Twitter agrees to Elon Musk buyout, a reminder we're on Mastodon

Quoting: TheodisOr are you so obtuse as to not find these types of slurs and malicious remarks as not being hate speech?
There's a very wide umbrella for that. You don't have to engage with assholes, block them. Part of the problem is whoever that is at the top will decide what is acceptable or not, but there's no way of making everyone happy. Individual responsibility is preferable, because any platform that prefers a top-down method of policy enforcement will always come down on things harder, and likely have more false positives.

If you chase away the "bad speech", it's probably going somewhere else, where you can't see it, but that doesn't get called out on by others and perhaps worsening in intensity. It makes a person dig in their heels on their beliefs, potentially radicalizing them at the worst, when they're banned. If anything, those are the factors that determine overall social acceptability of public speech, losing the ability to see or even call out what you find offensive means this method of in-person social regulation of speech has disappeared, ergo the echo chambers.

In order to prevent this, it's necessary to see things we don't like, even briefly before we block that person. We should know they exist so we can avoid those people if we individually choose.

Quoting: WMan22I'm not asking for the support or condemnation of any ideology. I can do that elsewhere whenever I want to. I'm asking for a place that gives me a break, for the sake of the projects I enjoy, and my mental health.
This is the main reason I don't participate in social media often, save in anonymous conversations or with people who I actually know offline. It's gotten to the point that we're gaming for "points" instead of wanting real conversations, looking for "gotchas" and reasons to NOT listen, instead of reasons to engage and really further our ideas through other people, even if we find them or their ideas repugnant.

Social media are mainly platforms for propaganda, of any stripe, and it didn't used to be so. The personal should not have become political, because then there is no escape, no fun, no goodwill, no jokes, no honest mistakes, no forgiveness, no meeting of minds as one human to another, both of whom are and always will be fallible; and it's incredibly sad.

Cooler Master are doing a slick Kickstarter-exclusive Raspberry Pi 4 case

Glad you're realizing the Pi4 is really a jump from RPF's last offerings. I've been playing Naev and Transport Tycoon Deluxe, as well as finishing a playthrough of Out Of Order. (All games in Raspbian's repositories.)

My Pi4 can run 720p streams with only a little coaxing in config.txt. Haven't tried installing 0 A.D. on it yet, but unless I get the new 8 Gig RAM version, kind of worry if it'll eat the Pi for breakfast with only a 4Gig model.

Eheh. Funny you mention Into the Breach, because I was playing FTL: Advanced Edition from my old GOG directory this morning. This game is still hard on Easy, I need to brush up on how to win.

Also recently 100% CGed Coming Out on Top, a very funny and surprisingly witty (and very adult) Visual Novel about a young (American) college senior who's just come out to his friends. It's English-speaker made, so there's no awkward dialogue, except where you'd expect it in a sitcom.

Still trying to wrap my brain around Cultist Simulator. I used to remember how to play to progress a little bit, but the logic and/or opportunities for progression are just too scarce without earning more money. Only established a cult twice, IIRC... I suck.

Also trying to finish the last Mission level of Startopia, which works perfectly with Proton 5.0. Hope I won't crash my machine doing it, though... it's potentially a very resource-heavy game despite being so old, if the entire space station is filled with buildings, animations and special effects, all rendering even out of view to a degree in your enemy's sections.

Hope everyone else is doing as well as they can, considering. :)

A newly public patent (filed in 2018) from Valve shows a Steam Controller with attachments

Quoting: dubigrasuIf you remove these unique features and put back the analogue sticks, what do you get? Something like an Xbox or PS gamepads or Logitech or whatever? What's the point, we have those already.
Yeah, why make a copy? The dual trackpads method of doing FPS's is excellent, with the gyro switched on for extra-precision aiming. Reduces RSI, too.

Lucky thing that even with heavy use, our four Steam Controllers are still great, except for the D-stick's plastic coating grip dots wearing away over time. Fingers crossed they stay that way, we'd love to try a new Steam Controller out, because the first batch was/is incredible.

All I need for a new release of Steam Controllers is better availability/shipping in Canada, whether from the Steam client or not. After the first 3-6 months post-release, even EB Games and other indie video game stores had so little stock and there was no online purchasing options otherwise. In order to get the next two Steam Controllers it was necessary to send friends who were already going to the U.S. to buy some for us. :(

Quoting: grigiBlack Mesa — I've been waiting for it to be out of Beta, and now it is! And wow, you can really feel the love they put into it.

Unfortunately due to being in lock-down, the mini-mes keep me too busy to put more than a few hours a week gaming...
Oh right! Partner's been going through Black Mesa, it's fucking incredible! But... in the Lambda Core area the FPS drops massively and it's unplayable after that point, even after trying all the workarounds suggested in the Steam Discussions, so we had to stop.

Hope Crowbar Collective can get a patch together soon so we can keep going... T_T

Quoting: F.UltraThe Blackwell games are all awesome, never got any of the achievements to unlock in the Linux version unfortunately.
Neither did I, but they're in-game too, so it'll have to do...

Been watching my partner play Celeste. Can't believe he beat the PICO-8 version his first try! So proud! ^-^

* Stardew Valley (I always need more automation)
* completed Blackwell Convergence (pretty cool, need to replay a bit for achievements)
* started Halcyon 6: Lightspeed Edition (but might restart because I didn't listen to the tutorial like a dumbass)
* resumed Cultist Simulator (how the fuck do I play this thing??--on second thought, don't tell me)
* started Dream Daddy: Dadrector's Cut because I'm currently sick as a dog and badly needed some Dad-humour laughs

Oh, right... also language drilling with Slime Forest Adventure. It's an old game that fools me into learning Japanese kanji and word readings in the form of a simplified classic RPG. More about it here [External Link] if language learning piques your interest.

Been playing a combination of Stardew Valley, Euro Truck Simulator 2 and Everspace. That combination of games sounded less weird in my head... Also trying to finish the Act 1 demo of Missing Stars on the old lappy when I get in the mood/time.

Totally loving how you're rewarded more for exploration in Everspace, I'm not happy unless I can see every interesting-looking pixel in a 3D game. Takes a while to adapt to the controls, but runs perfectly with Steam Controller, using a slightly modified layout to switch the stick and Left D-pad controls, it's better for RSI purposes.

Should also take the time to play Talos Principle and Portal 2 again for the Co-op because neither of them would have worked until we got a proper AMD graphics card.

Valve making steps to address toxic behaviour on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Quoting: Doc Angelo
Quoting: KimyrielleThe toxic masculinity (and that's what we're talking about here in the end) that has more or less defined gaming culture since its inception needs to be finally removed from it.
People are people. Some are assholes, some are nice. Some of them are male, some of them are female. Who cares? It's the behavior we're talking about, not the gender.

It would be awesome if you could believe me that what I say comes from a place where I hope that people can be nice to each other, no matter what their gender, their skin color, their religion is or whatever you could use to divide human beings into groups.
Can't say it better than that. :)
