuxdude1) I'd like to thank the dev for supporting Linux and also for his thoughtful post here on GoL..I agree. I really appreciate the interesting development comments. I don't play roguelikes, but I always admire people who put the work in to multiplatform games.
Quoting: inlinuxdude2) Is there a way to ignore people like Leopard in the comment sections. His comments really make me sick.. They are singularly unhelpful in attaining our end goals of game parity with other platforms, as well as unappreciative and ungrateful.. :(I support this. Sadly, a user "ignore" feature wasn't something I worried about until today.

I seem to be one of those rare people that don't like rogue-like games, so I was sad when Kyle Pittman announced Gunmetal Arcadia would go "rogue". However, another adventure platformer has me excited!
I loved his other two games. He has an uncanny ability to capture the retro feel while still being an awesome game with modern sensibilities.
Voted on Greenlight.
